Failed to create graphics device.

Hello,

I recently purchased and installed the Legacy of Rome DLC for Crusader Kings II. After launching the game, an error message came up saying "Failed to create graphics device. Exiting." The launcher would then open as if the error message hadn't appeared, but any mods and other DLC I have didn't appear in the launcher. After clicking the "Start CKII" icon, the same message would appear and close the program. I tried re-installing the game a few times (including deleting the Paradox Interactive folder) and tried a "verify the integrity of the game cache" to see if there were any missing files, but everything came up okay. I'm not sure what else to try. The game worked fine before I installed the Legacy of Rome DLC. I also updated my computer to Windows 8.1 before buying the DLC, so maybe that has something to do with it? I'm not entirely sure, but regardless, any help on the matter would be appreciated.

Please try installing:

First: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555

After that: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328

Then: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
(If that doesn't do anything then http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 )

Then: visit the Windows Update site and allow it to apply all .NET updates/patches it wants to, for all .NET versions.

Then right-click on ck2.exe and ck2game.exe and set them to run as the Admin user.
And then check if you can run the game after that.

My computer said that I have more recent versions of the files that you recommended I install. I then set it to run as the Admin user, but I still got the same error message. If it makes a difference, I have the Steam version of the game.

Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Hello, i have got the same problem. The only diffrence i installed a completly diffrent game when this problem happend. It was working just fine but after i installed the other game i got the same message "Failed to create graphics device. Exiting." I tried to do what was posted but i got the same message, that i have more recent versions. And for some reason i cant find the windows update site to update the .net stuf. I am not that good with computers so i dont understtand what you mean with the last post AndrewT. Could you please help me.

What other game? Does it now work?

update.microsoft.com - Just apply everything, especially everything that mentions .NET .

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then post the first part of that file (from the top down to include "Sound Devices" only) here.

The other files are in the Steam CK2 folder or /logs/ under that.
