Introduction

Welcome to the site of the Eutopian Lacrosse Series (ELS), Eutopia's association for Indoor Lacrosse. The ELS currently consists of ten semi-professional teams. Given the history of the sport in Eutopia, these teams are primarily based on and draw from pre-existing college teams. The teams will play each other twice during the regular season; the four top-seeded teams will then proceed to the play-offs, which are decided in best-of-three mode.

Winners of the Teano Cup (ELS Champions)

Season 1: Capistrano Crows

Winners of the Red Stripe Trophy (MVP Award)

Season 1: Greg Cattrano (Chateauvallon Monarchs Goalkeeper)

Assorted Regulations

(1) Teams are ranked according to number of points; if teams have an identical number of points, they are ranked on the basis of their goal differential; if the differential is identical as well, they are ranked based on number of goals scored.

(2) Teams get 4 points for a straight victory, 3 points for a victory in OT, and 1 point if they got defeated in OT.

(3) OT is decided by sudden death.

[OOC:

(1) Since I don't have any sport game I could modify for the ELS, game results are based on a basic value assigned to a team, a home/away modifier, and luck/adaptability/form (aka dice :)).

(2) The ELS is a tentative experiment, since I actually don't know the first thing about Lacrosse, and since I have more than enough to do in Eutopia as it is. So, if anyone wants to help out (please? ;)) - write game reports, post team backgrounders, etc. - I'd be more than happy. :)]

MONARCHS GAME SUMMARY
(Note: Edited)

They all had their reasons for the emotions that spilled out after the Monarchs won the their rematch against the Cascade yesterday with a dramatic overtime victory.

Monarchs goalie Greg Cattrano hadn't won an overtime game since high school. Player/coach Gary Gait has experienced a championship at nearly every level, but before yesterday, he had never been prouder of a team. And Rob Shek, 33, felt justified in deciding to take another shot at a professional crown after contemplating retirement last summer in the American league.

Behind Cattrano, a smothering defense and an offense that has found the peak of form at the season's most critical time, the Monarchs dominated the rival Cascade, whose free-style high-scoring play has suffered since the loss of team captain Johnny Riordan in their last game against the Capistrano Crows.

The over-time victory before 5,596 fans at a stifling hot Morecambe Stadium, in New Lancaster.

"It was a complete [reversal]," said attackman Mark Millon. "Earlier in the season, we had a great game, but in we didn't choose to play our best game. ... Today, that's what we had to do. The Cascade were obviously motivated to play well for their injured captain. I don't care if there are six teams in this league or 50 teams. These six teams are absolutely loaded, and this team we beat today was so, so talented."

Millon, the a candidate for the league's Offensive Player of the Year, won game MVP honors with a five-goal, two-assist performance, but the award could have easily gone to any of a host of Monarchs.

Cattrano was named team MVP at a ceremony honoring the team at the Church of the Epiphany on Sunday and backed up those honors with a 25-save performance.

Gait had two goals and five assists, midfielder Josh Sims had four second-half goals and attackman John Blatchley contributed a goal and a team-record five assists. Paul Cantabene also scored twice and won 20 of 32 faceoffs.

The Monarchs (6-1) took over in a 12 1/2 -minute stretch spanning the first and second quarters, their six-goal run giving them a 14-9 lead. The stretch was highlighted by a two-point goal from Kip Fulks and three goals from Millon, all against Cascade goalie Brian Carcaterra, whose defense never gave him much of a chance.

The Monarchs attempted to land the knockout blow in the third quarter, outscoring the Cascade 5-3 and turning the game over to their defense, which kept the formerly highest-scoring team in the ELS grounded all afternoon.

That defense broke down in the fourth quarter with an injury to Cattrano, allowing the gutty Cascade to rally, tying up the game in the final 20 seconds of regulation, sending it into overtime. A partisan home-crowd, led from the side-lines by Riordan, rose like a tide with every goal scored.

However, those waves of enthusiasm crashed on the solid rock of the Monarch's offense, as Millon stole the day from the hometeam with the game winning goal.

"It was a great team effort from one end to the other," said Gait, who said bringing the championship to Nouvelle Anjou would be even more special to him as a coach than as just a player. "We stuck with what we wanted to do, and we came out and performed. That's what champions do. I am so proud of our team."

Said Cascade coach John DeTommaso: "My overall impression is that we got beat in every facet of the game by a team that really played well. I believed in our team, and thought with our fourth quarter rally we might pull the upset, but today was the Monarch's day."

After watching his team fall behind the Monarchs in the points standings after their last two losses, DeTommaso has seen the Cascade's playoff situation become more perilous. Most observers believe that if Riordan can return before the end of the season, the Cascade can recover. Still, even in a loss the Cascade sent a message to the rest of the ELS. They are not ready to throw in the towel.

The Cascade will not face the Monarchs again except perhaps in the post season. And the Monarchs are committed to maintaining the high level of play necessary for a championship run.

"Our team is very humble, but very grateful for our win," said Cattrano. "Rob Shek said in the locker room before the game that we [hadn't played] our best game [this season], and we went out and played it. ... To win in overtime, playing at the highest level, I had no idea what it would feel like when the regulation time clock struck zero. I am going to remember this for a long time."

Next up for the Monarchs are the Capistrano Crows, who are responsible for Chateauvallon's only defeat of the year.

MONARCHS GAME SUMMARY

"Stunned, I am absolutely stunned," said Capistrano Crows coach Luc St.Jean following his team's 9-20 loss to the Chateauvallon Monarchs.

The Chateauvallon Monarchs avenged an early season loss to the Crows with to pull ahead in the standings for the ELS Championship.

