The Popular Elections in Genoa
shield_GEN.gif

Alex_pharaoh said:
Since there are 2 parties, there will be obviously 2 choices. And so, there will be 2 stones, one red and the other white. The white stone will represent the Guelphs, and the red stone will represent the Ghibelines. Each man or woman (OOC: men are the ones who normally have the property, so he is a citizen, while the property of the woman is normally the property of the man. However, unmaried or widow women have their own property, so they shall be citizens of Genoa and therefor they shall have the right to vote) who is a citizen of the Republic of Genoa will enter a small room, after waiting in a queue, called the Stanza di Elezione, or election room, take a stone from one of the two sacks which contain the different colored stones, and put in inside a large woden box called the Scheda Elettorale. To avoid people puting more then one stone, the Scheda Elettorale had an opening which when a stone was put inside the opening, a little bell would sound, and thus tere would be only one bell sounding. Of cource, the opening was only big enougth for one stone to enter, thus avoiding completely the possiblity of a simultanious doubble voting. After that, the permit for the election is marked as used by the official guards of the elections, who would put their choice at the end of the long day, and he goes home without the posibility to elect one more time.

So, when I went outside, I saw the people in a large advancing queue that ended in the door of the Stanza di Elezione. I then became proud of myself, for this is my doing, I managed to create a true Republic, representative of the people of the Republic of Genoa. and most important of all, that the nobles that made their choice would stand in the same queue as the common people, as citizens of the Republic of Genoa. This was an inmence breakthrough. And as Florence became the center of the artistic and cultural renaissance, Genova had become the center of the political Renaissance of the Republican values.

It actually happened… somehow certain Genovese pulled it through, so called popular elections. Many around the world did already despise these “republics” but this was an outrage! These election broke all rules that even Genoan cherished, giving the power from nobles and patricians to lowlifes, women and peasants. How will the classes that are in power to react to that?

TABLE:

1. Somehow the situation calms down, it lacks the spark to blow, besides all those lowlifes are so happy with their new privileges that supports doge with almost religious zeal. (no effect)

2. Many old senators, merchants and clergy voice their opinions aloud. However they do nothing to back their words... at least for now. (-1 Morale for half a year/2 turns)

3 Many old senators, merchants and clergy voice their opinions aloud. Some minor unrest in the “New“ Republic is quelled... at least for now. (-1 Morale for 4 turns)

4 Not only do nobles, merchants and clergy voice their displeasure aloud but openly oppose the new ideas by refusing to obey them. (-1 Morale and (-1 Tech for 1 year/4 turns)

5. Hell this is a damn bad idea! Genoan high classes are really
angered, moderate unrest.
(minor rebellion triggered)

6. Rebellion! We’ll never agree to such madness and blasphemy! Never shall we be equal to Jews, lowlifes and… (women) (major rebellion event.)

War Weariness Attrition

  • ”Those who use the military skillfully do not raise troops twice and do not provide food three times.”

    ~ Sun Tzu
Time becomes an ever-present factor to be reckoned with the moment a Prince raises an army to do battle. Men are co-oerced into doing war by the promise of riches, ransoms, rape and reward. Every minute that passes by is a minute that a soldier spends wondering whether he shall see any one of these.

Unless the initiative is seized by the Prince, it is instead taken up by doubt, fear and bodily disease and malnutrition, which, ever patient, always win the ultimate battle.

With little doubt Hungarians and Bohemians were victorious in their war against Venice so far. Their vicroy is so grand that many feudal leavies wonder why do they still stuck with their lords for so long? Is not Venice demolished and humiliated? Did we not pillaged it of all riches? More and more feudal knights leave their landlords. They are now much more interested in reaping the rewards of their fighting instead of risking their lives yet again.

Furthermore there are problems with supplies for such a grand army, especially after mindlessly destroying the Venetian possessions.

Many nobles also wonder about what is going to happen with their eternal souls after Ugo’s excommunication.

Last but not least the mercenaries demand their payments and its dry Royal coffers at incredible speed.

Venetian and Aragon’s forces face similar yet so different problems. Doge and Constantine’s armies are massive, and massive armies requires supplies and regular payments, especially Venetians have problems with that since their merchant Empire collapsed like a house made from playing cards. Their armies also occupy rather poor and depopulated areas.

