after reading the faq i just joined and have to say i feel a bit overwhelmed. have no clue where to start. could someone shortly fill me in with whats been going on in general and stuff any newbie should be aware about? kinda like the stuff you get on every mexican soap... 'previously on eutopia:'
Sure.

Here are some Handy Tips, first, then some summary.
1 - Read the
Newslink. (It is a "Sticky" thread at the top of the Forum) It provides information about current events in Eutopia, based on some player actions and some Game Events.
2- Check out a Newspaper Thread or two. Some newspapers are partisan others are non-partisan, but may be biased.

Some are updated more frequently than others. But they discuss current events as retold by players.
3. Drop in at the
Town Hall. It can be a little confusing with many conversations going on at once, and hasn't been active in the last few days, but this is an area of common in-game discussion and a good place to ask questions "in character".
4. Drop by a social establishement. There are bars and restaurants, but they haven't seen as much business these past two weeks as people have been campaigning instead of socializing, but this is a good place to meet people and ask questions.
5. When you feel you are ready, if you can find a party you like, join one. It's a good way to get involved in the game and a necessary step for holding office, if that's what you'd like to do.
Now then, what's been going on?
1. We are just finishing the "Senate Elections". Elections that players run in are held every three months. Somewhere in the middle we hold "Senate Elections" which don't have "real" candidates, but non-player characters made up by the GMs. These elections are just a barometer to measure player activity and give the parties a little bit more to do. Also, it means more campaigning, which can be fun, too. The campaigns are officially over and we are just waiting for the results to come in.
2. The UP (Unity Party?) is the largest party in Eutopia and is made up of many veteran players. Their characters joined together as we relaunched Eutopia to bring veteran leadership and stability to the game. It is a coalition of old and new Eutopian politicians, many of whom have (or had) different political views, but agreed to work together after all of the bad things that happened (things the Gamemasters made up to change the island a little bit) between Eutopia 2 and Eutopia 3. Other parties include the UEF which is more conservative, or center-right, the P4P, which is more liberal, or center-left, the ESA, which is to the left of the P4P, and maybe the PURE, which was to the far right, but seems inactive.
3. The government has just officially recognized the two nations to the South that broke away from Eutopia. At the end of this month there will be new embassies established with characters from these countries interacting with the Eutopians.
4. The General Assembly started a bit slow, but has passed some legislation concerning recognition of the new nations, abolishing the draft, and financial incentives for the ailing shipbuilding industry.
5. There are problems (mentioned in the Newslink) with unrest or suspicious activity in various areas of the country, and some interesting sub-plots going on, too, with lawsuits, political fueds, etc.
If it's helpful, maybe one of our players will volunteer to be "on-call" as a mentor if you have any questions about whether or not something is legal, what the background on a given person, institution, or event is, or what you can and can't do with your character,
Welcome to the game,
