Aleppo Rebellion

aleppo.jpg

It has been months, some say years since Aleppo, the Mediterranean outpost of the Timurid Empire has been in rebel hands. Finally, at long last have the Mongols begun marching towards their Syrian citadel, but the fortress is in other hands and they move quickly to cement their victory.

1. Aleppo declares independence! Subjects loose faith in Khan’s ability to rule and the rich port no longer generates revenue (-1 morale for 1 year, -2 starting eco for 2 years to Timurid Empire. Aleppo becomes a nation).

2. Aleppo becomes independent vassal! Subjects loose faith in Khan’s ability to rule (-1 morale for 1 year to Timurid Empire. Aleppo becomes a vassal to Timurid Empire).

3. Aleppo join the Ottoman Empire! The province is culturally far more attached to the Ottoman Empire to the north and as such raises the banner of Osman, Timurid subjects despise their ruler (-2 morale for 1 year to Timurid Empire. Province Aleppo becomes Ottoman).

4. Aleppo join the Ottoman Empire! The province is culturally far more attached to the Ottoman Empire to the north and as such raises the banner of Osman, Timurid subjects despise their ruler (-1 morale for 1 year to Timurid Empire. Province Aleppo becomes Ottoman).

5. The rebels continue to resist, but there are too many and not united enough to agree on any further actions (no effect).

6. Rebellion ends! The rebels lay down their weapons as they hear of the approach of Khan’s wrath. (Aleppo no longer in rebellion).

Portuguese Naval Reform
shield_POR.gif

After a decade of solid exploration, Portuguese shipbuilding was beginning to come into its own. In order to handle the vast distances involved and to withstand the punishment of the coastal waters of the Atlantic, the captains and naval architects of Portugal began experimenting with revolutionary forms of ship design. From this work was born the caravel, which emerged in its earlier forms in the early 1440’s to take the lead in Portugal’s exploration of Africa’s coastline.

In addition, the caravel represented a major innovation in naval warfare, as ships with superior sailing could outmaneuver the older, oar-driven types. To take advantage of this, Prince Enrique, known by many as ‘The Navigator’, began ordering the construction of ships for many purposes – exploration, customs duties, trade/fishing, and of course the navy. Portuguese expertise would help their navy go a long way towards becoming a dominant force in Europe and its surrounding waters.

Code of Rights
shield_uzb.gif

Plurality and tolerance in the Uzbek Khanate was always available. However, after the so called "crisis of the dozen Khans", the power of the nobles and the aristocracy achieved dramatic proportions. Peasant rights were mostly abolished, and the society became explicitly hierarchic and unjust. That is why Alxud Khan decided to modernize the society, and the creation of these laws seemed what the Uzbek Khanate needed. And so, the Code of Rights of the Non-noble classes was created, and by the order of the Khan, are to be followed.
However, with such drastic ruling as "All citizens of the Uzbek Khanate are equal in front of the law," resistance from the traditional ruling classes were only to be expected, and one could not help wonder if the Khan had pushed his reforms to far.

MODIFIERS:
Uzbekh Khanate spends 2 eco, 1 to trigger, 1 to get +1 on the roll.

1.
Such drastic changes are to much for the ruling classes. Dissastified nobles take matters in their own hands, and rise up agains the Khan. (Minor rebellion triggered)

4.
The khan does not have the authority to carry out such major changes. (no effect)

5.

Macedonian independence.
shield_gre.gif

Doge Francesco Foscari of Venice rules a realm spread thin along the coast of the Mediterrenean. Harbours along the coast of Italia and on the Greek peninsula are home to the naval power of the serene republic.
But even then, distance can prove a problem. The governors and goverment officials of the more remore corners of the trading empire, such as Crete, Macedonia and Dobrudja often have to take decissions on the fly, without time to wait for confirmation from the official seat of goverment. Add to this the religious differences between the catholic Italians and the orthodox population in many of the provinces, and the Doges decissions to grant extended rights of self-governing to some of the more remote provinces seems a wise choice. Whether or not this will trigger similar hopes in othr provinces have yet to be shown.
In Macedonia, at least, both local nobility and population are happy with their newfound status as vassal state.