Many of Aragon’s nobles also wonder why the hell they follow that mad Greek who just recently sold half of Carlos’ inheritance to hands of certain Queen.

The armies of German electorate are also affected and face various problems.

Only a month passed since the king of Poland opend his court again and already he found himself in a war he has little interest in and knowledge of. Increased payments

For some, war is a disaster. For others, it is way of life.
The mercenaries belong to the last group. Whether they call themself conditierri, mercenaries, Swiss helbadiers, English archers, and whether they band in compagnies of hundreds of men, or in small groups of a cannon and crew, their conditions are the same. When war breaks out, they arrive, offering their service to highest bidder.

As more and more nations join the war which started in the Balkans, and now has spread to Italia, rulers find that the supply of mercenaries and weapons for own conscripted armies are not endless. Fewer and fewer mercenary bands appear, and those that do demand higher wages.
Even rulers without any knowledge of finances start to understand the laws of supply and demand, if only by having them explaining by smiling mercenary captains.

As mercenaries are drawn to the conflict from near and far, areas far from the conflict are afflicted by the sudden shortage of men willing to sell their lifes.

Realms affected: All!
RESULT:
Untill further notice, all new land.mil. purchases cost 2 eco pr. LM. Sea. mil. is unaffected!
This last at least untill the end of the current wars.

Famine in Piemonte.

Whenever armies pass through an area, it is the peasants who suffer first. Villages are either plundered or forced to provide provisions for the soldiers, depending on the colours of the flag flown by the army in question. Even men serving the lord of the land often resort to stealing supplies instead of offering even token payment.
These problems are off course aggravated by the size of the armies, and as nations from most of Southern Europe send knights, mercenaries and levied peasants to fight in the countryside around Piemonte, food quickly runs dry.
Villagers flee with their animals and few belongings, soldiers burn the fields they cannot harvest to deny them to the enemy, and cows wander loose, some dying to provide food for soldiers, others getting lost in the woods.

Desperate commanders make desperate attempts to feed their armies, but sooner or later, they all fail. Men die from hunger, diseases run wild in the crowded encampments, and many of those surviving desert rather than face the same fate as their unlucky comrades. Death in battle only claims few men, compared to the other causes of mortality.

MODIFIERS:
Event triggered by sheer number of forces in Piemonte. All nations with troops in Piemonte affected.
+1 to Piemontes roll for fighting in own country.

TABLE:1. Catastrophic lack of supplies!
The situation is desperate, and are made worse when soldiers turn on the horses used to draw the few supplywagons, butchering them for a few pounds of meat. Thousands die, some in their sleep, some on the march, falling prey to diseases and hunger. Even more desert and flee for home.
(-50% current land mil (rounded up), -2 morale, -1 tech for 2 turns)

2. Harsh lack of supplies
Knights find their horses butchered for meat, and every eatable is plundered from the local areas. But even desperate measures only help few of the men, and the survivors are dishearted.
(-25% current land mil (rounded up), -2 morale for 2 turns)

3. Moderate lack of supplies
Pillaging of villages and stealing from allied armies supplies prevents the worst consequences, but morale suffers from the harsh rationing of available food.
(-1 current land mil, -2 morale for 2 turns)

4. Lack of supplies
Even though men die of starvation, the survivors accept it as one of the dangers of war.
(-1 current land mil, -1 morale for 2 turns)

5-6 Succesfull scavenging.
Carefull planning and ruthless looting pay off, as the commanders of the army manage to find just enough supplies to keep their men in fighting order.

Long way from home.
shield_MOL.gif
shield_sie.gif

As distances to home grow, so does supply lines, and as supply lines grow, the amount of food, replacement soldiers, new weapons etc. falls. And when supplies are lacking, morale suffers.
Furthermore, it can be hard for the soldier to understand the need to fight in foreign nations. One thing is to defend the homeland, or to sally out and attack neighbours. But to march through half of Europe, only to die on some foreign field, can be hard to see any reasoning in.

TRIGGER: Distance from home territories to provinces fought in.

