soo, forgive me, havent gotten far enough in a game to actually see if they added effects to the higher tiers of the existing buildings but

lord, the AI almost never builds a hospital, that makes things nasty enough, but as a merchant-republic, not only do the patricians not get court physicians, but they get no upgrades (and therefore no defence) against disease of their own

so far, ive tried playing 15 games as venice, 8 of which my dynasty of myself and 9 kids (starting in 769) were all dead of disease by the 793 viking event, couldnt even pump out more kids due to all the stacking fertility debuffs, and 5 of my wives dying immediately after their kid was born from pneumonia

just seems like, as rich as patricians are comapratively, they should be allowed to have a court physician, or at least some sort of House upgrade structure to help defend against disease?

Non-doge patricians can appoint court physicians, they just don't get the special decision to look for one if they don't have any candidates in their court. That was an oversight, and Paradox will fix it.

Secondly, hospitals do not protect characters. They protect provinces from epidemics. If your court is located in a province with a hospital (non-doge patricians are located in the republic capital unless they have other land of their own) then you have the same epidemic protection as the doge and his court.

Thirdly, obviously there's something wrong with the AI regarding its aversion to hospitals, and I imagine Paradox will fix it before too long.

you sure? ive done everything up to and including bringing renowned court physicians from other courts to mine, or making a physician the court phsyician when i AM doge, and once i lose doge-hood, the physicians lose their "court physician" title and i cannot give it back to them, it forever says thre are no viable candidates, despite the 7 viable courtiers i had as a doge who are still in my court when my kid inherited

and yeah i know hospitals prevent it from entering the county, was just thinking maybe an upgrade to reduce the chance of it popping up in your court

i mean, i dont get an option to close my own gates, only the Doge can choose to do that, and then it closes my gates once he has, and he rarely does it, and so far, ive had dozens of games as feudals where my county can sit in a small pox or camp fever epidemic for YEARS and only a few people will die, but EVERY time one pops up in a republic county half my court and literally all of my dynasty are dead within 6 months

so there is something up with republics and diseases, because iqta, tribal, nomad, feudal, none of them get absolutely as destroyed by disease as republics do consistently

(hell the one game i had that survived to the second generation, the other 4 houses of the republic in those 10 years were killed off and replaced at least a dozen times, it was absolutely horrid)

I've been playing as the Duke of Lombardy for the past 40 years from a 1077 start and have had ZERO issues with disease. I built a hospital early in my capital and made sure to keep a Court Physician handy at all times, so I'm not sure if that helped. The funny thing was that the Black Plague triggered early in around 1109 and hit Italy and Western Europe around the middle of 1111, bypassing my entire duchy entirely !

Ten years later and all of Europe and North Africa are dragging themselves off of the dirt and I'm chuffing along with +12 gold a month income, more than the Holy Roman emperor !

I did lose quite a lot of relatives to the Plague as well as to other diseases and my starting Duke and his wife died of smallpox, but I managed to survive the Black Death playing an 18 year old Duke with no siblings, just two cousins and a 12 year old betrothed (which I quickly dumped for an adult ASAP). It was really looking like I was going to get game over for a while there, especially after my cousins died (the last dynastic member after me was my poxy uncle), but as I said the Plague passed us all by and my wife has dutifully turned out three happy healthy kids including one strong but ugly son.

England lost two kings to the Plague and our dear Emperor lost two wives to it as well, the Pope survived (and apparently continues to survive) by eating his courtiers - I'm more than happy with that as I have never had my bishops like me more than the Pope as much as I have in this game !

All in all I am LOVING this DLC !

you sure?
Yes. On all counts.

You can't close your gates because you don't have any holdings. Conquer some. That will move your court while you're not doge, though, so you'll need to build your own hospital at that point.