The nation of Macedonia is created:

Because of your total ignorance of the ways of Islam, you shall be destroyed. Thus wrote Borrak Khan of the Khazaks in a letter to his Sunni brethen in the Uzbekh Horde, and with these words, he plunged the two Sunni-Islamic nations into a war.
Scholars and Imans in the Islamic world hears of these events, and the most common response is wonder.
For what crime did Alxud Khan commit, that displays total ignorance of the ways of Islam?
His only crime was to issue a declaration that granted peasants the same right as nobles. It was a strange thing to do, but hardly against the teachings of the Qu'ran. And to use it as justification of a war against fellow believers is indeed a crime against the words of the Prophet.

TABLE:

1.
Scholars and Imans preach this, and the lower nobility hears them. The population rises in anger against a ruler who abuses the Qu'ran for personal gain.(Minor rebellion triggered)

The fate of Hellas

King Constantine I, looking for ways to expand his realm, turns his eyes towards the east. And here, he finds the Ottoman ruler Candarli Halil Pasha, fighting wars against internal revolters and external enemies, desperately lacking money. A sale of the province of Hellas is arranged.

TABLE:

1.
Filled with a desire to join their brethen in Macedonia, creating a Greek state, rather than joining a king far away, the population of Hellas revolts. Aragonese nobles fail to see the wisdom in spending so much money on a rebellious province. And in the Ottoman Empire, the nobility reacts with dusgust when learning that land is being sold of. (Hellas revolts, -2 morale to Aragon for 1 year/4 turns, -1 morale to Ottoman Empire for 1 year/4 turns)

3.
The idea seemed sound, and neither Aragonese nor Ottoman nobles object against it. Neither does the lucky pirates who find that the ship they've just plundered contained a large part of the payment. (Only 1 eco reaches the Ottoman Empire. Aragon still looses 3 eco.)

4.
Rumours of the huge gold load have lured pirates and other scum to the seas. Despite the best efforts of the Aragonese navy, some of the gold is stolen. (Only 2 eco reaches the Ottoman Empire. Aragon still looses 3 eco.)

The sale goes exactly as planned, and soon the Aragonese flag flies over Hellas, while the Ottomans have new money to fund their wars.

Dobrudja Moslems
shield_VEN.gif

The Vizier of Theological Affairs paced back and forth in her
austere quarters in Tlemcen

Aaminah Jamila al Umm-Hakim was upset. Ever since
that day in court when the Venetian ambassador had spoke almost proudly
of oppressing Muslims in Drobudja... she felt chilled in her soul.
While she knew the Zayyanid Caliphate had already done great work in
the east, by taking Thrace, and that work now needed to be done in
Al-Andalus... she felt a deep sorrow over the plight of the Drobudjans.
She remembered her own youth... a constant fear of the Christian
barbarians that had killed her parents in their quest to purge
Al-Andalus of Muslims... and then the burning of her library before she
fled to Algeria. She knew somthing had to be done.

*She sat down at her desk and in very deliberate strokes of her hand
she wrote out her case of aid and charity for the Sultan to read.. and
then she scratched out the top few lines*

Why write to just the Sultan... of course Aaminah
had the most influence with him... but perhaps the Islamic world at
large was unaware...

*She began to write again, this time a dissertation addressed to all
the Children of Allah*

When she finished after three days of perfecting
the language, she took the parchment to the Sultan's private Chambers,
and drew aside the curtain unannounced. Sitting upon his bed, she
placed a hand upon his brow, and his eyes opened immediately to find
Aaminah staring at him.

"My Sultan, my habibi,... we cannot allow little girls to live in
fear when we have the strength to prevent it..."

Pius II dies.
shield_PAP.gif

Chief Secretary Pablo Dominio of his Holiness Pope Pius II had seen many persons entering and exiting the papal chambers. Many of them had appeared much younger, beautyfull and female than should be expected. Pablo knew when to close his eyes, and after all, his own position had granted him some company on long, lonely nights as well.

Surely, life under Pius II had been good. Noone said so loud, but bribery had become the name of the game, of in his position, finding time for Holiness to meet ambassadors and men of the Church, he had known to benefit from it.
But a sense of dread told the Chief Secretary that all was about to change, soon.

