I'm no expert in roman things (well...i know that there were legions and such things ;) ), but i think in this time period there was no ruler like the Cesares. So what Person are we Playing? In CK it was a count, king .... . Am i right that there was something like a chancelor voted by the senate?
So if we playing this "chancelor", what if we loose such a vote? can we play as a little governor or ... ? I mean its about Dynastys and it would be some kind of unrealistic if my family would be ruler of the senate for the whole game.
I hope you get my point ;)

From what I've seen, I believe we play the government, like in EU... however we have numerous dynasties within our government that form alternative sources of power and occasional rebellions/civil wars to try and replace your government.

The word you are looking for is consul. In reality there was 2 of them but i think they have only 1 in the game (?). Its a valid question about who you play though. But as far as i understand it the game apparently is not about dynasties, that is you dont play a single dynasty like in CK but the whole nation (faction) like in EU. The objective being to get the best out of a lot of contesting families within that nation without making some of them so miserable that they will start a civil war.

you were disappointed with EU3?!? I can't stop playing it. The only thing is I don't know where you are coming from as I don't own CK.

I guess I am missing out. :D

The character system is really quite good. Though it does tend to be the whole game in CK, thereby lacking a bit in the empire building department. It does sound like Rome will have combined the two to what seems to be utmost perfection.

How many corporals do you think that their are in a 1,000 men unit (which is the standard unit-size in Rome). Lets say that there are 20 of them. Then imagine that your built ten of those cohorts, then you have 200 corporals. Now imagine that all 50 countries in the game built a army of 10,000 men that is 50 x 200 = 5,000 characters, then imagine that above a corporal you would have sergeants, luitenants, captains, majors, colonels, generals and 'field marshals' (all ranks of course that won't be in the game since they aren't Roman ranks or titles, but that that is not important).

That would be 10 to 50 thousand characters, just in your armies. And you then want to 'manually' promote them when you feel like they deserve it ?

That is just impossible, even when you let the AI do the promoting.

Why stop there? I want every person in Europe simulated. I want to adopt a homeless orphan living in the streets of Rome and guide his way towards becoming first a general, then Emperor! ;)

I'm not quite into the whole playing the government thing through different people. I'd much rather play a family and try to keep charge, but I suppose that would be harder? Although I suppose for most countries that don't have a Republican flair like Rome you pretty much will be playing a family..so maybe i've just woken up an am not thinking clearly.

Yeah, you run into the problem of a large number of different government types. In CK, you couldn't play a republic because dynastic continuity wasn't maintainable. Cutting out the oligarchies and republics in the Roman time period wouldn't be as easy or good.

Yeah, you seem to have missed my point. I wasn't asking for SimRome, just the ability to promote important leaders (ie, those who are actual characters in-game, such as Caesar & Hannibal, etc.) as and when they've earned it.

I don't see how this is such a rediculous idea, particularly given all this talk of a Crusader Kings-esque character/role-playing system. Still, feel free to stone me to death for this single, stupid suggestion.

But EU3 has the whole world as its setting, while CK and Rome only have a small portion. It could possibly be done, but the computer power and the amount of historical research it would require is massive.

Hmm... What was the maximum number of independent "courts" in CK? Something like 800 if every province was free... What's the max number of tags in EUIII?

Though to be honest, Great People of the Court + generals/admirals and random kings means plenty of RPG material already IMO.

They already made a game like that, you started out in Pompey and had a few hours to escape before it blew up... then you worked your way up and eventually became emperor (I think?). An old classic. Can't remember the name though.

Actually, I've decided that if I ever make a PC game, it will be an MMORPG with this feature. It will be played in a city setting, with realistic distances and passages of time. EVERY single person in the city can be interacted with, and EVERY single person in the city will have routines, behavior schematics, personality, backgrounds, etc.

The main purpose of such a game is to be able to do anything in it, including rape NPCs, or make useless items out of garbage to sell to interested people for decorations.

...Maybe we dont have the technology for it yet. Ah well.
