Hey folks,

Just played a splendid CK2 HIP game as the victorious Danish crusaders-cum-Cathar heretics and would love to continue this game into EUIV. However, I don't much like vanilla EUIV and much prefer the deeper complexity to MEIOU and Taxes.

As such, a couple of questions:

1) Is this even possible? I tried going at it and EUIV froze while loading.

2) Do I lose my heretical leanings in the conversion? I know this was originally the case in the converter but I think that's been fixed.

3) Any other tips or pointers?

Many thanks.

Edit: I'm also a Mac user if that impacts anything.

1. It is possible, not possible currently. Ordep, who is the main guy behind the converter, is not working on a converter to MEIOU and taxes for the following reasons : 1) he's busy being regent for VIET due to my illness; 2) he is waiting for the EUIV scene to mature, so his work on the converter can utilize and in a sense cooperate with all the modding that is available with a more mature modding scene; 3) he also wants to take time to get the current converter working even better, and generally get his main ideas out and in a stable, enjoyable, and polished form (which is difficult to due with (1)); 4) on a similar vein to 3), Ordep essentially wants to make sure the HIP converter achieves a level of completeness.

Of course I'm not Ordep, but the above is based on what he's said on the forums and my discussions with him, and if think it gets the general idea (Ordep can of course correct me if I'm wrong).

2. With the hip converter you can in fact retain your original beliefs which will become a "normal" religion in EUIV. So if you convert a hip game, you'll see Cathars and Mazdakis running around on the map if they were present in your CKII game for example, and if you played with VIET you can see the heresies and religions introduced in VIET as well.

3. Thanks to Ordep's excellent work, the HIP converter also has a more nuanced approach to tech allocation, which may in general be good for you. No more will you see the last remaining Catholic backwater duchy in Finland have uber-tech in a Zoroastrian and West African Pagan dominated map, for example, while the same Zoroastrian and Aest African Pagans may get better tech than what vanilla would've given them if they meet certain requirements. There are many other good existing and planned tweaks - Ordep's talked about them in length in the VIET thread (as his work for the HIP converter was originally just for VIET before VIET became part of the HIP project) but I dunno what those posts are.

Cybr pretty much told you the most important pointers, but to add some tidbits,

1) M&T compatibility is in my list, but not exactly on the top tbh. As cybr said I'm waiting for the EUIV modding scene (including M&T itself) to mature before I get started on that. Some people might think doing a HIP->M&T converter is a matter of simply changing the map, but really the hardest part is making the religious mechanics of M&T function correctly with the HIP converter's own mechanics in religious. That's doable, but it'll take time, and at the moment, my priority in terms of "making the convert compatible with..." is of course SWMH, who is a HIP member which still doesn't have a working converter.

2) Like cybr said, you get to keep your heresies, all of them (well, except the buddhist ones since I felt didn't make sense in EUIV context). What cybr didn't say is that unlike vanilla's "heresies" which are actually just a name change from their parent religions (so they play exactly the same), in the HIP converter all religions and heresies are unique and play differently.

3) As cybr said, the converter's tech allocation system is abit of a selling point for the converter. Lately I've also been working on the cultural breakup mechanics (namely to breakup the german culture blob) so expect that not so far down the road, and of course, more to come :)

Love the work you've been doing on this all Ordep! One question about heresies in the converter as I been able to actually accomplish and test this yet. With the 2.0+ vanilla CK2 mechanic of a heresy becoming the primary incarnation of the religion once it is more populous than the original religion form (i.e. Cathar having more provinces than Catholic and so Catholic becomes the heresy instead), how does this transfer over to EU4? Will the Cathar non-heresy from CK2 be called Catholic in EU4? Will it still be called Cathar but have all the same mechanics as vanilla Catholicism? Will Cathar and/or the Catholic heresy undergo the Protestant and Reformed changes in EU4?

Very curious about the details of all the religion work you've done so far but can't find a centralized post on the converter operations status, would love to read more about the detailed mechanics of your converter work!

Thanks for the positive feedback, Lately I've been mostly working on VIET but I really look foward to putting more work on the converter with RoI around the corner :)

Who is the parent religion is irrelevant for the religions. If Catharism becomes the main religion it will be the same catharism as if it was an heresy.

I actually did almost-daily dev-diaries leading up to the update that introduced the heresies, presenting each and everyone of them and explaining their traits. They're still, there, probably burried under 100 pages. Making a guide on the HIP wiki for both the religions and the tech allocation mechanics is definitely on my to do list. Still, it's abit of a catch-22, my modding time is restricted, so if I'm writting a guide, I'm not modding, then cybr gets mad at me for taking too long to write my part of the VIET update. I'm hoping that I can finish my work ahead of Cybr in the development of VIET 1.6.0 and the next converter, soI can squeeze in the time to work on that guide, but the guy is working really fast these days so that's abit of a long shot :p