TABLE:

TABLE:1. Disatrous morale!
Men sing the sad songs of their homeland, and tell tales of their wifes and loved ones around the campfires. They dream of home, and many do more than just dream. Soldiers desert in thousands, marching back the way they came.
(-50% current land mil (rounded up), -2 morale, -1 tech for 2 turns)

2. Morale suffers
Men who once dreamed about honour and glory now dream of hearing familiar languages spoken, and for many, the temptation to return home is simply to strong. Weapons and other equipment are left behind, as large part of the army desert.

3. Bad morale.

The Rise of the Pirate Lords of the
Mediterranean.

dz_1813.gif
(Berber Pirate Flag circa
1800s)

As the Caliphates and Almohids passed away, and centralized governance in the world of Islam began to deteriorate, the Rise of the Berber Pirate Lords began and would continue to rise and exert power as token vassals of the Maghrib Kingdoms that provided them with secret and safe harbors to operate from, until the latter half of the 1800s when American expediditions and the Napoleonic Wars rooted out their hideouts.

In 1445, a series of wars began in Christian Europe, notably around a core of realms known as the Minoan Confederation. From outside the confederation, and outside the realms of their enemies, a great sum of
loan monies were acquired for the funding of these wars; vast sums, of the likes not seen since the heyday of the Roman empire were transported. The supply routes of Aragonian and Venetians were stretched as the city of Venice and almost all Venetial possession fell to the invaders.

The Pirates posing as various Christian States began to loot the merchantmen, and cut inland to ravage the vast supplies of realms' treasuries that were being hauled around.

Somewhere in the Mediterranean

"Avast me hearties!"

"What? You've been in the grog again havn't ye..."

"SHUT UP and board! Boarding party away!"

"For Aragon! For the Pope! HOORAY! Or sumthin...."

A ship filled with swarthy men, scarred, and many with blood stained scimitars leapt onto the floundering merchantman. Weighed down with gold, and with a hole in its prow, it had no chance of escaping the clutches of the seasoned pirates of the Maghrib coast. The ship flew a motley assortment of flags including a Papal one, and a Venetian one whose stitching was coming undone as it flapped in the breeze.

The pirates boarded with ruthless abandoned, fueled by their lust for wealth and the generous portion they would recieve as dictated by their letter of marque.

"Hey!? Where's the ducats?!"

"By Satan's beard... this Italian feller says they're not even carrying any loan payments. Curses... well, very sorry sir. I suppose we will have to let you on your way, no hard feelings now. Just tryin' to make a livin'."

"COME ON! We can at least take their goods and their ship, right?"

"No, no Ahmed... I mean, Giuseppe... we're after gold, we don't want to fill our hull with... ug! Cotton! Bleh! Let's go... Well, maybe a few of the women! Ho ho! A pirate's life for me!"

Troops from Bremen, Gelre and Pommern are told to head south. Miles and miles to the south in fact. And why? So they can die in defence of an allready dead man and an annexed duchy. Even the nobles that lead the army doubt the plunder will equal the efforts worth. Low morale among the troops and leaders alike, who have no desire to march to Southern Europe to die, cause unrest in the ranks of thier armies.

Peace in the East
shield_psk.gif

The war between Lithuania and Pskov lasted many long years during which both realms were depleted of resources to continue with it. Feudal levies long to return to their homes and families, ground is barren and burnt many times.

Liths are now much more interested in their internal affairs than fighting with their neighbours, they leave the cold Russian lands without claiming it for their own. Slowly, with time both realms will recover for the long anticipated peace returned to their lands.

RESULT:

Lithuania and Pskov return to peace, no land is exchanged and repatriations paid.

Death of the Pope.
shield_PAP.gif

It was a wonderfull summer day in the fair city of Rome. Even though war raged throughout the sorrunding nations, the Papal states had managed to keep out of trouble, and the common citizens faced no great dangers.

Through this peacefull city, a carriage speeded. It displayed the Papal seal, and beside the driver rode a member of the Swiss Guard. Heading for one iof the great cathedrals of the Holy City, it was obvious it contained His Holiness Innocent IX. Apperantly, the Holy Father had overslept, and was now very close to being late for the mass. Angry shouts from within spurred the driver to greater speed, and as he navigated the streets of Rome, citizens were forced to jump for their lifes.

