  1. A portal to hell is opened.
  2. Unexplained objects appear (2001, Hydrogen Sonata, Star Trek IV) that begin to destroy all life.
  3. A borg culture, star trek type race (probably been said)

Research into psionics and psionic life accidentally goes too far, creating a psionic virus.
* Being non-corporeal, the virus (or germ, or worm) can transmit across vacuum. Ship crews can therefore carry and transmit the disease. Allowing the presence of infected ships in your systems is not recommended.
* Default solution is "kill it before it can infect you" and "purge the infected".
* Robots are immune. AI research and extensive use of robotics is therefore a good idea to fight this threat.
* Materialists may be especially susceptible because of their disbelief in non-material things, as they typically do think the thought "I must not allow demons to influence me" and therefore have not practiced their "psionic immune system".

Such a psionic virus could potentially be used to explain a "zombie apocalypse", or the creation of an "Overmind" that seeks galactic domination.

I'm curious as to how often the developers of a game like Stellaris gets inspiration from the community. The ideas presented here are, for the most part, superb. I especially like the idea of a psionic virus/overmind as well as the gray goo scenario. What a creative community!

I'm sure they get a lot of inspiration, it's just that many of these ideas we as the community have may be contradictory to what the developers want for the game. Either that or one of our ideas may make other game features redundant, or they conflict with other game mechanics or scope. But if you watch the streams they talk about ideas brought up by the community all the time which is awesome.

Invasion from paralel universe, where humans suffered devastating invasion on Earth and became ultra-agressive xenocidal species who ravaged their own universe and now are attacking another timeline. The hardest part of this scenario would be coded special events for playable humans (if they are the human controlled) who can either subdue to them or defend the rest of the galaxy ;)
Another variation is the same scenario, but with expy of player's race -it is attack of the [player's race] from parallel universe with special events giving player option to subdue to them or fight against them.

How about lategame POLITICAL crisis?

Just imagine some chain of events that would cause galactic empires to split into two fractions (similar to 30 years war in EU4) with no other possibility but to start war for mutual annihilation. Unfortunatelly we cannot purge pops on occupied planets (we really can't, can we?) but the very idea of pangalactic massacre sounds so lovely for me...
The reason could be any - question of ideology, issues about some tech or problems around psyonics with non-psyonic empires willing to destroy psyonic ones claiming them to be unnatural. After all we ourselves are the greatest threat to us.

So, what do you think?
