I am having trouble understanding the criteria for when someone joins or leaves a faction. I have given a vassal land to make their opinion go to 100, but they will still stay in.

Of all the things in Crusader Kings 2 managing vassals seems to be the hardest, so any tips would help.

Afaik, many things are very random, like factions and scheming. I.e. somebody can have 100 opinion of you and still go for independence or plot to murder you...

I can give you the general tips of trying to respect de-jure structure, which limits internal disliking and warring a bit. If possible, you may also want to outlaw internal wars.

It just seems impossible to guarantee the faction stays under 100 percent of my troop level, granted someone did excommunicate me.
Imprison them (preferably with justification).
  • Vassals in prison are automatically removed from factions.
  • Send the marshal to suppress revolts in their current location, if the imprisonment chance is low.
  • You can generate imprisonment reasons in many ways, eg:
    • Spying focus (from WoL)
    • Excommunication (but this might be tricky for you because you are already excommunicated)
    • Exploit: Send a "stop plot" request to someone who will say "yes"; about 3 days before they reply, send "stop backing plot" to all the backers; 3 days later, the plot stops; 1 day later, all the backers say they refuse to stop backing the plot.
  • If you have the option to put them in house arrest, do so - this ensures they won't die for a long long time.
  • Warning: If you fail to imprison a faction member, you may trigger the faction revolt.
Alternatively, you can imprison faction members by causing them to revolt as an individual - eg. plot to revoke one of their counties, they will normally refuse, and they will be imprisoned when you win the war.

Outside of imprisoning you can also use your spymaster (scheme job) to countercoerce them, so to speak.
Convince them to leave or to not join a faction.

Not 100% sure they are leaving when already a faction member, but i believe to recall it worked.
At least that was the to first to go option in the past..

This did happen once in my last playthrough. Unfortunately, a vassal who just happened to be in a faction when I got the random event targeting him occurred only this once. It would be a lot easier to test if it was a targeted action like forcing vassals with hooks out of factions in CK3.
