Shhh! I'm busy checking how much influence I can have on the mayoral campaign. I'd run myself, but a CRP candidate is already in the mix. ;)

Who can vote in the mayoral election, and can campaign contributions or grass-roots organization have any effect?

I'm no GM, but I believe players do not vote. That was actually asked a few pages back. The GM's generate the results of local races.

I would assume that campaign contributions would have some affect (maybe not a lot). Public endorsements from big names should carry some weight. If the name has a lot of political baggage it may help and hinder. For example if Josephus endorses a canidate, many right wing voters would almost automatically reject that canidate. Same for Langley and the far left. Grass roots would probably depend on content and activity level, but should be able to help or hinder depending on how they are conducted.

Craig's take on local elections is correct. Once the election day arrives I suspect Blade! will read tea leaves, interpret chicken bones, and consult his star charts and determine a winner.

Also, I think (though Mel or Blade could over rule) that nothing prohibits the ETE from winning elections. But if they tried to establish a fascist state then, yes, better start stocking up on Mothra repellant and watching the bay for ripples. :D

Same thing as if the left tried to establish a Stalinesque dictatorship of workcamps, etc. ;)

OOC: The law enforcement budget seems drastically too high. The United States spends US$ 4.1 billion on the FBI, its premier law enforcement agency. The Department of Justice, with its 100,000+ employees, spends $22 billion on the coterie of American agencies and aid to state & local police. With these figures, spending more than half of the defense budget on law enforcement looks rather, well, ridiculous.

The US does not directly fund its police either though.

Thanks for moving it to the appropriate thread. I still think the budget too high, if not from the federal example then from its proportion to the defense budget.

Btw-- I thought we were a (monarchical) federalist state anyway

*ahem* There should be a rule concerning only active players voting , but I digress, and admit that I really dont care all that much
Not all active players are party members, and not all party members are active. Hence, I wouldn't rely *too* much on membership numbers when guesstimating how many seats a party might get. ;)

Agreed. Eutopia has about as many men under arms as Sweden, but pays more than twice as much (even if you discount the tech investment budget). I've seen some figures that are higher (like here, but not by much. (And these figures are a few years out of date anyway.) Given that the Eutopian military is largely conscripts, the Swedes probably gets better men for less money, too.

Of course, what Sweden doesn't have is a massive, outdated (and thus probably largely useless) navy to support. All they've got these days is a trio of minelayers in the 2000-3000 ton range, and a double handful of small attack boats: See here. Perhaps the NA will think about slashing the military budget and demobilizing some or all of the navy... if they get around to passing a budget this time... :D

If you're referring to the official budget from Term 3 (still the only one we have :)), the number is basically Canada + enormous acquisition funds (which apparently vanished without a trace :D).
