Excommunicated with no Papal State

So in my current Italy game, after taking Rome, the Papal State moved up north to Utrecht. Later on Holland took Utrecht, and since Italy was present, the Papal State did not reform. Now, several years later, I find myself excommunicated. I am really confused as to how this happened or what I could have done to prevent it. Since the papal state wasnt a country, I couldnt keep an eye on my relations with them, and so I don't know what to do now. Is there any way I can prevent this in the future under these circumstances? Right now my income is through the roof, so this won't result in a loss by any means, but it's getting really irritating to watch my prestige plummet.

The Cardinals still exist even without a Papal State, and there'll still be a Papal controller, so you'll have to watch your relations with that country.

If you have a high Papal Influence, or be Defender of the Faith, you can't be excommunicated.
