Finally managed to push the Japanese off mainland last night but this surrender event just won't fire.

Looking at the event file, NatChi have to occupy Beipin which belongs to Shanxi faction in addition to Manchuria and Korea. So this means either refusing the "Unified Front" or sacrificing Shanxi to the Japanese before counter-attacking.

This was never a problem pre 1.3 patch because both guanxi and shanxi can be annexxed well before Marco Polo incident.

Accepting Unified Front locks in the alliance until Japan surrenders, but the paradox is that the surrender event won't fire if shanxi still holds beipin.

Last option is to sacrifice shanxi to the Japanese. I tried this in Doomsday by forming my line of resistance along the Yellow river awaiting shanxi's annexation. However that game turned into a trench warfare nightmare with the involved province changing hands at each counter-offensive. The stalemate lasted til '43 before I grew bored with this style of warfare.

So I was wondering how do the rest of you go about this strategic dilemma?

Manually fire the event. That's the only real advice I have.

I'm facing a similar situation as Japan totally decimated the Chinese -- enough so the country doesn't exist anymore -- and now I can't get the event to fire despite that the Japanese don't hold any territory other than half of Korea.

In my DD NatChin 1936 GC, Japan only holds Hainan, (the southeast island), Shanxi occupies the other Japanese provines on the mainland, including Korea (as I attacked through Shanxi). Manchuria was annexed by Shanxi and was automatically handed over to me. Back in 1.3, this would probably have led the Japs to offer a peace of some sort, but now I'm stuck. I can't even disband the alliance and get ComChina!

Well, Japan should be amiable to some kind of peace at some point, as it's not a major alliance in itself. The problem is two-fold -

1) Manchuria got annexed, meaning that you no longer get the warscore for alliance peace for the occupied provinces

2) Everything else seems to be held by Shanxi and Japan won't go for a separate peace with them.

The solution would be, indeed, to let Shanxi die, or find a way to kill them before the war starts.
