It's time for another middle-number release!

Hotfixed version 0.7.0.2 is here.

The main religion overhaul is now complete, which was our milestone for this release. There will be a subsequent overhaul of patron deity and branch traits before v1.0 appears, as well as some more enhancements, but our main religious structure and key functionality is now in place. Most of this was in previous experimental releases, but here's the very latest:

Religion updates:

  • Public notifications of contests for the Grand Caliphate
  • Decision to form the Grand Caliphate if it doesn't already exist
  • Cleanup of triggers and descriptions for religion features

    • Amaunator: Recruit Judge decision
    • Azuth: Hold Magical Symposium decision
    • Bane: Undeath After Death decision
    • Beshaba: Beshaba's Boon decision
Species code overhaul:
  • Odds for species of mixed-race characters readjusted, and the whole reproduction code simplified and clarified
  • Lots of new triggers for different species groups
  • Better tool-tips for many species
  • Deep Imaskari now have proper child portraits
  • Better handling of offspring with only one known parent
  • New hairstyles for Chultan and Akotan characters courtesy of After the End
Fixes:
  • Challenge for the Grand Caliph now works as intended
  • Diwali is no longer available
  • Behaviour of the Shou Lung offmap title cleaned up
  • Followers of the Draconic Pantheon can now choose patrons correctly
  • Player-characters cannot become apprentices
  • Borderer republican clothing is now appropriately post-Shoon
Enjoy, and as ever, let us know what happens!

We're in the middle of some code overhauls, so there's no experimental release just now. But a question I am often asked is: where is this or that character from a Forgotten Realms video game in the mod? Are they playable? And it looks like the full version of Baldur's Gate 3 is going to give us even more playable characters in the future! So here, without further ado, is an extensive but probably not exhaustive list of characters from FR video games who are playable in the mod:
  • Pool of Radiance (1988) - This game was retrospectively redated to 1340, which is before our start dates begin.
    • Tyranthraxus holds the county and duchy of Phlan 1306-1340 to represent his presence in this game, and is playable elsewhere in later dates - see below.
  • Hillsfar (1989)
    • Maalthiir holds Hillsfar, as he does in the game, from 01/07/1357 through to 09/08/1374, and if you start before that, there is a minor plot event for him.
  • Curse of the Azure Bonds (1989):
    • Azoun IV appears in this game. He holds the Kingdom of Cormyr from 1335 through to 01/10/1371, and is a focal character in the Horde minor bookmark.
    • Moander holds the Lost Vale of Tarkhaldale from 01/01/1357 to 01/08/1358.
    • Tyranthraxus reappears, and is playable in Myth Drannor throughout 1357 to reflect his presence in this game.
  • Secret of the Silver Blades (1990):
    • Eldamar the Dreadlord holds Verdigris from 1354 to 01/08/1358.
    • The Silver Blades are hirable mercenaries.
  • Eye of the Beholder (1990):
    • Piergeiron is depicted in this game, although he's not named. He holds the patrician house of Paladinstar from 1312, and the Duchy of Waterdeep from 1314, holding both titles until the end of 1378. The dwarves Teirgoh and Keirgar appear as his courtiers.
  • Eye of the Beholder II (1991):
    • Dran Draggore holds Westwood/Kheldell/Darkmoon from 1355 to 01/09/1358. (We debated where exactly to put Dran, but given that the game is set in a forest near Waterdeep, and was developed by Westwood Associates, this seemed like a good option!)
  • Pools of Darkness (1991):
    • Tyranthraxus also holds Myth Drannor in the last three months of 1358.
    • Manshoon appears in this game. He is Grand Master of the Black Network from 1261 until the start of 1370. He usually holds the king-tier Zhentarim temporal title too, and either Zhentil Keep or the Citadel of the Raven, except for a few months in the middle of 1358...
    • ...when Bane himself holds Zhentil Keep and the Zhentarim title.
  • Neverwinter Nights (MMORPG, 1991):
    • Nasher Alagondar holds Neverwinter all the way through from 1329 to 01/06/1385, and so he also appears in several later games.
    • Ardanac Harpell holds Longsaddle from 1359 to the end of 1375.
  • Gateway to the Savage Frontier (1991):
    • Nasher Alagondar is in this one, too. (See above.)
    • Tessarin 'Longtresses' Alaraun holds Nesmé from 01/09/1358 until the end of 1369.
    • Olger Redaxe holds Gundarlun from 1320 to the end of 1379.
    • And the evil Vaalgamon holds Ascore for the Zhentarim from 05/07/1356 to 01/04/1358.
  • Treasures of the Savage Frontier (1992):
    • Nasher Alagondar returns.
    • Elastul Raurym holds Mirabar from 1356 to the end of 1379.
    • Faurael Blackhammer holds Triboar from 1330 to 01/08/1369.
    • Geildarr Ithym holds Llorkh from 18/12/1356 to the end of 1382.
    • Haeromos Dothwintyl holds Port Llast from 1349 to the end of 1389, except for a break of four months in 1374.
    • Tarnhell Embuirhan holds Mintarn from 1357 to the end of 1389.
    • Tranjer Rolsk holds the Icepeak from 1330 to the end of 1379.
    • Tulgar Wrightsson holds Orlumbor from 1344 to the end of 1360.
  • Eye of the Beholder III (1993):
    • Acwellan holds Myth Drannor for the first nine months of 1358.
  • Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures: Heirs to Skull Crag (1993):
    • Vala of the Silver Blades reappears; as before, she is the leader of a hirable mercenary group.
  • Dungeon Hack (1993):
    • No characters from this game are currently playable.
  • Menzoberranzan (1994):
    • This game takes place before 1340, as Malice Do'Urden appears.
    • Yvonnel Baenre holds Menzoberranzan from time immemorial until 24/11/1358.
  • Blood & Magic (1996):
    • This game takes place in the 7th century. No characters from it are playable, but several appear in history files for the Utter East.
  • Descent to Undermountain (1997):
    • Piergeiron reappears here.

    • Abdel Adrian, the canonical protagonist of this series, is not playable in the series timeframe of the later 1360s, but does eventually come to be Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate from 1457 to 01/05/1482.
    • Amarande holds Cloakwood from 1340 to the end of 1369, and again from 1377 to the end of 1409.

Loving the game! I edited to start on year 20, so as to enjoy a snow elven kingdom, with the Yuir faith cosmopolitan so it can collapse and be reformed again. The only issue currently are the religion traits, and it doesn't crash or anything. Thank ya'll for the hard work!

Great mod.

Noticed a few oddites. Tethyrian culture 'create new vassal' always produces Lightfoot, Cormyrean always produces Sun Elf & Amn always produces Half-Orcs. Tried it out across a few different starts with the same results.

Might be more out there but those ones I noticed when messing around.

I want to do a first time campaign with the mod. could you give me some advices about which character should i play and which are the most interesting ?
The north swords coast is a good starting place, varied factions, a big trap and story events to fall on you and mostly 1 province states.
But really it depends on your interest in FR, if you like BG2 then start in Amn to see the characters or etc. ?

I can recommend some of the characters or realms pictured in the Steam profile for the mod. Also, on Discord we have a channel for interesting characters.

The ambition for the classes gives you a small xp gain, which adds up in the background. Upon a certain threshold, it gives you the updated trait/level.
