I noticed that border friction seems a bit wonky on occasion. For example, one empire I share a single hyperlane conection with has an opinion penalty of -53. Granted, they're Hegemonic imperialists, but that still seems like a lot, especially when the hostile hive mind I share 4 hyperlanes with has the exact same value of -53.

Weirder still, they seem to be stuck in a weird cycle of opening their borders, then immediately closing them again, which prompted me to check the border friction.

Either the current formula for border friction is rather arcane (and needs to be simplified and made more transparent), or there is some bugginess going on.

edit: I'm on version 2.2.4

edit 2: While the borders are closed, border friction drops to -38. Still seems way too much, but I guess this explains the cycle of opening and closing the borders. Still a strange design choice if this intentional.

Border friction (and anything diplomacy in general) has always been off, and followed generic rules.

I'm hoping that the long rumored diplomacy update adjusts accordingly. Building a heavily militarized starbase on the border with a large fleet docked should have a big negative impact, where as building a trade hub with hyper-lane bonuses should be a big positive impact as well as trade increase (empire dependent of course).
