I would actually prefer the expansion(s) not adding to the timeline.
Both starting earlier and ending later would need some serious (re)design decisions to make the game work somewhat realistic in that timeframes, while at the same time keeping the (hopefully) great wwII gameplay.
This sounds like a lot of work to me, work I'd rather see them invest in expanding the game itself, adding more depth, choices and in general making Hoi3 a better WWII game.
As it is in fact that what most of us buy a wwII game ^^

I want a game that's focused on military solutions to ideological conflicts in a geopolitical context - i.e., a game that accurately reflects the 1936-1948 period.
I think a Doomsday-like expansion up to 1953 would be great since it would not require a great amount of modification to the tech system and if even only half the stuff PI has said about the AI is WAD then it would be extreemly interesting to play the years after WW2.
But why? It really doesn't sound fun to just sit around and threathen the USSR with your nukes for 8 years.
the first thing I want is just a no end date (play at your own risk). With the map as big as it is, no way could Germany even make a dent in the US by '49
The map is not bigger in HOI3 than in HOI2.
Earth has not changed.

World conquest will take longer ONLY if game mechanic is changed (battle duration, unit speed).
It might not be bigger but it has a lot more provinces.
So? The time to travel one bigger province and the time to travel four smaller provinces should be same. (Of course, battles are likely to last about same time or even longer than in HoI2, and there is a lot more of them.)
Not sure if units should be able to strat move faster than that, but definitely that would be unacceptable for aircraft. Not exactly true, the smallest unit in time in HoI2 was 1 hour. Units which travel at high speed, most notably (fast) planes, would be able to travel at a maximum speed of 1 province / hour. This meant that travelling over a certain speed would be irrelevant depending on the province size. You don't really need a plane to get this effect, in a modern car you can travel from the South of The Netherlands to the north in about 2 hours (Venray to Groningen). Now if I look in the screenshot that's about 7 provinces so at least 7 hours in the HoI2 system. The distance is about 250 km (Venray to Groningen) which would leave a top speed of ~36km / hour.
Now this would be very fast for land units, but it's all over very high infrastructure terrain, motorised units should be able to reach those kind of speeds - when they're unopposed. So if the units would travel faster than the province size allows they would indeed travel slower. Just like aircraft did in HoI2
'Speaking' of aircraft, I haven't seen a video where aircraft travel was present, but it'll be very interesting to see if they solved this problem, or that every aircraft is stuck at snail speed.
