After over 100 game years of glitch free play my game wouldn't save.

I'm playing vanila 2.1.6, I'm running 32bit XP, I have 4gb RAM.

I tried this work around.

"For Windows XP users: You need to edit the Boot.ini to increase the system's RAM access.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit.
Add space /3GB to end of last line of boot.ini file
Click on File>Save>Exit"

And now I get "Failed to create a graphics device" when starting the game.

Try to have it look like this at the end

.../3GB /Userva=2900

Based on: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316739/
Said to work for XP professional as well.

So that your line could look like this (only an example, yours might be different,; don't change the original in your boot.ini, only add to it):
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /3GB /Userva=2900

Tried it, still getting "Failed to create graphics device."

Hmm..maybe the official tech support has an idea or suggestions then.

I can only think of undoing that whole 3GB thing and starting without DLC you don't need or try the No India mod (see 'Old Version' for 2.1.6).
Switching off trees in settings.txt also used to help as far as i remember.

Does anyone read these threads?

Yes. Most of the time it's AndrewT for this subforum, tough others occasionly drop in too (they usually do tech support for several games at once).
Devs might look once in a while as well.

edit:
AndrewT though is australian and more likely to respond at european night time.
You could upload or copy and paste your dxdiag report in here.

Do you still get the "Failed to create.." when you undid the 3GB switch ?

I don't get the "failed to create graphics device" when I don't enable the workaround outlined in the original post but then without the workaround I'm destined to be unable to save when I get some way into the game.

So as before. Okay.
I can only recommend to, as i said, upload or copy and paste the dxdiag report in here. That could make things easier.

Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. Zip up your whole Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory and attach or link that here too please.

And can I see your boot.ini please

You don't appear to have implemented the change we suggested at all? Let's do it as an extra line, like this, so you can choose which mode you want at boot time:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /3GB /Userva=2560

First off, I've created a bit of confusion here. I had implemented the change suggested but had rolled it back when it didn't work.

I tried the above but I'm still getting "failed to create graphics device"

I'll post the new dxdiag.txt here because I'm unsure whether or not my driver has been updated. Seems to me the name and version have stayed the same but the date has changed, but then I'm not clued up on such things.
I'll also post the boot.ini so you can see I've made the change.

I tried the above but I'm still getting "failed to create graphics device"
I've had dozens of people make that change, and this is the first time that's happened. No real idea why, sorry. Maybe try 2280 .

I'll post the new dxdiag.txt here because I'm unsure whether or not my driver has been updated. Seems to me the name and version have stayed the same but the date has changed, but then I'm not clued up on such things.
Naturally the file name is the same. But the version has definitely updated ... ?

Driver Version: 6.14.0010.7246
vs
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.7267

Yes. That will give you full access to all 4gb of installed memory, and remove the limit of 2gb per app that 32bit Windows sets.

That said, I'm puzzled why the workaround that helps everyone else is causing you such problems.