It started when yet another girl emerged from the papal chambers. However, this one was crying and seemed to have dressed in a hurry, and her first words immediatly told Pablo that something was very very wrong.
"It's not my fault. I didn't do anything. I swear by God, please don't let me fall into the hands of the Inqusition!"
Normally, a young crying girl begging for his help was a good thing for Pablo Dominio, but not when the girl proceded by telling him that His Holiness, the Vicar of Christ, Pope Pius II, had died in her arms, seemingly from a poor heart.

Pablo Dominio had acted as efficient as he was known to. Despite the girls pleas that she was not to blame, she had to go. It could not be made public knowledge that the Pope was not alone when his poor heart surrendered.
A few guardsmen understood the situation when they had it explained to them, and a few days later a body was found floating in the river.

The next thing to do was to discover the poor Pope. A servant was told that His Holiness wished for breakfeast to be served the next morning, and soon a frightened kitchen boy found the Pope dead.
The honour of the Church had been saved, and now the only remaining task was to ensure that the Holy Mother Church was not without leadership. From the corners of Europe, cardinals was summoned to Rome, there to elect a new Vicar of Christ.

Pope Pius II is dead!

Reclaiming the East
shield_psk.gif

ne hundred years ago before now in 1443, Veliky Novgorod stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Ural Mountains. Alone her and her sister Republic of Pskov of all Russian states remained free of the Mongol yoke. Together not only did they remain free from the Mongols and prosper as members of the famous Hanseactic League but destroyed countless invasions of the Livonian Order and the Swedes. Still with time and the countless wear of enemies on all sides even the greatest fall. Pskov split away in 1348 and a number of costly wars humbled the great Russian Republic. Her inner politics were becoming more and more poisoned with greed yet she struggled on...

Slowly her eastern colonies were more and more neglected, with less demand for their goods from her own weakening mercantile power they were becoming much too expensive to support. Great Lord Novgorod was slowly dying - as always there was a great thrashing about in the end. Wars in the early 15th century once more with the Mongols and then she was torn asunder, the greatest city in Russia found herself in darkness. However there was one last chance, her sister was still alive and strong - she came back for her terminally wounded sibling. It was clear neither could any longer stand without the other, and they were united once more.

This new Union Republic found herself in a new Russia, a new world. There were enemies on all sides, wanting to finish what history had already begun. However the Union Republic struggled on, re-asserting her position in the new Russia - in the new world. On sunny winter days Veliky Novgorod once more shone brightly in the sun, proudly, the city had found the light once more. The two sisters now once more alive, vibrant, powerful looked to reclaim the glories of the past. The long neglected eastern colonies would be found again, re-settled if need be, they were once more needed to fill the volume of goods demanded from their trading partners. In this will of the woman who so epitomized the Union Republic these three travellers now stood on the edge of a great frontier, to explore a vast, untamed land. To make contact once more with the scattered settlements of the past, to shine the blazing light of knowlege once more upon the great unknown. Following them would no doubt be the legions of free settlers, entrepenuers, trappers, lumberjacks..."

... Excerpt from "To Meet Once More the Face of the Forgotten"

The first step in reclaiming the eastern colonies would be taken in the basin of the Dvina river. The Dvina river being the major natural boundary between Pskov-Novgorod and the "east". The step would be two colonial fortresses, one at the delta of the Dvina on the White Sea to be named Arkhangl'sk. The other would be further down the river where she splits to be named Zavidgrad after the man contracted with her construction.

This step would not only of course solidfy Pskov-Novgorod's presence with bases for the frontier guard and garrisons but also give a foothold and safe haven for all manner of adventurers, explorers, and trappers making their way into the frontier. Both fortresses on the river also insured communication, tranport capacity and safe crossing points. This move would go far to effecitvely open the Dvina basin region for settlement around the fortresses and for great exploitation of resources. Resources which most importantly include furs and timber in limitless supplies, the two largest exports of the Union Republic. One of the more important aspects of the contracts used to hire workers to build the fortresses is the granting of land in the region promoting further settlement and resource gathering...

