Since when was Eutopia serious  We've had plagues of locusts in government buildings and all sorts of silly things happen.

Frankly, I've not found the present incarnation of Eutopia very fun or interesting. We wound up with two factions with identical platforms burning each other in effigy over mistatements and spelling mistakes, then a complete re-alignment of the political situation overnight. With the exception of PURE, everyone agrees on virtually everything, yet continues to insist anyone else leading will be anarchy. If (when) real politicians act like this, groups like the Rhino Party form as outlets for peoples frustration with the establishment. But if we try to do the same in Eutopia, its so unrealistic it'll ruin the game? I don't get it.

I agree, I just don't see the big bad harm that the Walrus Party would have caused to the game. And I also think this incarnation of the game so far has been a lot less fun. I can watch two identical parties tear each other apart over who whose dad is, and then I can read three or four newspapers' slanted take on it. Its just not as interesting when everyone takes themselves so seriously, so maybe when things lighten up a bit, I'll come back. But for now, I'm gonna bow out. Sorry to the two or so of you who actually liked the tabloid, but I'd hate to wear out that joke's welcome too.

The last panel of this cartoon reminded me of an incident in EUtopia a couple weeks ago involving the UEF...

jeez man everyone liked the scuttlebutt

the problem people has is, yes protest parties happen but they dont take 15% of the vote, which was physical possible for you to do with the way things were going. protest vote is one thing but you would have had potential for a GA seat for cyring out loud :p
the platforms were fairly similar but the people who would have done them are NOT in common at all. and as events showed they were doomed not to end that way

edit about the dad thing, why do you think i made the paper i did on it? so the UP would shut up on the issue else the rest of the election for me would be spent going after them, which previously had been fairly favorable press.

Another thing, if you run a news outlet you have to print/ air something besides editorials on why everyone else sucks and you and your party should be elected. Campaign in the campaign threads, you don't need another thread for your opinion. There are some exceptions, but in general Eutopias media is actually worse than the real world US media, and that takes a lot of doing, as half of CNN/MSNBC/FOXNEWS is loudmouths ranting about the evils of the opposing political views- and their fellow commentators.

Again, we wouldn't have had a seat, since 1/2-1/3 of our members would not be able to vote- me. So if one to two votes are enough for a seat then the system is broken even without the Walrus Party.

with floating votes, if 2 or 3 votes normal go to you, the protest floating vote could easily land you a seat ;)

:( I didn't mean to make you leave. Its just that what if the Walrus party became like the Rhino party? I mean, a clown beat out a politician in an election. While that makes great press and is fun, it kind of ruins the game. Think about it, if a player goes through the work of setting up issues and brining up ideas and policy gets defeated by someone whose major policy plan is to sunbathe and eat lots of a shellfish? Not really fair, especially if that politician is a new player.

Frankly I am having fun here, because its almost like a real election. Last game we did not have very much 'comedy'. Eutopia Tonight was really the only satire in the game. So far we haven't had even one election but we have 3, maybe 4 satirical outposts. If you didn't like seeing two very similar parties argue it out, perhaps you could have made a different oppinion, something beyond the oppinion of large sea mamals which wouldn't actually be in Eutopia (since we are Bermuda-ish).

If you lose to a clown, its your own fault. You failed to convince people that voting for you would help them in any way, so they might as well waste their vote. If you fail to convince anyone that electing you would make any difference, then you don't deserve to win. How is that unfair?

What would be the world-ending consequences of having a walrus seat in the assembly? We'd make a silly speech or two, propose bills that noone seconded, and likely not vote on anything serious. Or we'd just resign since being an actual full-time mock politician would be too hard.

We won't do the Walrus party now because it wouldn't be any fun. But I think this game is going well when the most spirited "debate" was over who was whoms father. The Walrii were never the most serious threat to the 'realism' of the game.

Once again, I'd ask that anyone who takes serious issue with a mod decision (like the one about the Walrus party) contact us via pm, rather than discussing the matter publicly. The GM usually give people a lot of leeway when it comes to publicly discussing, debating and dissecting our decisions, but there comes a point where that is no longer fruitful and appropriate; I think we've reached one of those points.

