Hungary didn't become united with Austria until after the Ottomans had conquered most of it. For a long time the Habsburg 'Kingdom of Hungary' was mostly just modern Slovakia. Then the Habsburgs had to conquer the rest off the Ottomans.

Wipe them out? Maybe if you grow larger or smaller enough where you aren't a valid rival anymore? Usually once the AI rivals you it's for the entire game.
Meh that kinda sucks. Still think rivalling the AI rivals and raising relations should have at least a chance of making them cancel it. Anything that is not dynamic is stupid.
Anyway I think I got overall lucky in my game, Bavaria became the second emperor and just survived a war versus Poland (they DOWed me). Diplovassalized Urbino and vassalized Wallachia.
Venice got 2 milanese provinces and all of Ferrara, and is now the happy target of a coalition war led by me
It´s them and Austria versus me, France, Siena, Tuscany, Genoa, Savoy and Switzerland, so maybe we can handle them. It does worry me that vassal nation AI is annoying nad often doesn´t do what you want them to do. Year is 1462.

Yes, but the game's mechanics strictly prevent that, considering it takes 200(!) diplo points just to unrival someone.
Maybe decrease that by event, diplomatic reputation or royal marriage?
Well, the war ended and I became the happy owner of two croatian provinces and reparations. For people wanting a difficult nation I´d suggest Hungary. Poland and Muscowy are way easier. Will probably have to choose Aristocracy or Quantity for more manpower.

Which makes sense, they were, after all, a lot more successful in this time frame? Hungary is actually a pretty decent start as a player, if you've gathered a bit of experience. Regarding the rival mechanic: the only way is to do a few restarts, since at least Austria certainly does not rival you all the time. Once they do, however, it's pretty difficult to get rid of it.
Btw., as far as I know there's been a gold province added to the Balkans, possibly Kosovo? Might be worth it to grab that one.
Well Serbia usually annexes Bosnia if left alone, from what I´ve noticed. Don´t know if you can do a full annexation in that case.
Also Hungary starts with Regency, that lasts for almost a decade, screwing you a lot.

Here we go again.
For the avid Hungary player:
1. Improve relations with all the minors around you to prepare "Enforce peace".
2. Guarantee as many minors around you as possible.
3. These should draw you into some conflicts during the regency.
In parallel:
1. Improve relations with France.
2. Improve relations with Burgundy.
2. Try to ally them at the same time - send the offer on the same day.
Continuing:
4. Once you're out of regency eat Bosnia, Serbia, Ragusa, Wallachia, Dalmatia from Venice.
5. Improve relations with the Northern Power Than Won (NPTW): Denmark or Sweden.
6. Improve relations with Muscovy.
7. Make another great power ally to replace Burgundy (which at this point is either France-inherited or France-food).
8. You're big enough to kick ass on your own at this point and have 2 big, scary allies that will never hate you since their interests do not conflict with yours.
For ideas:
Quantity and Economic are quite good for your poor lands. I'd take another military idea group, probably Offensive or Aristocracy to make my awesome Eastern cavalry punch hard. Defensive can be quite hilarious on your low-supply limit lands when coupled with Scorched Earth. This actually is a pretty strong advantage since Hungary has quite a few provinces and you can run them around to destroy their manpower.
Other than that, take whatever you want
For Paradox:
1. Make Hungary and Poland historical friends (if you do this I'd highly recommend taking lucky status away from Poland).
2. Give the Ottomans a mission to conquer Hungary and another one to vassalize Transylvania.
By the way, the colors in the region are appalling, most of them. Wallachia, Romania, Hungary, Serbia can all be described as various nuances of s***-brown. Moldavia is puke green, not much better either. I'd actually play Hungary since I like its national ideas, but painting the map in that color is... disgusting. Bosnia, Ragusa and Albania are the prettiest ones in the region, but I'd really love to see an Augsburg green somewhere in the region (no one else has something similar).

Agreed. This is most of why I don't really enjoy playing in this area - most of the colors are just bad. Area could use a proper green, and perhaps some sort of purple or blue.
