Actually, assassinations didn't give casus belli before the 1.2 patch, , but killing or imprisoning the assassin did (so, in your example Carthage wouldn't get a CB against you for sending the assassin, but you would get a casus belli on the them because they executed him.

A lot of people (including myself) asked for this to change, and it has changed.

This should not happen, they're the injured party, I should not get the CB.

They also got a CB against me for me trying to assassinate them.

You always got a CB if they executed your assassin. Before 1.2 Carthage wouldn't have got a CB on you.

I'd go so far as to say that the majority of players are hoping their assassins are caught and imprisoned or executed because they want the CB rather than the assassination.

I misunderstood the modified CB process.

What is the justification of getting a CB for having one's assassin executed?

It seems rather unjust for a country to benefit from such a underhanded act.

It also seems somewhat gamey to send in gormless assassins in the hope that they're caught and executed so you can go to war without the stability hit.

Well, a "propaganda" minister could claim:

"A noble member of our nobility has been imprisoned/executed by our enemies for a crime he hasn't commited. This means WAR"

After the 1.2 patch, you can no longer engage in any "illegal" activities for 2 years after the last time you tried and succeded. This is not limited to the country you sent the last agent, but includes all other countries.

Therefore, now you can use this trick only once in 2 years... definitely less gamey

Somewhat. But in a game lasting how many hundred years(3 odd?) it's still a bit much in my opinion. After all, with the way the game works, once you have a CB on them, you can pretty much guarantee they'll give you an excuse to declare war later when they break tribute. And if not, send in the assassins.

I do think it's an area that needs working on. Assassinating someone to earn a CB should not be the modus operandi when looking for an excuse to go to war.

I agree that the mechanic is rather cheap, but there's currently no way for many countries to go to war without taking a fairly permanent hit to stability. As Selucid, I think I need 1300g to go from +0 to +1 at this point in my game, so I pretty much am stalled out unless I use an assassin to start a war, otherwise I am just rolling in rebels.

There is no cross-marriage to get a claim on a throne that way, and I've had maybe one event in 50 years that allowed me to get a CB on someone, luckily it was Egypt.

The game's pretty dull if you are just sitting there FF'ing through decades waiting for a CB, watching births and deaths and watching 1-territory countries pull ahead of you on tech, if you take CB away from assassins there's not much to do in the game, imo.

I'd be in favor of taking away assassin CB's if there were more random events or diplomatic paths to CB's.

All these fundamental problems make me wonder two things:

1. How the game made it off the pre-coding design process with such fundmental flaws?

2. How it made it through the beta phase with such fundamental flaws?

My guess to 1. is hubris, and 2. Poor selection of beta testers.

Well if the CB for getting your assassin killed is still there obviously its because they want it in the game for some obscure reason.