Later investigations would conclude that is was simply an unfortunate accident. A street urchin had stolen an apple from a marketstall, and was now running from the angry owner, to enjoy his illgotten fruit in peace. The Papal carriage, dirving at reckless speed, approached a corner, just as the poor boy, the name of which was never discovered, decided to make a sudden turn.
In the last second before the inevitable, the driver noticed the frightened boy, and made a desperate attempt to save the poor soul. A sudden tug at the reins, however, merely confused the horses, and as one turned, the other continued straight ahead.
A loud crash, the pityfull sounds of a horse in pain, and the carriage was broken. The Swiss Guardsman was thrown clear of the wreck, and survived with a broken leg. The driver had his neck snapped by an unfortunate landing, but the men who rushed to the scene cared little for these two commoners. No sound was heard from within, and as the wheels stopped spinning madly, and the door was opened, it became clear that His Holiness Innocent IX, Vicar of Christ, was dead. His late sleeping habits and a common thief had conspired to rob the Catholic World of its leader.

Pope Innocent IX is dead!

The Passage through Wallachia
shield_WAL.gif

Venetians managed to escape the pocket in Dobrudja by paying a dear sum in gold to the Wallachian landlord. However, Wallachia as for now is the vassal of Hungary and that decision was not looked kindly upon. Voivode of Wallachia stalled the Hungarian officials as long as he could but finally he was forced to change his decision even if it would mean the war with Venetians. Fortunately he heard that their armies are paid in now and decreasing with each passing day.

Wallachia revokes the Right of Passage to Venice.

The War of the Roses continues
rose-whiterose.gif

Edmund rode at the head of his war-host. His head still swam with the timeless, intricate formalities of his coronation, only a few days hence. Even though the move to displace the Lancastrian child King John had taken months of careful planning, it all seemed to have happened so quickly.

John had been shrewd beyond his years, and had surrounded himself with advisors who were as wise and brave as they were loyal. The Lancastrian claim to the throne looked to be immovable; the Yorkist's fate as the losers in the saga equally set. But in the past few months, despite his strength, John had grown reticent in his dealings with the world* and, politically, Windsor Castle had fallen silent. The more brave of the Yorkist magnates had seized the opportunity and soon English nobles, churchmen and Privy Councillers alike either had their palms greased with gold, or knifes pressed to their backs with muttered threats in shadowy, forgotten corridors. The means of persuasion were subtly chosen according to the weakness of each man.

The structure of John's government had collapsed like a house of cards with its main supports taken away. John's lineage, and thus his claim to the throne, had been called into question, and John had been imprisoned in the Tower of London whilst these were investigated. Edmund, the first and undoubtably legitimate son of Edward, Duke of York himself, had been the obvious choice to front the Yorkist cause when the family decided to press the advantage. The Duke himself was too old and troubled by injury to take the crown himself.

It would have been foolish, though, of Edmund to think that all England would fall into step behind him without a fuss. He, and those who had supported him, had not made that mistake. Lancastrian sympathisers, whatever their reason, be it their oaths to John or their prosperity under his reign, had gathered forces all over England and were preparing to march on London to dispose the Yorkist pretender.

Edmund, the sound of his destrier's heavy hooves echoing from the low farm walls on each side of the road north, was not prepared to sit and wait for them.

Hungary has won their war. Piemonte is conquered, duke Antonio is dead, but the victory came with a prize. Not only did Ugo die, but the moneys to hire the mercenaries thet enabled the victory had to be sought outside the realm. Left is an endebted country, and the prize of war, the lands of Piemonte, brings more trouble than gains, as the Holy Roman Emperor and his allies finally move to avenge duke Antonion, the man they tried to save.
In this hour of need, Emerek, Ugos heir, turns to his friends, and find them willing to discuss the debt that burdens the nation.

King Louis de Berri of Lotharingia, looking to improve his status, offers a simple solution. He will sign away some of the debt, money that will prove difficult to cash in anyway, and in return stand as the man saving Piemontes independence.
With the stroke of a pen, a debt is erased, and the temporary ownership of Piemonte, a nation whose fate is still debated, changes hand.
However, the debt thus erased lacks in the Lotharingian treasury, and it will take some time for the proud kingdom to regain them through taxation.

RESULT:
Burgundy gets -1 eco for 1 year.
The debt of Hungary to Burgundy is decreased to 2 eco.

