Just wanted to find out how many people out there actually went and created the KoJ. What were the reasons for doing so? Did it endure?

I personally never but am planning to. What do I have to expect?

Yes. I was bored as England whilst waiting for QftNW, so I decided to launch a Last Crusade and take Jerusalem. I succeeded in this and then expanded to control the rest of the levant, whilst simultaneously coverting the region to Catholicism. Then I released KoJ, and sold them the rest of the Levant. They did quite well and got into many wars with Jalayirids, Najd, Hedjaz etc.

It's rough to play as. You basically have to get really lucky, and take a few Greek provinces right when you unpause the game. If you can, take Morea from Byzantium once they get involved in a war with their neighbors.

(I changed my game to have KOJ there at the start as a Catholic Theocracy)

I was playing a game as the Teutonic Order once and got the reconquer Jerusalem mission, so I did. I wanted them but discovered I couldn't so I gifted the province to Cyprus, switched over to them, released it. I was disappointed to see it had the Cypriot nationality so I quit and went back to my save from before getting rid of the province. Eventually it formed the beginning of Teutonic, and later Prussian, Asia.

I did it as England. But the idiots allied with the Papal State and we ended up on opposite sides of a war when my other allies attacked the Pope. Without me backing them, the ungrateful snots got annexed a few years later... by Siena.

I release them frequently when I play Italians or Spaniards - Syria is a nice place to have an ally if you're Venice or Naples. When you release them, just bribe them to 200 and offer vassalization, they will accept eventually, then sell them extra lands - when they convert and core they become a strong ally on your side positioned right in the middle of the Muslim world flanking whatever rival might arise there. I find them very useful in this regard - and they have serious cool factor when they are on the map (almost like Ulm).

I got very lucky with my game. Played as Castille in order to take/release Jerusalem. The Mamluks GUARANTEED me of all things! I took Cyprus, Crete & Sicily to expand easily. The Mamluks lost a big war and I used that chance to split them in half via Sinai. Took Alexandria and a few Asian possessions - worked my way down the Meccan side of Arabia (the wealthy provinces). At this point I was getting into trouble with European nations and ended up excommunicated - I decided to go Protestant to avoid the inevitable European invasions.

In short - once you get the better of the Mamluks you should have it easy. The smaller Arab states will collapse easily enough. Find an ally or vassal (Georgia/Ethiopia?) and the rest should be easy enough. Good luck!

Well done, sir. Oh - and you can just bribe the Pope to 100+ to avoid excommunications or even better vassalize him (many consider this an exploit) so he becomes hostile to your enemies and they end up on the wrong side of the excomm stick.

I tried it once with 5.0 + DAO but kept on getting DOW'd by the Mamlukes before I got any opportunities. Bonus shenanigans: wrong culture OPM, no useful allies, can only expand if you're willing to invest in a navy.

Anyone have some tips to try out?

Anyone played as Jerusalem?

I've just taken back the holy land and was thinking of trying them out. I couldn't find any strategy guides for them so obviously this is the best place to ask. Has anyone here played as them and been successful? If so, how? They seem pretty screwed to me.

Yes, you have to win back Judea and then convert them to Catholicism. Once you do you can release them as an independent state.
