It happen to to my count of Aargau. No events, no actions, just one day the message log displays that my ruler got the trait. Just to check, I fired the event for indulgences, lost the trait. Then the next day I gain it back again. Sorry if this should be in the bug forum, but what is the problem?

Does one of your rivals happen to be the Papal Controller? ;)

Or is the Papal Controller a ruler nearby ?

If that is the case then you are excommunicated because your piety was low enough for the PC to excommunicate you. And an AI PC will excommunicate anyone that he can.

Its not a bug, when you are PC you can also excommunicate rulers who have done nothing wrong :)

On a related note, Veld. Is it true that you can only excommunicate those in the same tier as you?

I tried excommunicating the German King, but it didn't allow me to. It did allow me to excommunicate fellow Dukes.

AFAIK, the excommunication is about how much prestige the Pope has. It is easier to excommunicate counts and dukes than kings since they require less Papal prestige than excommunicating kings.

For example, the duchess of Tuscany, Matilda of Canossa, Papal Controller at beginning of 1066 scenario, should be able to excommunicate the Emperor of HRE if the Pope has enough prestige to do so. Historically this happened and the emperor was forced to negotiate with Matilda and the Pope.

Correct, it depends on the prestige of the Pope and the piety of the 'target'.

How do you get back into the church after being excommunicated? I had an event that made me become excommunicated and now my entire kingdom is losing loyalty fast!

As Veld said, excommunication depends on the poor sod's piety and the pope's prestige. The only christian you can't excommunicate is, well, the Pope himself. Okay this may seem obvious, but you never quite know what's possible in CK. Anyway I thought it was worth the try...

There is an event that revokes the excommunication. Make sure you have at least positive piety and behave like a good boy and sooner or later this event will fire. Though it will cost you a lot of gold.
