the longer you have before the war the more a-historical things you do. that makes it that much harder for the game to A) stay remotely historical and B) have the AI stay competitive.

Pretty much the only way the AI will stay competitive if you build up a-historically is to react a-historically, screwing historical outcomes...and we all know how well that is received on these forums ;)

so having more time to build up to the war will only increase either or both of these problems.

I think it would be very cool to allow modding let's say from the year 0 to 2200 :) Without hacking the exe file.

First off, regarding zombies: WIN!

I can see it now:

Zombies '36

Time to build: 1 day
Cost: 0.1 IC
Manpower Cost: 0

Org: 1%
Morale: 100%
Softness: 105%
Hard Attack: 0
Soft Attack: 1
Defensiveness: 0
Toughness: 0
Air Defense: 0
Supression: -1
Maximum Speed: 0.5
Supply Consumption: 0.0

Zombies '45 - now, with live grenades and anti-tank mines strapped to them!

Time to build: 1 day
Cost: 0.1 IC
Manpower Cost: 0

Org: 1%
Morale: 100%
Softness: 105%
Hard Attack: 1
Soft Attack: 2
Defensiveness: 0
Toughness: 0
Air Defense: 0
Supression: -1
Maximum Speed: 0.5
Supply Consumption: 0.0

That said, I really have no issue with the AI acting strangely in earlier-than-suggested scenarios, so long as it's an option. Otherwise, sure, keep the regular date.

But really, some rudimentary support for modding the dates would be fine, too (namely, no braindead AI. Stupider than usual is fine... but not braindead).

Well for the zombie-idea, wouldn't it be cool with a campaign where you set up quarantine zones and erected barricades in a futile attempt to stop the creeping horde of the living dead? Perhaps Paradox should throw in some missions inside the "plauge zone" where you need to collect samples for the research of an eventual cure?

To those who didnt like the idea of Nazi Zombies: who else would be deranged enough to pull a stunt like that? The Nazis research into the paranormal is definetly a rich source for any game. (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, yes!)

But starting at 1914 would probably cause an immensly ahistorical game though. I'll stick with my date, -33.

Not to mention that Hearts of Iron is a World War II grand strategy game, not a Great War grand strategy game.

...that said, an actual, official Great War scenario/game would be fantastic. :D

My Idea would be this:

First Expansion: Extend the timeframe to 1933.

2nd: Add an entirely new campaign from 1911 to 1919, and not connecting the games. It would have its own tech tree and such.

1933 with the Nazi rise to power till 1953 with the end of the Korean War. That would just about cover the entire Era and allow for both Historical and not so historical outcomes.
By the way I think that more Events and definitely Decisions like in IN would not be a bad idea.