Fate of Genoa
shield_GEN.gif

It has been hard times for Genoa. As the period under Andrea Doria was forced to an end by outside forces, and as new rulers rose to power, new forms of goverment was introduced. Peasants and burghers, even a few women, had a say in the governing of the republic, as the doge was no longer appointed, but elected. The idea was radical, and the brave experiment was bound to fail.
The population never really understood what was expected of them, and rather than winning the hearts of people born and raised in the carefree society of feudalism, allthough in another form than in Northern Europe, the new rule alienated the nobility, and the favour enjoyed among the merchant class, crippled as it was by hard terms forced on the republic by the defeaters of Doria, could not carry the ideal of democracy through.
With the Genovese army destroyed in Piemonte, Genoa could not resist as Lotharingian forces moved in to end the expirement before the dangerous ideas spread. In the eastern possesion of Kerch, the Ottoman sultan seized to opportunity to end christian rule of the moslem lands once and for all, and without seriours resistance, all Genovese possesions fell to invasions by various armies within very short time.

RESULT:
Burgundy spends 1 eco to simulate war efforts.
Ottoman Empire spends 1 eco to simulate war efforts.
Liguria (province) controlled by Burgundy.
Kerch (province) controlled by Ottoman Empire.

Genoa is not yet formally annexed, but through cooperation, Burgundy and the Ottoman Empire is in a position to do so, just as if the Genovese provinces had been conquered in war.

Naples breaks vassalage
shield_ARG.gif

The self-proclaimed king of Naples, although obviously recognized by many and with support of other Houses has just recently decided to cut all ties of vassalage that were binding him with the Kingdom of Aragon.

Although the chains and ties of vassaldom were not the strongest ones still there are many loyalists among Neapolitanian nobility, especially among those who benefited from the rulership of the vice-Roy.

Some nobles of Naples feel justified in distancing themselves from the state of Aragon, some resist it. What will happen? Only God can tell.

1. Nobles loyal to their former overlord react violently, and set about taking their vengeance to their errant leader at sword-point! (-2 morale, -2 tech to Naples for 2 years/8 turns. Ianhu Hunadra's Happy March of Terror
shield_REB.gif

The army of Transylvania under Voivode Ianhu Hunadra, fiercely loyal to King Ladislav in Ianhu's own eccentric way is marching home to destroy a rebellion against the Voivode being conducted by Transylvanian Saxons. However to insure that his army much starved and diminished after the costly - maybe disasterous Italian campaign in Piemonte, Ianhu takes it upon himself to extract the horrible cost of maintaining his army from the 'ignorant and barbarous peasantry'. Even if that peasantry is that of his allies. Of course, Ianhu would be no less gleeful and optomistic if during their "provision gathering", raping, looting and pillaging his army of wraiths takes a good sum of wealth and slaves for himself. After all, ultimately it is to help the allied cause against his sworn enemy in Venice. And so with boyish delight the Transylvanian Voivode makes his terrible presence known to the local populace all during his march homeward..."

Expenditure: Transylvania will be paying 1 landmil to trigger the event. This to represent the amount of men dying on the journey, stragglers that simply disappear with the loot and so on. The one landmil gained with the highest roll that is mentioned below would be to represent that many of these men are not in fact lost as the army is sufficiently and contently supplied from its raiding, not to mention new “volunteers”.

TABLE:

1. Ianhu's men are taking a heavy tool upon the lads they are passing by, their army covers quite a wide corridor. Many youngsters join their army as replacements. Loot is huge. (+1 current LM and +1 current eco to Transylvania, -1 morale to Bohemia and Hungary for 3 turns)

2. Ianhu's men are taking a considerable tool upon the lads they are passing by, their army covers quite a wide corridor. Many youngsters join their army as replacements. The loot is nice but not as big to make any difference for the Transylvanian treasury. (+1 current LM to Transylvania, -1 morale to Bohemia and Hungary for 2 turns)

3. Many youngsters join Inahu’s men as replacements. The passing army wreak havoc but fortunately not so big as one might expected. (+1 current LM to Transylvania)

4. Inahu’s men do not achieve any considerable successes on their way back home, local Militia successfully protects larger towns and villages. (no effect)

5. The march turns into disaster, many men are disappearing and the loot is poor. Low provisions turning the army into a band of marauders. (-1 morale to Transylvania for 2 turns)

RESULT:

2 + 0 = 2

War Weariness in Homelands

Much time passed and much sand run through hourglass. War between the Dual Monarchy and Ventian-Aragonian alliance went through many breaking points yet not a single one of them gave the other side enough strength to prevail. Nobility, clergy, burgers and peasantry are tired of this war and dangers that it brought to their lands and purses.

