Just a note to reinforce that the Moderate Party supports the arts and the promotion of Eutopia's cultural heritage.

We look forward to future performances of the Eutopian Symphony Orchestra and encourage all citizens to take advantage of this cultural benefit at their next opportunity.

It's back!

This week our spotlight is on Charles Lindhood.

[Biography from the Journal of the Antiquarian Society of Eutopia. Used with permission.]

Charles Lindhood (1831-1893) was born in New Lancaster in 1831 in a family of eight childern of which he was the second oldest. His mother was a Fishmonger and his father a chemist. They were richer than most of the worker's but poorer than the rich. His father send hem to study medicine at King George University (nowadays: New Lancaster City University), where he met Jacques Le Maître who introduced hem to the University Choir. He received his degree in medicine but later moved on to the National Conservatory in Eutopia City, where he studied Music and the violin. It was than on his 21st birthday he wrote his first piece "A tale of flies and flowers", it wasn't a direct succes but still considered today by socialist and non-socialists as a classical marvel of composing.

Later on he worked as doctor in the quickly industrializing New Lancaster. In this function he often saw the effects of bad treatment of the worker's and exploitation of them by their bosses. He also witnessed the consequence of accidents on the Work-floor who could have been easily avoided. He petitioned in vain the bosses to make the work-floors more safely. it was also the time of the revolt's of 1848 in Europe. These were mostly nationalistic off course but first socialist elements came also to light in these period. He silently became a socialist during these years.

He also continued his composing in 1851 with his first epic opera "Ladislavus: the tale of a chained worker", whose performance was forbidden for almost 40 years because of it's political background and of the fact that most people who saw the opera where shocked by the vulgarity of the subject of it. He made also the music for many Worker's Songs like "We'll rule some day!", "New Lancaster Factory", "No Bosses for us" and "The Big Bossomed Lady of St.Brendantown". But also composed more classical pieces like " New Lancaster Waltz", "The Topa's dance Opus 7", "Guitar Concerto nr.3", ...

Pure for his composing he was renown for the use of what they called at that time 'vulgar' instruments like the recorder, the guitar, the bagpipes, ... He borrowed also many sounds from the Folk-tradition.

His Magnum Opus was "Spartacus: the Rise of a slave". He ended this masterpiece when he was 60-years old. The public was wild of it. Even the bourgeois who throughout his live looked down on hem as 'the Vulgar Composer' a tite which he carried with honour, but they didn't saw the correlance between slave and worker, Roman and boss.

Tonight we will be performing the "New Lancaster Waltz", "Topa's Dance", and "Guitar Concerto no. 3".

Thank you.

*music begins*

I have to buy tickets--Mendelssohn is one of my favorites. And I know Kavanaugh is always good, too.

(I would have preferred the Scottish to the Italian, but oh well...:D )

Transcript of Friday's concert

This week our spotlight is on William Kavanaugh.

Born 1819 in Cork, Ireland, William's family moved first to Boston in the United States and then to St. Brendanstown, Eutopia. The family nearly went broke, however, and it was only when William was shown to have a gift for playing the piano in 1833 that the family finally had some sort of income. William quickly turned to composing. He travelled to Germany in 1837 and there met Felix Mendelssohn. William learned quite a bit from this and Mendelssohn's influence shows in his work.

William composed ten symphonies, two operas (the two-part The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, 1855), and innumerable other pieces before his death in 1887 from a stroke. Some of his work is still being discovered today.

Now, to the music.

WEEKLY EUTOPIAN SPOTLIGHT

Friedrich Bach (1844-1879)

A younger branch of the famed Bach family made its way to Eutopia in the early 19th century. Among them was a young man named Johann Friedrich Bach. His eldest son, Friedrich, supposedly played a piano piece at the age of four (though this story, noticeably similar to Mozart's, is highly suspect).

What is known, however, is that Friedrich composed two piano concertos. While this is his only known work, the concertos are perhaps the most famous of Eutopian music. His 2nd, an incredible masterpiece, is considered by most musical scholars the best of any composer.

According to legend (although, again, the story is highly suspect), as Friedrich put the last note of his last concerto upon the paper, he was stabbed by a man whose wife he had supposedly had an affair with. Thus the last movement is called the "Bloodstained" movement; and, in fact, the final notes, forceful and sudden, seem to call to mind repeated thrusts of a knife.

Now, let us begin.
