There has been much talk on reddit about players wanting new end game crisis.
I have a suggestion along the lines of the Yuuzhan Vong from Star Wars (of course we'll name it something different
).
If you have noticed ALL the end game crisis doesn't involve ground troops (Become the Crisis simply blows up entire star systems). So why not have an extragalactic empire (with its own unique shipset!) invade our galaxy? And instead of destroying worlds they invade and enslave the local population. Better still...they migrate some of their own pops here and we get to capture them (and enslave or purge them in return)! So this will involve a lot of ground combat since it's better for us to recapture our planets and liberate our own enslaved citizens coupled with an unprecedented chance to obtain unique population (and possibly traits which cannot normally be added during empire creation) from an end game crisis empire. While making ground troops more important in the game (imo they are currently quite under utilised).
The mechanics should be fairly simple. We can borrow the prethoryn scourge mechanics except that after invasion the population is enslaved and a certain number of end game crisis pops are 'spawned' depending on the number of enforcer, soldier and ruler jobs avaliable on the planet (or AI can demolish some buildings to build some unique ones which provide these jobs; which of course we are able to capture as well). AI can be set such that most infrastructure are intact and they do not demolish them upon successful invasion (After all they need slaves in the mines and foundries for resources to maintain and bolster their extragalactic fleets a long way from home...). Gives us an incentive to retake our planets intact and minimise collateral damage.