Many feudal leavies wonder why do they still stuck with their lords for so long? More and more feudal knights leave their landlords. They are now much more interested in reaping the rewards of their fighting instead of risking their lives again and again.

Many Hungarian nobles also wonder about what is going to happen with their eternal souls after Ugo’s excommunication.

Many of Aragon’s nobles also wonder why the hell they follow the mad Greek who just recently sold half of Carlos’ inheritance to hands of certain Queen.

Their French counterparts mumrmur against king Louis who left the kingdom defenceless and honoured his word to Venetian merchants.

Venice and is crushed and noble and rich families start to question the politicks of their doge.

Bohemia is only in a slightly better position since their lands were not directly threatened and King Ladislav is benefactor of all this mess (not counting the mess with the Emperor) since he achieved the throne of Hungary.

Pflatzan nobles question the reason of entering and blindly following the steps of Ladislav and Ugo in the first place.

Transylvanian nobles feel they fulfilled their role as allies more then necessary.

Only Moldavians warlords still feel a bit justified for they achieved Dobrudja, at least for now.

How this all going to end many wonders? Some more ambitious or inclined to rebellion already start setting up plots to dethrone their Monarchs.

REALMS EFFECTED:

Hungary (heavy)
Bohemia (moderate)
Venice (heavy)
Aragon (heavy)
France (heavy)
Pfaltz (heavy)
Transylvania (heavy)
Moldavia (to lesser extent)

The Bloodied Knife
shield_BAY.gif

Albrecht the Third of his name, Duke of Bavaria, Prince of Empire, honorable soldier, von Wittelsbach, approaches the throne. In one smooth, swift motion he tears into the thick, soiled cloak and pulls a dagger from a hidden pocket.

"Shall I die for you, cousin?"

In another swift motion, red blossoms from the Duke’s chest. The wool soaked in much of the liquid, forming a bloody crimson cross on white. Falling to his knees several yards before the throne of Peter, simple Albrecht stared intently into the eyes that represented so much of the pain inflicted upon his tortured mind.

"Is it thus that all Judases must find their redemption before the world?"

The room began spinning around; the dagger was a distant clatter as it bounced on the floor. Crying for everything he had ever done, the pious knight collapsed into a pitiful heap as darkness claimed his vision.

TABLE:

1.Despite the fast reactions of, among others, Cardinal Corleone and several Swiss guardsmen on guard, the wounds inclicted are to grave. Duke Albrect dies later tha evening, and an entire duchy is left without leader, and fearing for their previous dukes immortal soul
(Albrect III of Bavaria is dead, -2 morale to Bavaria for half a year/2 turns)

2.Though healers work hard throughout the night, and priests pray, the selfinflicted wounds are just to deep. It is later said that even as Albrect was carried away, he was dead.
The duchy of Bavaria is left wondering why their duke would commit suicide, and fear for their future.
(Albrect III of Bavaria is dead, -1 morale to Bavaria for for half a year/2 turns)

3
The wounds are deep, and even though moans can be heard as the duke is hurried away, proving that he was at least alive as he was carried out, the Bavarian duke dies of his wounds during the night. (no effect) (Albrect III of Bavaria is dead)

4
Pure luck saves the duke. Even though the knife cuts deep wounds in both chest and stomach, it does miss important organs. After three days, healers declare the duke save, allthough he is recommended to keep to bed for at least an additional week.
Back in Bavaria, the nobility wonder what could have caused such an desperate act, and as news reach them that the duke survives, they fear that a madman shall rule them for years to come.
(Albrect III of Bavaria survives., -1 morale to Bavaria for for half a year/2 turns
)

5-6.
Tiredness saves the dukes life. His long wait have weakened his arm, and the dagger does not penetrate his ribs to cause any real damage. Within a few days, the duke can stand and walk again, ready to answer for his actions. (Albrect III of Bavaria survives.)
