Ever wonder why we have a 6 Mechbay Leopard, but can only drop 4 Mechs into Battle?

Maybe the two converted ones are not true 'Mech bays - for example you may have to lie them on their backs to fit in. They might just be storage with enough room to work on the 'Mechs.

You start the game with just the Leopard as your base and you have 5 mechs (4 start and 1 spare) so you'll need room for a salvage before Argo comes into the scene probably a few missions into the story campaign.

1. Lack of pilots.
2. Because HBS said so.
3. Surprise Argo expansion adding two more mechs for missions ala XCOM

Of the three, I’ll go with number 2:p

Because you might accidentally drop 5 mechs and be a filthy clanner. ;)

I always found it a bit funny how for all the talk of clan honor they still have to have that one extra 'Mech over those darn "dishonorable" IS Freeborns.

Don't they usually field two stars of five against an IS company of twelve though? It's been a long time since MW2, so I don't remember how all that works.

I think the reason is a)the 4-mech lance is the basic unit of the BT universe and b) the other two bays are converted from Aerospace use, so they are more for storage than for deployment. There's probably no ramp down if they were designed for fighters to fly in and out for one thing.

Ah my bad, I always think on the really low scale level (as in lances and stars) since most of my Battletech experience is with the Mechwarrior series.

Once the fighter cradles are dismantled the two fighter bays can be converted into 300 tons of storage space. This space could hold 6 small vehicles, or 2 mech bays. It is noted in tro 3057 that their is limited access to this space thus its unsuitable for transporting military vehicles. But one could certainly store a mech in each bay and work on them just be difficult to deploy them from such bays.

...so that, prior to getting the Argo, you can have up to two mechs being worked on while you drop with the other 4.
This is the answer right here. You will take battle damage and you will have to repair. You might also want to refit a 'Mech, and not be tied down without income for the month-or-so it takes.

It also provides the reason why you can only use a single lance in a given operation.

"Skippy! Any luck finding a used Overlord on Craig's List?"
