Hello everyone, I thought it would be interesting to expand the role of mercenaries in EUIV, after all, mercenaries had quite a prominent role for most of the time frame covered by the game and this does not seem to be properly represented.
My suggestion is to add the option of hiring mercenary generals that cost gold rather than monarch points and perhaps some events linked to ones prestige and legitimacy and the general's culture that could lead to that general either abandoning you with some of the mercenary units or giving the enemy an option to buy him out. To make it worth using them, they should not be tied to army tradition to determine their skills, but rather to price. So they would cost you no monarch points and, if you can afford the price of the most skilled, be extremely powerful. Of course at the same time they would be a double edged sword since if they gain too much power or if you fail to appease them, they could turn on you (through events).
This would be representative of the Condottieri in Italy who would often backstab the employer or mercenary leaders such as Albrecht von Wallenstein who gained too much power and prestige thus had to be removed.
Also it would be nice if it were possible to hire foreign regiments to fight for you, these would be under the form of ready made army templates that you can raise in your lands and perhaps keep loyal/ deny others the chance to hire them by paying a certain amount of gold every month during periods in which the regiment is not needed. Some examples would be the papal guards, the Swiss guard in France and the Venitian schiavoni.
Also, we should be able to recruit natives in colonies as less powerful mercenaries to represent locals hired by the colonizing empire.
What do you guys think?
