I haven't played in a very long time, so I figured I would start a '44 scenario for lols. Needless to say, I was dreadfully rusty, and that didn't last long. So now I'm playing a French '36 campaign gone horribly awry, and I noticed the old exploit where expeditionary forces become yours when you jiggle something just so.
I would prefer to avoid doing this accidentally, but I can't do that if I don't know what I did to cause it. I probably read about it in an AAR, but lord knows which one or how long ago that was. And perhaps it was even in an older version of HOI2. Does anyone around here know about this exploit?

Thanks.

Off the cuff thought. When you save a game & you have their exp divs on your own transports, then restart from the saved game & their divs are now yours. Or just the passing of enough time and they become your nationality.

there are plenty ways to do that
1. load an mced unit onto your own transport.
2. send your transport as exp force.
3. retake the transport.
4. unload the unit, its yours.

oc there is the strat redeploy pool bug too (mc of your ally, strat redeploy their troops, let your ally get annexed before units arrives. upon arrival they will be yours.)

planes can be stolen too if your ally get annexed and their planes are mced by you AND NOT stationed on your own territory. (for example as germany ally and mc with hun and rom, get rom planes rebase to budapest and let sov annex rom.)

i dont know a way to steal ships, but i bet it's quite possible also.

An easy way to force it is to deselect anything, right click over the army sprite, and select new. Moving it to a new corps changes the nationality, and you get a free general to boot.
What I am talking about was unintentional. It may have had something to do with pausing the game the same hour the forces were sent. When I selected a couple of them, their nationality changed to mine. They didn't change corps or anything. Just switched nationality. I haven't tested this yet, though. If the UK decides to send me any more, I may try to reproduce it so I know.

As written in "Advice for Playing UK", playing as Britain I inherited all of Belgium's divisions because Belgium had no MP to fix them. Considering the work and time involved I would not call it an exploit but a dedicated rescue mission.

I use transports but half the time it fails to work even though all is same-same.

The sure way to know what will be the result (what will be the new nationality of unit to be inherited) is for country wishing to claim unit (say UK wants the unit) to use their transport to pick up unit from the unit's country. Now UK moves unit to UK and there expeditions it. Next take TP from any other country (say France), pick up unit from England and take to country of that TP (France). Upon landing the unit changes to UK. Reason: "Return to original owner" as far the French TP is concerned would refer back to the UK and not back to original-original owner. Minor changes in TP basing, not full unit ORG or new leader can cause it to fail. And some countries like France just won't let UK take unit no matter how many times I tried.

Other way to get unknown results is to expedition the TP to some country and pick up some unit and transport it somewhere else. Sometimes unit changes nationality without any rhyme or reason that I have managed to figure out. This is useful if UK is trying to claim Canada unit and - after failing with 4 trans-Atlantic trips - just use an Belgium TP expeditioned to Portugal and transport the Canadian unit resisting British nationality to Denmark and maybe it will become Portuguese, Belgium or Danish. Now can start a new attempt that avoids cross-Atlantic travel. :D
