Whew...
That was a lot of reading to catch up on!
Okay, let's see where to begin after the 15 NEW pages of OOC forum, not to mention all of the IC posts.
1. "Vote of No Confidence" - This was something discussed that was "left on the cutting room floor". I don't remember the pros and cons of it, but, if there was no game-structure reason for leaving it out, the Transition History was written in such a way (with Gall and Grant) to provide some sort of justification for it. In fact, it was going to be included in the original GRAPPA. If there was IC player interest, and Mel okays it, this could become law.
2. VonStreusser - See? I said don't blow up anything while I'm gone and what happens? Not to rehash the debate which has concluded, but looking ahead:
- The Scuttlebutt is hilarious and perhaps you'd have time/interest to continue it?
- If you need some time off, I can send PJ on a secret mission or something. Time off is fine, just don't leave for good.
3. Hajji - Ditto. Sorry to see you go, if you do go. I know it's tough to rebound from losing Morgan, but it would be great for you to stay around some capacity, if if only as the head hobo of the Hajjite cult!
4. Deaghaidh - Well, perhaps you should restart the Commonality Party? I think there are enough issues in the W.E.T. that if you are unhappy with the direction things have taken, that you could start a lot of your own initiatives.
5. Comments in General about the Elections - Here is something to think about: The UP may be somewhat unlikely, a coalition of former rivals/enemies, united despite a very incohesive, some might say incompatible, spectrum of political beliefs, but who has challenged them?
It sounds like some of the arguments are that there is no Right or Left, only an unbeatable Center. If you feel this way, then you need to work to build a unified party to challenge them, but you should concentrate more on philosophy than an electoral success.
Think about it. A coalition of far-right and far-left would make no sense and would not appeal to voters (GM floating votes), however if you build a strong and articulate party on the left or on the right , it will eventually gain support and attract voters. You may not appear to win the pre-election poll for this term, but you set yourself up as the loyal opposition and can win in the next election.
Look at the old RD, and how long they dominated. Look at the CC and how they won the presidency (again after having to abandon it the first time!

).
The Center (MP) came about through some shrewed role playing and trying to unite the left and right against a (real or perceived, depending on what side you were on!

) threat from the monarchists.
But the Center can be cleaved if a vital and credible alternative exists to attract votes.
Yes, a lot of game veterans have united for electoral success. Personally, I had hoped this wouldn't happen, that instead they'd form new, competitive parties with veteran leaders in each one. But that's not the case.
Given what has happened, it is up to players to offer different platforms, different options, and new leadership. I think the ESA and PURE, regardless of what you think of their platforms are starts. Whether these players are interested in attracting center-left and center-right players remains to be seen, but it is a base.
And, there's nothing that says that you have to agree 100% with a party to join it. Heck, if you like Mel's conservative party but disagree with his position on trade, join it and convince the other party members to change that position! These things happen.
I am happy to see so much activity here recently and am looking forward to the election. Things may appear one-sided to some, but if you count up all of our players then you will see the election really is up for grabs (Polls not withstanding). It's out there for the taking.
And, this is just one election. Oftentimes it takes at least one cycle to build strong opposition. And for coalition governments to realize that they can't agree on everything.
Have fun!
