In middle age there were another social class belowe nobles named Gentry, woulnt be bad to have one in game using parician family palace system.

1) Every province should have estates plots depending on province holding slots
2) Every estate should have name, so if you give estate to lowborn people he/she should named as "Name of estate name"
3) Estates should have same succesion laws as liege who gave them out exept gavelkind
4) Estates should be upgradable
5) estate should have stewardship posision and when household guard is certain level can also apoint captain of houshold.
6) When household is died of liege gets household for himself, if hes not appoint steward household will not give any benefits couse its not managed, but liege can sell it and gift out to loyal subjects.
7) liege can also keep and manage his own estate and have extra trading options depending on its rank, upgraded buildings should pass on if he gifts it out.
8) if estate holder is traitor he/she can hide him/herself in estate and use houshold guards to defend it if liege will siege it it has change to destroy some buildings.

That would be a good way to simulate how the Carolinglian Empire and other non-feudal states worked - it was all administered by nobles (Comes) and clergy (Diocese Bishops, I think), no feudal inheritance. More like how Imperial Administration works than Feudal.

I'm thinking it would work as something akin to Republic play, but the big objective here is to either play the dynastic/intrigue game to end up on top of the Empire as either king or Majordomo (aka pretty much a regent, but you just run things outright), or be a pal to the kings until they give you the rights to inherit lands you own.

Alternatively, the Carolinglian Empire falls apart and you get to keep owning the land you had already and make it propriety of your family as the King's reach and power weakened, which is what happened in history. Maybe even strike out on your own as an independent duke or king.

At the start of Charlie start, with the exception of some roman forts, there should be no Castles. Rather, nobles ruling under the King/Emperor's stead should rule from fortified cities. Castle holdings should be built.
