Exact mechanics behind equipment capture

How do they work? I remember capturing only equipment i destroyed during battle, while destroying encircled troops dont yield any. I suppose you cant capture anything without maintenance companies, and you need only one in a battle. Is there way to gain large amounts of equipment from encirclements and other stuff?

Capitulate the enemy while their troops are in the field. Don't destroy encircled enemy troops. Keep as many enemy troops alive as possible.
