Believe whatever you want to believe. I don't care. I'm not asking for a fix, I'm complaining that this "ultra rare" event seems all too rare, contrived, and ridiculous to deal with. I do NOT use mods, I do NOT cheat. One of the first things I did when I got suspicious was do the whole steam file verification crap. That said everything looked fine. And in every single game, the rules were set to default.

I started them all the same: Ruler designer for a blank slate ruler (no traits, no stat changes, nothing, just a 16 year old female ruler with a lowest tier intrigue education trait).

That particular game I hit Lunatic sometime around age 19, I don't know if anything in particular triggered it. I also had a kid around that time. It wasn't until about 5 years later I got the howling even, the panting, et cetera. I got that at pretty much the same time I got the demon spawn event, and the courtier maid. It was maybe another year before I got Chess.

I've been doing nothing all day but playing CK2, basically. According to steam, I have 1,186 hours played. I'm pretty addicted to it.

What I've been doing since I installed RD is starting as a Christian Chief or Count. I get things setup, then hit max speed until I get something interesting going on. I'm currently on game 11. Last game ended due to illness, pretty standard. This one? We'll see.

And yes, I've hit that stupid chess event a total of 9 times now. In less than oh, say, 4 days since I installed RD?

At this point it's without a doubt my most hated feature. It's ruined game after game for several days now for me, back to back. The first time it happened, I was shocked, and thought, "Well, that was interesting! Something new!" By the 4th time or so, it had really lost its charm.

Apparently, the only way to "play" anymore is to specifically tailor your ruler to be able to have a fighting chance. Wee, that sounds like fun - every ruler must be a Genius Deceitful Drunken Gamemaster, and if they aren't, well, too bad, insert-author-avatar-event pops up to instakill you. There's no hedging your bet there, the odds are so ridiculously stacked against you in that event.

Uninstall ck2 then reinstall it, verifying the game files only to my knowledge checks that all the correct files are present it does not check to see if they have been accidentally modified or not updated by a patch etc.

Open the file /common/on_actions/00_on_actions.text in Notepad and search for the text string RIP.30220. Change the number 25 to zero, the line should now read

#Chess with death
0 = RIP.30220

Bingo, this event should never appear again.

Due to the way the weighting system works, doesn't the chance of getting events like these change massively depending on what DLC you have? If you loaded only Reaper's Due, would you have a huge chance of getting this event chain if you got Gamemaster and lived to a nice old age?

The OP's situation may not be as ridiculous as it seems.

I call it the custom character curse.... 95% of the time my custom characters die young through events or become incapable from a battle. I find it very rare for one of my custom characters to live past 40 but their sons seem fine.

I have never gotten this event. Does it just appear randomly or when you are actually supposed to die (low health, old age, during combat)?

I had that event once only too. It was when I like to make myself gamemaster because I like games in real life too and being good at narrow flank seems really cool. Then comes the plat chess with death event one time and every step I saw like "You can take this option because you are a game master" and they are all like good moves and I was like "Mom being good at strategy games can save your life" lol. That was probably my favourite event, but it never happen again... Now I just make all my guys administrators for +10 vassal opinion so I hope it stay not happening lol

Weird I only had this event happen once and it screwed my mongol nestorian kingdom of syria campaign. Turned my dynasty from the mongol khans who beat the abbasids and stole Damascus to a child hindu who watched ass it all crumbled. Entertaining end to a campaign if a little frustrating.

It's definitely a bad event, but it is exceedingly rare for most of us. In my experience, a 30-something ruler is about 10x more likely to keel over from "a natural death" then they are from the chess with death event. Nothing in the game is more frustrating than the unexpected and totally random "natural death".

It'a not tied specifically to the Black Death, but rather to low health, which is indeed generally the result of disease.

The code is on the previous page of this thread. Bubonic plague, specifically, being present in the region increases the chances. Though low health does as well.

It's an immersion-breaking feature that I truly loathe. But tonight? Just a minute ago? I learned to hate on a new, epic level.

Because this time when the stupid nun showed up, guess what I did? I immediately imprisoned and executed her.

And guess what. I actually did play "chess with death" in that I was playing against a character the game said was dead. THAT is crap. THAT is a bug. THAT is garbage.

No, death can't die, you can attempt to kill it, but it will still return...

I think it isn't too bad, the event only shows up once or twice a game and I've survived two times (both times as a Zoroastrian, btw) either by beating death, or taking the 'not today' option...
