I watched a bit of the live stream, but didn't hear anything about a restored Roman Empire exported. Will it end up as Byzantium like user-made converters? If it will export as the Roman Empire, does that mean that there is a decision to reform it in EU? Anyone hear about this?

Are you talking about CK2? or EU? What I am asking is is the restored empire from CK2 is exported as "The Roman Empire" instead of "Byzantium"

As I see "Unique flags will be created" and that in EU there is a The Roman Empire you can form as Byzantium.. I don't see why it wouldn't.

Edit, sorry about the deleted post. I wanted to revise it. <_<

In an exported game, the Roman Empire is called the Roman Empire and behaves differently to Byzantium with different ideas, a different name and probably a slightly different tint of purple. I doubt there's a decision to reform it in EU, I think you have to finish the job in CKII and then manage it in a more conservative fashion (no proclaiming ancient glories) in EUIV.

If they've gone through all that effort, logic would dictate you'll be able to reform it in game...

If they did the sensible thing is the first place and just dispose of this Byzantium nonsense and correctly call it the Roman Empire right up until its demise in '53, there would be no reason to have this conversation.

They're not putting in a whole new country in that sense, the mod dynamically generates it like the other thousand titles it can add for CKII. They just wrote some national ideas. I'm not sure if you've ever modded a PDS title before, but adding "a whole new country" is laughably easy compared with writing other elements of code. Writing the Roman National ideas was probably something conceived over lunch and implemented in about 10 minutes. The rest is handled by the converter, which you can use if you get CKII to enjoy the easter egg for supporting two titles in PDS product lineup. Also, 90% of the playerbase? Don't throw percentages around.

If they did the sensible thing is the first place and just dispose of this Byzantium nonsense and correctly call it the Roman Empire right up until its demise in '53, there would be no reason to have this conversation.

Same logic says we should call a variety of nations by generally unrecognised names just because that was the "official" term. That's never been well received by anyone, and it wont happen. Byzantium is the easily recognised term for what existed there in 1453, and will stay.

The converter imports independent realms from CK2 into "whole new countries" in EU4. That's the entire point of having a converter, so that all that work can be done automatically and without great effort. All they've done beyond that is included unique national ideas for some of those potential titles, like the Roman Empire and the Jomsvikings.

In history class me and a lot of people around me actually learned of it as the eastern roman empire (though we didn't get a lot of it, most focussed on the western halve of the roman empire as I'm Dutch). Byzantium was a name I learned through gaming. So I always believed that actually calling it the ERE would not only be more official, but also more recognisable.

I never learned about it in history class. British history lessons are utterly appalling. I only really remember reading about it as the ERE following its split from Rome up until the conclusion of the migration period. After that, the only name I link with it is Byzantium, as the true Rome has faded away.

Calling the pathetic dying rump of a state the Eastern Roman Empire in 1444 is similar to calling the 480s rump post-Odoacer Roman state in Illyria the Western Roman Empire - rather anachronistic and silly.

In general though I agree ERE is a more fitting title for the Byzantium Empire reformed or in CK2. :)

.............. Constantinople is the last outpost of the remaining romans, with the strongest link to the romans of the 4th century - ruled by roman emperors, with a continuity in terms of territory and culture. The sack of Constantinople divided the empire and stole its capital - the divided empire is not so much diferent from the various crisis that happened during the third century that created several empires, each with its claim on the title, only to be united with Aurelian. A similar thing happened when Michael VIII reconquered Constantinople and was proclaimed another legitimate sucessor of Augustus.
If Mr. Nepos held Rome in 480, and only Rome, it would be fair to call it the WRE. The Illyrian state is similar to a Morean state with no capability of recapturing more lands - a tiny outpost that could be considered a pretender state to the title of Roman Empire (much like Trebizond or Epirous in their earlier days).

Byzantine is the name modern historians gave the ERE to help separate the ancient Empire from its medieval remains in the East. While the Byzantines did indeed call themselves Roman in their time, it still wasn't technically Roman, Just a break away nation.

First of all, because the converter makes a mod for EU4 out of a CK2 save rather than just trying to turn it into an EU4 save, flags and countries are all preserved easily. Secondly, I'm not convinced that the devs really meant that the Roman Empire has its own set of unique ideas. I believe the question was whether they used generic ideas or had their own, and I suspect by the reply "they have their own" the devs meant that they would use the Byzantium national ideas. That's what I'm going to continue to believe until either I see it in-game or one of the devs categorically states that the Roman Empire uses different national ideas to Byzantium.

Well they stated their doing something special for sunset invasion Aztecs too so why not adding flavor to the ROMAN EMPIRE.
