I was wondering, what are the RPG elements in Rome such as are in Crusader Kings? I was one of the few who started playing EUIII before I played CK and when I ran across CK on a whim one day, and began playing it, I was utterly spoiled by the many RPG elements which seem to be sorely lacking from EUIII: honestly, I realized how much more fun CK was. I really hope that Rome is more like CK and less like EUIII.

The pseudo-RPG elements of CK, including the ability to build upon a dynasty with claims and titles - was probably the best thing I have encountered in a strategy game, and made playing the game so satisfying. I think if Rome was CK remixed I would die happily.

Rome is like a cross between CK/EU3...I think/hope.

They said you'll have standing armies, but you'll also have generals in charge of them who might start a civil war.

So if you try to dismiss or disband an army who is more loyal to the rebellious general then they might turn on you

Actually to be exact they said that if you disband an army they expect to be paid because back then armies were paid by loot they got from battle... If you send them home early they expect to be compensated.

If you send them home with a pat on the pack and no gold in hand they get kind of cranky.

I'd quite like to see Standing armies AND Levies, to simulate both sides, which were used by many countries in this period..

Well we know that there are characters and they marry and have children, and even have their personal histories recorded. And as mentioned in another thread the AI characters can behave very much on their own raising their own armies and joining the side of their choice in case of civil war. And there the important loyalty score for the characters, plus theres even more roles to assign characters to than in CK (generals, governors possibly more).

Yet the trade system seems more advanced that EUIII plus it does have standing armies, so its pretty much a fact that it is almost everything CK was and then all the good things from EUIII added and then some modifications and expansions that both games needed (like improved graphics on the map and units plus the enhanced civil war and then of course the trade) thrown on top.

All in all, its gonna be a great game :D :cool:

What we're really going to need is a mod so we can play as individual FAMILIES...so we can have a multiplayer game with 10 people all in Rome...someday.

Well, first you mod it for the peak of the Roman empire. Then you each get a family...and...one of you has to hold the Empire for like 10 years.

Diplomats and researchers as well. Sending missives to foreign nations is kind of a thinker now. Which character will you not mind seeing back without a head?

I want game NOW. Also as to the guy who edited his post a few up, the more disloyal the general the more expensive it will be to pay off his troops too.

But EU3 has the whole world as its setting, while CK and Rome only have a small portion. It could possibly be done, but the computer power and the amount of historical research it would require is massive.

Standing armies were actually quite rare (If they even existed) up until the Marius reforms in Rome, when Rome began using one. Before then, all armies were levies, since they were levied from the citizenry in the event of a war.

I'd like it if you could promote your generals. I'd like to be able to start off with a hungry young corporal and be able to promote him up through the ranks as and when I felt he deserved it (or, HoI-style, let the AI do it automatically); perhaps eventually having one or two incredibly gifted commanders as field marshals.

How many corporals do you think that their are in a 1,000 men unit (which is the standard unit-size in Rome). Lets say that there are 20 of them. Then imagine that your built ten of those cohorts, then you have 200 corporals. Now imagine that all 50 countries in the game built a army of 10,000 men that is 50 x 200 = 5,000 characters, then imagine that above a corporal you would have sergeants, luitenants, captains, majors, colonels, generals and 'field marshals' (all ranks of course that won't be in the game since they aren't Roman ranks or titles, but that that is not important).

That would be 10 to 50 thousand characters, just in your armies. And you then want to 'manually' promote them when you feel like they deserve it ?

That is just impossible, even when you let the AI do the promoting.
