Hello everyone, I thought it would be interesting to expand the role of mercenaries in EUIV, after all, mercenaries had quite a prominent role for most of the time frame covered by the game and this does not seem to be properly represented.

My suggestion is to add the option of hiring mercenary generals that cost gold rather than monarch points and perhaps some events linked to ones prestige and legitimacy and the general's culture that could lead to that general either abandoning you with some of the mercenary units or giving the enemy an option to buy him out. To make it worth using them, they should not be tied to army tradition to determine their skills, but rather to price. So they would cost you no monarch points and, if you can afford the price of the most skilled, be extremely powerful. Of course at the same time they would be a double edged sword since if they gain too much power or if you fail to appease them, they could turn on you (through events).

This would be representative of the Condottieri in Italy who would often backstab the employer or mercenary leaders such as Albrecht von Wallenstein who gained too much power and prestige thus had to be removed.

Also it would be nice if it were possible to hire foreign regiments to fight for you, these would be under the form of ready made army templates that you can raise in your lands and perhaps keep loyal/ deny others the chance to hire them by paying a certain amount of gold every month during periods in which the regiment is not needed. Some examples would be the papal guards, the Swiss guard in France and the Venitian schiavoni.

Also, we should be able to recruit natives in colonies as less powerful mercenaries to represent locals hired by the colonizing empire.

What do you guys think?

That sounds like a great idea. Also, you could tie the "buying out mercs" option with the Espionage group, so it works a bit like the rebel funding, just that you can bribe the mercs once and they decide if they'll turn on their paymasters, with every merc regiment AND every enemy regiment that is in the same province as mercs affecting the cost (they want more gold if they have to fight a big army when "turning their cloaks").

I hadn't thought of that, surely it would help to improve the espionage group,it is pretty useless compared to the others at the moment. Anyways yeah, new ideas and national ideas regarding mercenaries would be needed.

Perhaps the way mercenaries are recruited could be changed too, it could be tied to development, having high development would give you less available mercenaries but more skilled ones, it would make sense since as nations got more centralized and better organised the need for mercenaries decreased. It would also make sense to tie mercenary troops to regions having it affect their loyalty and price, maybe you could even get bonuses from recruiting mercenaries from the same region over time. They could even add some sort of mercenary tradition, the devs could really go in any direction with this, plus a lot of unique events could be added to the Italian and German states.

I think mercs should be most plentiful at game start, but decrease in numbers as new units are unlocked. I couldn't think of an easy way to make one single regiment more "skilled", though. The game just doesn't seem to offer this.

This would be a very interesting mechanic! And I agree that it could also lead to a spiced up espionage idea which is a great thing. Maybe also implement a mercenary loyalty bar that could be modified by events and actions of the players and ai. Only risk i see is in multiplayer where the merc buying out between rich nations would probably become a shitshow especially since the game really lacks a good money sink.
