how do I do this?

1. I did a royal marriage.
2. I claimed their throne.
3. I started a war with them.
4. I put them in a personal union.
5. ???
6. profit!

also is there a point in waiting with claiming throne or would there be a point in not waging war on them to force them in a PU?

also, how do you take the italian states that are not monarchies?

Well, I think claiming throne/fabricate claims is a very effective way of conquering Europe early.

I did a game as England where I had PUs with Castille, Aragon, Poland, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden and Norway before 1415.

I also controlled the british isles and had conquered France. (HRE you get cores on if you inherit a PU there (if you are a member).

Are your numbers questions?

1. Good?

2. Okay?

3. Amagad, make love not war!

4. Victory!

5. ???

6. Yay!

Well, if you wait they might get a heir, that would be problematic since you can't claim then.

I would suggest forming HRE for those in the north, the only one left then are Papal States and Venice, and both of those you can conquer with imperialism or whatever feels good.

You could use liberation CB and just annex them anyhow.

conquer republics/theocracies-release as vassals (their govt will now be same as yours)-cancel vassal, then PU/inherit as normal.....there may be problems with this if your govt is an empire.

I think the that the OP wanted step #5 clarified.

I think that after 50 years of smooth PU, the partner nation becomes integrated. I haven't managed this myself. My latest partner insulted its way out of the relationship - since the AI had a shrewd idea of when my king would die. Since it was Ming, I didn't make a fuss about it, because it was going to be troublesome in one way or another. I can't help but wonder how I might have prevented that. Does high infamy scare them away?

In DW, you can integrate the partner early, which works much like annexing a vassal. Low infamy is good, high diplomacy is better.

You think wrong. You may integrate after 50 years, but for no cores. It is not so much an inherit as an annex. You also gain 1 or 2 infamy per non culture group province.

Your partner will insult you whenever you are weaker. They will not, even in that condition, if you are at war together.

When you have a PU in place, there is a chance of merging the other nation into yours when your monarch dies. This is based on your relative prestige and your relations with each other, as well as stability and (I believe) infamy. You can get a pretty good idea from the junior partner's tooltip, though it isn't 100% accurate.

In the case of inheritance, you get insta-cores on their provinces that are either of your culture group, or (if you are in HRE) are in the HRE. I think it might only give you provinces they have cores on, but I'm not sure. You get no infamy for gaining provinces by inheritance.

The junior will let insults fly if you are at peace and have a smaller army than they do, if I remember correctly. (If you load up Denmark at game-start you'll see what I mean.)
