Several days ago I sat there and realized that I have never gotten to play with autonoms very much for some reason, they was never one of my starting independent npc factions I meet upon planetfall so it took me 20+ restarts until I finally had at least one autonom near my starting capital.

Then upon playing with autonoms for awhile, I notice they are awesome.

They was the NPC faction that I never knew I wanted until I played with them.

In picture above that's one of my sentinels. I'm playing as Vanguard Promethean + Patron doctrine.

I noticed Networking gives +1 level to stagger, and which means my Hardlight gives another +1 for a total of a massive impact stagger hit. Lets see, that immolation matrix module from modules that Autonom sells is awesome, if it passes the check then you get a immolation, and if enemy resists, you get a burn instead and in turn because I'm a promethean, this means my third module now kicks in 100% of the time. Doesn't matter if it passes or fail. Its gonna activate and then sentinel should you be brave enough to charge into one doing a overwatch?

You get staggered then set on fire and be torn apart.

Check this out. My favorite Laser tank the sniper of death is back. Best of all, its late game stuff which means pvpfest is forbidden from touching this kind of stuff.
20200413175524_1.jpg

And this is why people should keep their bases neat and tidy and clean of debris and sweep up the skeletons, etc. Sure, I know star union fell 300 years ago but that's no excuse for keeping rooms messy because all it does is turn your base into a waiting deathtrap xD

20200413194946_1.jpg

That's right, my laser tanks now have +2 range and I decided I wanted to blast the Reapers in front first and then accidently blocked the AI units from advancing to shoot at my tanks. Those reapers was blown apart without firing a single shot at my tanks. All enemy units in that reaper base was deleted.

Weakness? Just get thermal reistance/immunity and I go uh oh. Its all lasers lasers and even more lasers. Good thing I have alot of firearm/kinetic units ready should that happen.

The ultimate irony is because they require a mod to work with the Autonoms the Assembly isn't particularly good with them. Vanguard and Dvar are the best because of their ease of access to machine units.

I don't think that is irony. Most people percive them as "the robot" faction but there's actually a misconception of what they are. Lore describes them as "organ scavangers" because they need those to substitute their own as they cannot naturally reproduce (I wonder why they didn't think of "breeding" organ-donors but hey, I'm a simple human). As such they don't lean into "mechanical" or "robot" side of things, I would rather call them space necromancers or bioengineered soldiers, but more on the biological side of things (not like the Necrons from W40k).

In this regards I like an idea of a "mech faction" like W40k Tau, but since we already have mech-heavy Vanguard that is not likely to happen.

My best guess is because they was so busy slaying each other and then accidently rendered themselves sterile. Then they decided to complete their ascension into new form by leaving behind the old habits of old humans, and this includes breeding xD breed inefficiently when they can just simply grow/build new parts and scavenge parts.

I have a feeling that the assembly's current form is more of their transitional form which is good enough to get them to their final end goal. Because honestly in longterm scavenging parts from foes is inefficient and dangerous. I mean.. if a assembly cyborg showed up and wanted my right arm so he can be whole again, I'd put a bullet in his head immediately. But if they are already fighting a foe, then scavenging enemy parts is using enemy resources against him and is pretty good tactic. Assuming the foe doesn't poison the corpses of their fallen so assembly can't take advantage of them tho.

Here's the original description of Assembly from the digital Artbook:

"At a distant blacksite planet, the next generation of
bionic and genetically enhanced soldiers were being
produced. But during the collapse, the cloned test
subjects rebelled against their Imperial masters.
Facing extermination and without any
way to reproduce naturally, the Ancestors started
patching themselves up using organs, body parts
and machinery from the battlefields. From this, a
new race emerged — The Assembly.
Now the Assembly looks at each world
they come across with one thought in mind — how
to turn its inhabitants into organ donors for their
growing empire. Diplomacy is not their strong suit.
Instead, they are a research-heavy faction, jacking
into its own citizens’ brains to borrow spare processing
power, among other things."

PS: Ah sorry, reading further into the artbook it turns out they do produce replacement parts/organs on their own. They are scientists and engineers at heart :)

Go to your local Steam directory on disk (where you install you Steam games, folder with games should be called steamapps > common or sth). If you have premium edition you should have "Artbook", "OST" and "Wallpapers" folders in your AoW directory.

Autonoms also go sorta well with Amazons imo. While they can't take advantage of the Autonom network connection, they have laser units and Autonom can use their self-repair mod to make up for the fact that they and Secret Tech-based machines lack compatible sustainability mods/abilities from the Amazons.

Now if only Shrikes and Arborian Sentinels can equip Promethean Thermal Targeting to fully synergise with the Autonom Immolation mod...

I´m almost certain their current form already is their ideal: They want to achieve peace and unity with other groups of people the same way the original assembly test subject rebels, and imperial researchers became one(by exchanging parts). Its not that they lack tech(neither cloning tech, nor engineering), and since they first left their origin planet they don´t lack resources either, at least not that much.
They could be upgraded versions of Paragon Perfects, or however you envision your ideal cyborgs, but they truly prefer to be a walking or crawling genderless mess of repurposed scrap metal, own and scavanged flesh held together by nanites.

That said in my eyes Assembly look as techy "necromancers" or even a cult that simply has a taste for macabre :D You don't dwell on thoughts of madmen even if they talk like sophisticated scientists :D

I can't exactly put my finger on it, but I think people at Triumph were inspired by this here movie:

(Virus from 1999)

PS: Back to the topic, I wonder which of the existing NPC factions will go well with Shakarn. Autonom seem to be a good candidate cus lasers and just maybe with the "Networked" buffs (Sonokarn with extended range anyone?).