Portuguese Naval Reform EVENT

Portugal's naval program of expansion and development continued unabated in the years after its initiation. In addition to a major program of construction of advanced ship types, Portugal also moved to secure favorable trade treaties for vital stocks of timber and other naval supplies, searching as far as cold Pskov in the north, and coming to the terms with the Hanseatic League. At Sagres, Prince Enrique, 'the Navigator' brought together the sharpest minds in naval science, ensuring the long-term success of Portugal's program of exploration. Pytalovo

Golytin's finger traced an almost diamond shap across the map of Eastern Europe, stopping momentarily at places along the way, "Veliky Luki, Smolensk, Kiev, Minsk..." He put a particular emphasis on Veliky Luki, "These are to be the centers and major gathering points of the rebellion. Together they completely disrupt the east-west axis of the Lithuanian state and constitute the majority of the Russian population - which in itself is in far the majority in Lithuania. They also represent the greatest share of that state's food production capablility - the Lithuanian heartland and Vollynia being hardly more than woodland and swamp.

The first stage of the rebellion would require that the Russian forces immediately move to cut off whatever supplies are heading eastward for the Lithuanian/Moscovite armies, as well as to confiscate everything they get their hands on. In fell swoop depriving the Lithuanian army, and equipping the rebel forces with whatever we cannot smuggle them beforehand. Until regional, local leaders begin to emerge, servitors of Pskov-Novgorod shall take on the brunt of the command obligations."

He paused and circled with his finger around one of the cities, "As this first action is being taken, the rebellion will no doubt spread from its focal point to the point where the rebel forces will be large enough to sack and destroy whatever loyal garrisons remain in place - which by this point will have been under seige for some time. Of course we can expect higher capitulation rates among those areas where much of the garrison is made of Russians which is safe to assume in many areas simply considering the demographics. Regardless, Lithuania has spent everything she has in sending her army eastward, nothing more than skeleton garrisons can be expected."

The third and final phase that we can plan from this point is the formation of more centralized efforts by the various regional Princes that could very well culminate in a move on the Lithuanian army, or Vilnius itself to secure their independance. That is assuming that the Lithuanian army remains in any form having been cut off for some time now from its supply and under constant harrassment and threat of attack from Egytpian and Mongolian forces."

Mikhail stopped and leaned up against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest again, he kept his eyes on Azim, "What we hope to accomplish in the end is the liberation of our brethren in Lithuania. Veliky Lukie to be integrated once more in to the Pskov Republic itself, the formation of a Principality of Minsk which shall act under the protection and guidance of Pskov-Novgorod being in such a vital place on the new Russian-Lithuanian border, and independant Principalities in both Smolensk and Kiev that shall recognize the Prince of Pskov-Novgorod as their ultimate sovereign, even if they act almost entirely autnomously. Naturally the most support should be given to local leaders within the rebellion who support such ideas as well." Golytsin puased and shifted against the wall, his eyes glancing over to the desk and the portfolio given to him by Azim, , "So tell me your thoughts..."

"I think... I think we cannot yet count out Crimea from amassing some strike against the Liths. One of my major concerns is that with all of the armies traipsing over the steppe... they, and your own force, may eventually cross paths with the freedom fighters." Azim briefly looked at Mikhail before going on. "It would be wise of us, to coordinate an understanding and system of recognition so that our true furor is spent on the Liths and not on those with common purpose. Perhaps if you were to suggest a name for the movement, to both unite your imprisoned Orthodox bretheren, and to identify themselves when confronted with other units..."

Azim stepped back from the map and turned to face Mikhail's imposing figure. "The Czarina provided me with some information regarding the the massacre at Vassylkiv... this is a most sensitive event, is it not? Perhaps if the name were to be drawn from Vassylkiv?" Azim mangled the name of the city horribly, and he knew it, for as Alladin translated it, he did no better. "Forgive my accent." He turned back to the map.

"We have contacts with Orthodox dissidents both through Thrace, and through our merchants in Crimea. I am glad to see that some of our notes on contacts overlap... we will bring in a significant sum of coinage through our supplies sold in Crimea. We are now one of the few nations with wide access to European goods that supplies Crimes at a prefered rate, so we have able means at this time. Here, here, and here we have already crossed into the Lith lands regularly, as led by our contacts." Azim poked the map in the indicated spots. "As you said earlier, with the Lith armies away this is not a major obstacle in any case."