Thank you for your attention. :)

Per Ashley. Your proposal is not without merit. I just have one question. If we all support Per Al'aeshir, a brilliant politician without a doubt, would his governing cabinet be made up of UP members only, or selected from across to board according to interest and merit?

Ashley? Who is this Per Ashley you address?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

On another note, I must strive to avoid sharing my thoughts on the Walrus Party issue, but I must implore VS to reconsider his decision. There is plenty of room for satire and the WP did a fine job of that, along with the Scuttlebutt. You're a better player to leave just because a GM ruling didn't go your way. Eutopia would be a worse place without you.

As to this campaign, I've had a lot of fun. There isn't a lot of policy to debate when both main parties were centrist coalitions, but now with the fracturing of the NEC, there will be more opportunities for policy debate. I did find running a campaign against such a large and similar opponent to be an interesting challenge. There was very little margin for error and you had to capitalize on every opening the other side gave you. It was a fun challenge and it was a spirited, if brief campaign, between the NEC and UP. The new phase will be interesting to watch. Policy debates should spring up, as P4P, UEF, PURE, and ESA all have different positions from each other and with the UP. Remember, the official election deadline hasn't even been set yet, there is still plenty of time to debate.

HG: I would've loved to have seen that article published.

I thank you for your sentiments, but I should clarify. I'm not leaving because a mod ruling didn't go my way, I'm stepping back because when it got shot down, it took a lot of the wind out of my sails. I was actually really surprised with how upset I was when I read it. I put a lot of time and thought into it, and was getting really excited before I hit the wall. I realize mod rulings take into account everything they must consider, and I respect Mel's decision howevermuch I disagree with it. Also, he and I had a communication misfire in a PM which he made a couple references to: that PM was asking if we could have a campaign thread for the WP without actually making them an official party, that request was denied after several days of consideration. This led me to think "well, why not try to get them officially recognized?" and Deaghaidh and I started moving with it. Mel and I were saying different things there and thought we were on the same page, so it lead to this mismatch. That I regret.

But its been a very hectic and kind of stressful time for me lately...I spend a lot of time in my "real life" dealing with partisan crap and bitterness and rhetoric, so the last thing I really wanted to do when I came home was get further involved in more of the same, even among friends who don't really mean it. So I'll probably just step back a while and let things cool down before I come back...elections are just a bad time for me all around, I think, be they real or fictional. Once the election is over and things have gotten less...well, you know...then I imagine I'll enjoy the environment a bit more and life will be easier the next time an election comes around. :)

This is where I am. I've been living in Ohio and deluged with Bush and Kerry ads and seeing them on the news, the last thing I want is to go somewhere and see equally stupid and cynical partisan manuevering. IMHO something has gone really, really wrong with the restart, despite a lot of positive rule changes and a great starting scenario.

I never intended the Walrus Party to be an actual party, it was a joke response to someone looking for character ideas that grew on me, especially as things progressed and it made sense for my character in a wierd way. We could have gone on posting nonsense in the Townhall and stories in the Scuttlebutt but how long would it take before that got really annoying? The townhall stuff would have been simple spam, since nothing could come of it. We couldn't have a campaign, make ads, and do all the things that we could have had fun doing, since you have to be a party to do those things.

I understand why they said no and thats not what I'm upset about. I'm not even upset really, I just don't see much point in Eutopia for now. The Walrus Party was a way to stay 'in the game' but on the sidelines until things developed where I could find a role.

I have another idea but I have a feeling it'll be even less popular. I might do it anyways cause I don't want to quit.

The last panel of this cartoon reminded me of an incident in EUtopia a couple weeks ago involving the UEF...

And what would that be?

Mel...is it safe to assume that anything NOT covered in the new FAQs, Readmes, rules, etc..is still covered by stuff in Eutopiary. As an example, I couldn't find anything about the state of our medicare system in the new posts...so I assume Omnicare is still the omnipresent "take care of everything" it was in EU2?

Well, after a long and abnormally active thought process, I've decided to move on to bigger, better things (ie, real life, the AAR forum). It was fun for me...at least until about the middle of Term V. Since then I don't know why I've been watching. For some reason I no longer connect with this place, it no longer tickles my fancy and entertains my fantasy. It's more to do with me than you. But it was fun!

Buena suerte and bon voyage...and Viva Morgan!
