I'm almost an old man (38) and I find the game much more intuitive than EU3. I don't understand it all yet but I will. It's not "dumbed down" just more intuitive. There is a difference. And since the forums like to measure thier manhood by how long they have been playing games, I've been playing since Mattel Classic Football. Beat that!

Already 30 hours playtime with this demo-version! Guess I like games designed for the masses :) Honestly: I am quite sure it's the best paradox-release so far. Anyone remembering the disastrous condition of EU3, when it came on the market a couple of years ago? By comparison this game has got a very bright future!

Compared to HoI3... I pity the newbies here. :p

Back in the old days, most people would find it cool to have a Sultanate of Bohemia terrorizing their CK games. :D

Dwarf fortress.. *Shudder*

If you think Paradox games are the most complicated set of games in existence, you know nothing yet.

What he should say is that Paradox games are the most complicated games in existence that are somewhat USER FRIENDLY. Man, most complex games are just a combat spreadsheet and completely suck to play. Those stay on my hard drive about 10 minutes.

I should like to point out that as Venice I got my ass kicked in by the Ottomans, after I already annexed and cored all of Naples. This never happened to me in EU3. This was with Hungary and Bohemia on my side of the fight as well, and with the new peace mechanic I had to really hurt myself to get peace (I couldn't give away a bunch of useless Hungarian land or whatever and call it that, I had to release nations and give up real territory). I fucking love the new ai, and I think eu4 will be the best paradox game yet. Yeah, there could probably be a bit more eternal turmoil and politics, and such, maybe make changing cultures, and cultures a bit harder, but that will be done in mods as it always is with paradox games.

tl;dr this game is amazing.

Try to get an alliance with Austira as it makes the Ottomans less likely to attack you. Keep one diplomat boosting relations in Constantinople. Do not expand into Ragusta as it agro's them, instead expand into Urbino/Naples for more trade power, doing this I managed to survive a whole game without going to war with them.

ya EU series is comparatively less complex than say CK or Victoria series in some ways.

I'm just glad i wont have to have the headache of vassal management in EU4.

I can play CKII but that's only because I watched about 30 hours of extensive tutorial on it. Without that there was no way it would have been possible.

I suspect that I'll probably never really manage to work out how to play this game aside from stumbling along doing the most basic actions. The sheer number of modifiers that are modifying other number which in turn determine certain factors is pretty incomprehensible.

The whole technology thing doesn't make much sense to me, that is to say I haven't really seen any of it in action in a way that let's me understand how it works. ALl I know is that you can buy stuff with your points. It looks better than the little I played of EU3 and those horrible sliders that made no sense to me at all. By the looks of it though and the pace it moves at I doubt I'll survive long enough without getting attacked in an impossible war to actually see it in action.

I still don't really understand how the game can really work if you can just attack anyone you feel like. As far as I'm concerned, unless you are one of a small number of countries you are on borrowed time until the AI decides to attack you, and then it's automatic gameover as it marches 200K troops in to fight your 50k. The necessity of a CB in crusader kings in my opinion is one of the most important factors in that game actually being playable.

Will after playing the demo for a a day now it looks like the game was made for the mass market, I should not be shocked I guess every growing game company will head in this direction giving time :(

For the modders out their I hope you can turn this into something Challenging and not lets see if I can form Italy 20 years after start date or conquer the world in 100 years, will just have to wait and see and hope :)

I don't think that the game is being geared towards a mass market, but I do agree that it is too easy most of the time. However that's nothing new with EUIV, and with such things as the coalition mechanic it should actually (hopefully) be harder than EUIII.

Are these games really that complicated? It only ever takes me a few hours to get used to them, but I might just be better at these kind of video games than most.

Depends on the game and the person. I can see how, to someone with minimal knowledge of how feudal systems work, CKII could be daunting. 30 hours of tutorials though? I just played through the in-game tutorial (stupid bugged military mission) and plopped myself into the game and learned the hard way.

Vicky II, however, I've played for entire playthroughs and there's still some intricacies I'm still trying to grasp. It makes CKII look like the original Mario in terms of a learning curve. *grumbles* I fucking hate coal...

I still don't really understand how the game can really work if you can just attack anyone you feel like.
Just because you can attack anyone you feel like, doesn't mean you should. There are real and immediate penalties for declaring war without a casus belli, most prominent being the two-point Stability penalty (bearing in mind that Stability runs on a scale from +3 to -3).

From what I saw in the demo, I'm pleased to say that nothing has been dumbed down at all. It's been made more accessible and prettier than its predecessor, and I do like that, but it sure has not been dumbed down in any way. Europa Universalis is still an intelligent game for intelligent and mature gamers who are into maps, numbers and details. This time we get the good looks too.

It's going to be a great game supplying me with hundreds of hours. I look forward to the entire experience.

I really hope this game goes to mass market. I mean how great would it be for the Grand Strategy genre to really explode in popularity. CA might start thinking about making their TW games a bit more complex, other publishers might start thinking of new concepts, more games like EU/CK would be coming out & to top it all off Paradox will get the big fat pay loot they deserve - continue to grow, expand and make even better games.

Because you see mass market does not equal dumb flashy easy sh**. That is just what people say to feel intellectually smarter than the majority of games/movie goes/etc. EUIV looks to be more complex & interesting. I actually can not WAIT till I build my first nice empire just pulling ahead of the competition getting to that break point where I run away from everyone else to get embroiled in a tough war just about winning & my monarch dies to be replaced by a 1/1/1 so I spend the next 30 or so years desperately trying to keep my empire alive from the vultures.

Another example is the pathetic music logic. "Your songs were awesome before you went mainstream" somehow more people liking the same band as you means that band now sucks.

The most significant overhaul in the whole game is the new trade system. And it really feels dumbed down with all that steering and new trade routes opening. It used to be so much better when we were sending hundreds of merchants into centers of trade, while waiting if the dice will roll positive result... :p

After playing the demo and all the previous EUs extensively, I can most certainly state that I will be loving EU4.

I actually think it's difficult to gauge how hard this game truly is in the limited time frame that we've played thus far. The affect of your decisions with your admin/diplo/military points is something that will not truly show up through only 28 years of gameplay. It's going the personalize nations more than ever before and cause me to play far longer games than I used to.

Now, if only I could speed up time to the full release on Tuesday...

Will just keep my opinion to myself from now on looks like even the forum are overrun by mass market teens who think this game is not getting dumbed down.
Well, let's see:

1) Has the number of the beast in their user name - check

2) Implied insult to everyone over 19 by claiming they are a teen - check (please note, I have 2 teen kids and one well over that age)

3) Makes a major criticism of the game with no examples - check

Adds up the check points - worst troll post in the last hour or so.

Beat that!
Not much of a challenge sorry :)
