At the moment the faction screen shows which provinces have a religious building and it cross hatches with which provinces have western influneces.

Problem is, most of the map gets Western Influences all at once when guns become common place. (at least thats how I saw it one event gives it to everyone)

As a result there is very little need to show which provinces have it and which don't. Either none do, or very few do, or all do. Pluss the grey cross hatch that shows this is very ugly!

Rather than show Western influences with cross hatching why not show which clans have pledged allegiance to a particular faction on the faction map mode. This would be more appropriate, more useful and more pretty!

But that's not what it's for and no, it would not be more useful than seeing what's built in each kori since you can just check the members of each faction on the faction screen (and that only applies to the clan leader anyway).

Western influence becomes "common knowledge" once 50% of Japan is affected by it, at which point it immediately spreads to 100% of Japan. It doesn't really matter that it's "ugly," because you aren't meant to play the game in it. It's just for seeing which kori have which religious buildings in them.

I'm still not happy with the western spread and might tweak it for the patch if I can find the time. I'd like it to take longer time and spread fully in a few early adopter clans, before becoming common knowledge so you have the possibility of a smaller clan taking on a bigger and having the advantage of arquebusiers.

Is there any potential to randomize the initial bulwark of Christianity (therefore offering some diversity among games - instead of constantly favouring the Southern Clans)? Theoretically, severe storms (common in that region of the Pacific) could cause the Portuguese/Dutch trade ships to veer off course and land in different areas of Japan.

There is nothing in the code favouring the southern clans. The initial event is completely random, so I'm not sure where you got that from.

I think you misunderstood me there. What I was suggesting is for provinces to be the colour of the building in them and then the cross hatching to show the religion of the clan owning them. Like the religious map mode in EU3. You could always show western influences by making them brighter or on highlight like the HRE mode. But once the common knowledge event has fired there is no need to know, thus knowing which provinces have WI is only useful for around 30 years. BTW on the subject of pretty the Christian colour is really fugly :)

It's a bit strange at the moment. The portugese got stranded in the middle of Honshu in about 1510 (I was the Nanbu in the east). 10 years later the Ikko Ikki started arming themselves with muskets. Another 10 years later it was common knowledge and I got access to them. Apart form those three events I didn't hear a peep.

A bit more interatction would be fun, trade treaties with the portugese or the dutch or something. I got guns (and christianity too) without ever seeing a european. Even the Shogun 1 option of siging up to God and guns at the same time (locking you out of the other factions) or waiting for the dutch to role round only interested in trade would be more fun. An event chain or two wouldn't go amiss :)
