Ok, things were going all slowly but smoothly when some jackoff had me excommunicated... questions...

1) Do I have any recourse?
2) Do I get any causis belli on the guy who requested it?
3) Are there any specific reasons he would request it? Like an event? or is this just a plot in general?

I recently had a series of events related to an earthquake where I eventually had them refill the crack with stones... Was that the cause?

Seems like getting excommunicated is pretty much a nail in the coffin sort of event...

As long as the Pope likes the requester enough, and doesn't like you too much, and there's enough piety sloshing around in the request letter to make it all happen, you can be excommunicated for any reason or no reason. (You can also, incidentally, request excommunication on others for any reason or no reason.) To lift it, make sure the Pope likes you and you have enough piety, and there's an option in the Diplomacy window for the Pope to lift your excommunication.

1. Yes. You can buy an "Admission of Repentance" or whatever for a hefty fee. It removes your excommunication and makes you immune to being excommunicated again for a few years.

2. Nope!

3. He probably didn't like you. Anyone can ask the Pope to excommunicate -anyone,- at any time -- provided that they have good relations with the Pope and that their target has poor relations with the Pope.

4. Nah. That event is just for funsies.

Excommunication is really only 'bad' if you're an enormous kingdom/empire and your vassals already hate your guts. Otherwise it's a pretty easy fix.

Also, the above is assuming that you're Catholic. If you're Orthodox, just send your respective patriarch a gift and ask him to lift your excommunication via the diplomacy menu.

1 - nope.
2 - nope but any Catholics who aren't excommunicated get a free casus belli on you until you get it lifted.
3 - see 2. Also the negative opinion you get from all Catholics including your vassals (-30 IIRC) and the negative to your diplomacy stat may also figure into his reasons.

I doubt that event had anything to do with it. The leader who had you excommunicated probably just wants to attack you or cause you problems. I've had excommunication requested by people who are already at war with me using their de jure casus belli (currently playing as King of Scotland which means I have some counties in England & the King of England has tried to take them back 3 times so far & at least 2 of those wars he had me excommunicated by the time I'd wiped his troop stacks out and begun sieging a few of his counties in retaliation).

Getting excommunicated isn't that big a problem I find. 2 super easy ways to get it lifted.
1 - go to the Intrigue dialog and scroll to the bottom of the list where you can go on a hunt & invite people to your court where you should be able to send a begging letter to the pope to ask him to lift it. He'll want some gold in return (300-500 I've seen but could be higher or lower depending on your standing/empire size etc and the value it indicates isn't always what is asked for when the pope responds).
2 - if there's a crusade active which you haven't joined, join it. You don't even need to send any troops, just joining the crusade removes the negative opinion from "not crusading" (-15 IIRC) and replaces it with a "Crusading" opinion of +25. It also makes the pope happier with you & you can then just ask him to lift the excommunication from your own diplomacy page. You can also send a token force to the crusade to get some participation which will make the pope even more happier with you if this isn't enough.

If the pope has a high opinion of you to start with, it's harder for people to ask for you to be excommunicated (alternatively play as non-Catholic rulers or breed your heir to be non-Catholic).

Am I the only one who thinks the Pope should be more reluctant to indiscriminately excommunicate whoever he wants. Say if you want to excommunicate someone, the Pope should consider his rank and his army size before he makes a decision. I mean, if the Pope excommunicated the Emperor of HRE simply because he's playing favorites, there should be trouble.

25 piety for a couple hundred gold at the higher levels isn't worth the payoff. I suggest a hunt. There's a few piety events in there. Also much cheaper.

Does seem a little arbitrary.

What can you do for a quick little piety boost??

Giving a bishopric to the Papacy works rather well.

If youre a bigshot with prestige to spare, you can also create an Antipope who'll re-communicate you without beating an eyelash. I always like doing that when I get excommunicated, for the RP alone.

"You're no longer welcome in my Churches".
"Oh yeah? Well fuck you, you're no longer my Pope. Bob is the Pope now."

I agree that the pope shouldn't be so trigger happy about signing excommunication bills. I think the rank of the person requesting the excommunication should be more important in the decision.

At the same time though, excommunications should stick longer. Declarations of repentance are too easy. I can't tell you how many times I've manipulated an excommunication only to have my excommunication war called off as soon I have boots on the ground.

At the same