Azim again stepped back, and stretched his arms outwards to relieve the tension in his back. "Tell me Commander, you asked me earlier about your Czarina and my view. You, however, did not share with me your view or what the appropriate answer would have been!" Azim produced a smile, and waved his mug. "Is there more of this?"

It is common knowledge that Pskov-Novgorod agitators send money and aid to thier Orthodox bretherin in the poorly ruled Lithuania. How could a ruler opress the majority and force them to go against thier beliefs for so long? The extended war inflames matters further and the fact that all the best warriors are elswhere leads to trouble.

Will it become obvious where the rest of the finances come from though? The ocational deserter returns home and spreads furhter discontent. Along with Orthodox priests quietly preaching disent the Government stand little chance in some regions. Minsk (Belarus), Smolensk (Kiev), Veliky Luki (Welikia) and Kiev (Ukraina) are hotbeds of revolutionary thoughts.

Romagna had fallen to Venetian troops and was regained by the papacy. They had fought bravely for the Pope and their lands. MODIFIERS: (-1 (Favourable) for interesting RP)

This interference in the war, far off in Lithuania and combined with the Sultans cooperation with the heathens. The waste of money by supporting an orthodox revolt causes imense unrest and when nobles discover that much of the money didn't even arrive it is all to much.

The quality of Venetian artisans sent to Bavaria

medreath.jpg

The quality of Venetian artisans sent to Bavaria is beginning to become apparent. Several months after their arrival it is readily apparent that the Venetians have sent only one type of thier fine workers, but which is it?

1. product is marketable (Excellent)
2. product is marketable (Very good)
3. product is marketable (acceptable for supposedly fine)
4. product is marketable (average street work)
5. product is not very marketable (Poor workmanship)
6. product is totaly unmarketable (Terrible workmanship. They must be having a laugh)

A 3 is rolled

The Venetian artisans sent to Bavaria produce an acceptable "fine" piece of work. Nothing too special but nothing that is poor.

Resources Spent: None - Possible loss of the province...

Objective: To randomly decide which faction in the end takes control of the city.

( noted modifiers from above event - Journey of Sergius) = (N/A)

1) Kiev Burns! Pro-Lithuanian factions finally wrest control of the city and in return for less strict religious policies and amnesty in the city and its environs (the province) will disband the rebel garrison. The city and province are badly damaged from the fighting.

Piemonte and the renaissance of Torino

my_picture.JPG

MODIFIERS: 3 econ points (1 trigger, 2 modifiy) (+1 good RP)

After the Great Fire of Torino in 1444, the Duke of Piedmonte, upon realising the backwardness of his capital, ordered the massive reconstruction of the city. This included not only the complete rebuilding of the area devastated by the fire, but also the renovation of the other parts, making Torino practically an artificially planned city. The promise of the rather high wages attracted many architects from Germany and Italy, but most notably from Lotharingia: eventually, the city of Torino later became known as 'Little Dijon' throughout Italy, because of its resemblance to the Burgundian capital; the style of many of the new palazzos imitated the style favoured by Philippe le Bon. Nonetheless, the influence of the Italian renaissance was also clearly visible. Duke Antonio also expelled the dyers from his city: they were settled down some five miles away from Turin in the town called "Torino Cittanuovo". This decision of the Duke obviously made him rather unpopular; nonetheless, as the air of Torino got cleaned from the smell of the dye, the nobles were more willing to spend more time in Turin, this way unintentionally increasing the grip of the central authority on themselves. Slowly, gradually, Torino became the most flourishing, popular and admired city in Italy - even though its fame, glory and beauty never could compete with those of Florence, Siena, and the other centres of the Renaissance. Of course, the process of this reconstruction was slow, very slow. The works done in 1444 meant only the very beginning.

Work starts on this ambitious project in the burnt city.

1. People need food and water not large unaffordable houses, palaces and other buildings. People riot against the rich. The Dyers Guild agitate other artisans and tradesmen nationally.( -1 morale/-1 tech to Piemonte for 1 year)

6. Plans have been made clear for support for the original populous they are seen to be made. The people of Piemonte rejoice in support of their leaders. Even immigrants come from far and wide bringing new skills .( +1 morale/+1 tech to Piemonte for 1 year)
