You'll probably have to use the cheat every time you load though, and check your character's ID from the save file too. Finding out how to actually unlock pagans would make it hassle-free.

is using the cheat

Ok here's what I got.

If your interested in starting as a specific character then its fairly easy; find the character in the history/characters/ folder, change religion of character to a Christian subtype (Catholic will do). Start the game as the character, then immediately save and quit. Find your save file (probably in Libraries/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/ if your in Windows) Change back the character's religion in there to the original subtype (such as Sunni, etc) and save. You should now be able to play as 'normal'. Don't forget to change back the character file in history, best to do it now or you might forget (or leave it in for interesting implosion of nations) for when you start a new game.

In regards to making it easier by starting as Pagans and Muslims: I tried playing around and so far this is what I've discovered: Religions come in types and then subtypes. Christians obviously have catholic, orthodox, etc. You can make new types of religions, but you still can't play them. You can however, make new subtypes under the Christian group and they will be playable. For the really desperate, moving over all (or the ones you want) sub types from the non-Christian groups will make them playable right from the start. The downside to this is naturally that they all act as if they are Christians in all but the few events and decisions that run on sub types, not main types.

Either there is a carefully hidden line saying 'playable=Christian' somewhere in the files, or the Christian group is hardcoded somewhere.

Edit: Didn't see the edited OP to cheats, but regardless for the purpose of modding.

Works great, thx m8! Although after this you need to resize levys in provinces owned by you :/ now they are "catholic" a lot less troops than for example pagan province would normally have.

Help me comprehend why you found it necessary to post something so redundant on a thread that is over a year old?

Because...
