Are there any events that any of you out there would LOVE to see incorporated into HoI for the sake of "flavor"? If so, what are they & what causes would they have?

An event that I'd really like to see incorporated would be "The Great Escape" from Stalag Luft III by Allied pilots. I can't remember dates exactly (I haven't read Brickhill's book in years), but it could have the effect of very temporarily reducing stability in Germany, or possibly slightly delaying production on an item currently being made, or anything at all in game context to reflect that the Germans would have to allocate some manpower/resources to hunt down the escaped POW's (it's hard to be TOO specific on effects until we see exactly how the game mechanics will work).;)

Although these events bring a little flavor to games, I hope, if they are incorporated, that they can be turned off. It is quite irritating to have these events alter a good strategy...well may be that's just the point of it...

I'm a big fan of A3R (though I haven't played WiF or WiE, so I might like those games more or less, too, if I had experience with them), and one of the things I really like about A3R is the ability to pick random variant chits, if not using the research rules. There's no set number, though the designer recommends no more than 5 per side. In my view, having events like 'Hitler Assasinated' or 'Italian General Strike' or 'Germany Adopts Plan Z' or 'Germany Develops Early Jets' serve to add some spice and to put that little kernal of fear in the back of players' minds.

There's almost too many for me to pick one or two without sitting down and doing some serious thinking :) I think I'd like to see a set number of possible random events that would be chosen from a large list, one list for the Allies, one for the Axis, where the player could choose how many events he'd like to have in a game.

Ever seen "Computer War in Europe"? Old SPI game, whole ETO at divisional scale, faithfully ported to PC with the addition of "Fog of War" rules. Fantastic game, easy to play except for the sheer scale of it.

Wow. Interesting events for Germany would have to include the von Schulenberg Coup. Imagine if Hitler WERE killed...

Now we can find out for real.

Some more I can think of would be better French preparation (armour instead of Maginot), France extending the Maginot line all the way to the sea, better German prep for winter, the A-Bomb, better prep for the Battle of the Atlantic (for both sides), Iraqi revels, Wafdist partisan uprising in Egypt, to name a few.

And did I read correctly that War In Europe has/was computerized??? I suppose it would be too much to hope for that the thing still exists?

Sounds like some of the variants in the Original Third Reich...

Actually, I think that the reason the Maginot line wasn't extended to the sea was a political one, as Belgium wasn't an enemy country and building the Maginot there implied that they would be "abandoned" in case of war against Germany. Not nice PR...

I like the idea of using the events to keep the game tending toward historical events, but like in EU, allowing a 15% chance of a non-historical outcome. For example, during the Battle of Britan there could be an event where the Germans "accidentally" bomb civilian areas. This would happen 85% of the time. If it happens, the British player can bomb German civilian areas with no effect on internal "dissent" levels. If, on the other hand, the ahistorical choice of no accidental bombing happens, the British would suffer a large increase in "internal dissent" if it choose to target German civilian areas because such bombings would not be "justified" in the minds of the British populace.

It was partly political, but also partly practical. The northeastern border region with Belgium is flatter and wetter than further south, and less suited to sophisticated fortification. It's an open question how effective the Maginot Line would have been in this area.

Thanks much for the url! And yeah, those were blatantly lifted from 3R/A3R :) The details might not be compatible, but I always did like the possibilities those events inspired.

I think that France didnt expand maginot line becuse they thought to move all allied forces to Belgium and defend from Belgium, even attack germany from there.
Wrong decison based on belif that French army were the strongest army in the world at that time.

As for events I do not want historical events that lock a country into a certain path. I would like small random events; a jump in technology, untimely deaths of goverment leaders or generals/admirals, temporary increase in production or resources, decrease in the same, etc. Things that could help or be detrimental to your plans but not necessarily game changing.
