Hi. You have to have the national idea of 'Quest for the New World' to recruit either conquistadors or explorers to scour for new lands. The colonist button is grayed out because the land has to be either connected to one of your provinces or be reachable by sea. So if you are a landlocked nation you have to obtain a sea bound province to gain access to potential colonies in 'the new world'.

Well i gues u are an european nation. To send colonist u need at least 1 port. So if u play switzerland (no ports if u dont get one) then u can`t send colonist.

Olso ur target destination (the province where u want to send a colonist) must be:
1. a costal province
2. if an inland province, it must be linked to the sea using a costal province.
Bassicaly it means this: your colonist must go from your capital to the target province using only your provinces and the see.
So ports are everyting when u want to colonise.

Crazy question. How do I expand to new world. My send colonist is grayed out and says that I do not have access to ports. Am I missing something?

I'

i know you need a province with a port in the new world if you want to colonize inland new world territory. probably this means you also need a province with a port in the old world to start colonializing at all. have to admit i never encountered this as all nations i've played so far already start with a port ;)

anyways, if my hunch is correct, you'll simply need to annex a port in europe.

You need a port connected to your captial for it to work. The only way I was able to send colonists to the New World as Burgundy was by annexing Lorraine and connecting the capital to my Belgian and Netherlander provinces.

your colonist will start from your capital, it may only travel over your own country's land, and over sea. Imagine this, you have no military access and want to bring a soldier from your capital to the province that you want to take (you may build ships). If you can, you can send a colonist there