Goalkeeper Greg Cattrano led the Monarch’s stifling first-half defense and earned Red Stripe's MVP honors for his 23-save performance. It was the sixth time this season he has won game MVP honors.

Chateauvallon gained as much as an 11-goal lead in the third quarter before the Crows began inching their way back into the game. The Monarchs were held scoreless for the final 10:35 and the Crows doubled their score to close the gap to 9-20 on a goal from midfielder Brian Silcott with 5:37 remaining in the fourth quarter, after the Monarchs pulled Cattrano to allow rookie goalkeeper Arturs Weekes some playing time.

"Our guys came to play, and after the overtime win against the Cascade, I knew we had the intestinal fortitude to take it to these [guys]," said Monarchs player coach Gary Gait. "Our earlier loss to [the Crows] had been eating at our gut, and these guys were hungry for payback."

The Monarchs balanced attack and impenentrable defense overwhelmed the Crows, who appeared to play flat from the opening whistle. Playing in raucus Espirit Stadium, the Monarchs were greeted with boos and taunts from the Capistrano fans. By the end of the second quarter the stadium was half empty.

Leading the scoring for the Monarchs was Cantabene with two goals and one assist. Also scoring a pair of goals for the Monarchs were Josh Sims, Mark Frye, Gary Gait, Sonke, and Shek. Regan led the scoring for the Crows with four points, including one two-point goal, a goal and an assist. Capistrano’s Silcott and Scott Doyle each had two points.

"We've got a lot of work to do," said Capistrano coach St.Jean, "Apparently our team had too high an opinion of themselves. I think they started believing their press clips. They'll be running windsprints at 6AM tomorrow."

PLAYOFF SUMMARY

Game 1

(Edited)

Playing before an ecstatic home crowd, the Chateauvallon Monarch again took revenge upon the only team to beat them in the regular season, the Capistrano Crows.

The first round play-off victory was executed in the Monarchs' signature style, a tenacious defense and a blitzing triple threat offense, led by Mark Millon, Kip Fulks, and team captain and coach Gary Gait.

"We really picked up our game after the overtime win against the Cascade," said Gait after the victory, "We all made a pact in the locker room at half-time that day. We swore we would play hard for each other, and give 100%. If one of us fell, his teammates would take his place and cover for him. That's how we beat this tough Crows team."

Gaits comments may have been an oblique reference to the spectacular defensive play that stepped up after normally reliable Chateavallon Goaltender Greg Cattrano allowed six early points in the first period.

Midfielder Paul Cantabene and Defensemen Jamie Hanford and Matt Dwan ran a precision trapping game that frustrated the Crows in the second half and helped the Monarchs post a fourth quarter shut out.

"That trap really frustratred us," admitted Capistrano Attacker Scott Doyle after the game, "After watching tape of these guys in their last few games, we knew we couldn't stop them, we could only hope to outgun them and put more points on the board. "

"I thought we did a good job of breaking down Cattrano's weaknesses," said Crows Coach Luc St. John, "but after the second half we ran out of steam. My hat is off to the Monarchs, they were really prepared for us and made good adjustments during the game."

Coach St. John would not comment on the rough play of the Crows and whether he thought the combined team penalty time of 27 minutes was a factor. Penalties plagued the team for the second half of the season contributing to their three-game losing streak leading some observers to question whether Coach St. John has lost control of his team.

After the game Gary Gait and the Monarchs circled the field in a victory lap, shaking hands and waving to their fans who have led the ELS in attendance all season. After pausing briefly for a team prayer, they threw "ELS Finals" t-shirts and hats to the crowd and welcomed children out on the field.

Leading the scoring for the Monarchs was Millon with six goals. Gait and Fulk each had four. Cantabene scored twice and set a new team record the team with 6 assists. Capistrano's goals came mostly in the first half, Scott Doyle scored 4 goals, with three coming in the first period, as did all 3 of Brian Silcott's points. Mike Regan was held to only 1 point and 2 assists owing to limited play following 4 personal fouls.

PLAYOFF SUMMARY

Game 2

In what could be described as the "feel-good" story of the ELS playoffs, the New Lancaster Cascade surged into the semi-finals riding a three game winning streak following their overtime loss to Chateauvallon. The fourth-seeded Cascade overcame the Tabor Titans in a hotly contested rematch of their one-sided Game 10 victory. The game was decided in overtime in what might well be the most dramatic moment of the ELS season.

The Tabor Titans corrected the defensive mistakes that had cost them in their last meeting with the Cascade and relied upon the steady balanced offense that had kept them in the running for the play-offs all season. The tandem of Keith Cromwell and Dan Denihan kept constant pressure on the Cascade backfield and, with the aid of Mid-Fielder Dan Alexander, the Attackers known as the "Two Towers" scored 9 of the Titans' first ten points.

The Cascade kept it close, trailing only by 2 at half time. The Titans stretched their lead in the third period, but the Cascade played their way back into the matchin the fourth quarter when the small but dedicated crowd of New Lancaster fans shook Morecambe Stadium with their cheering.

The fourth quarter ended with the Titans keeping the ball on the New Lancaster side of the field, sending four shots on goal in the final minute. But their momentum would be swept aside by the huge emotional life the Cascade received in overtime, when injured team captain Johnny Riordan emerged limping from the locker room to rejoin his team.

Riordan, who had been injured in Game 6 in a shockingly violent high stick check by the Capistrano Crows, had missed the last four games of the season, but hobbled onto the field and made the assist on the winning point.

"Coach DeTommaso said I'd probably be well enough to play in out next game," Riordan said, "but if we lost in overtime there wouldn't be a next game."

"When Riordan stepped out of the tunnel, I thought I'd die!" said Sarah O'Toole, a devoted Cascade fan who travelled to Tabor for the play-off game.

Dan Paccione, who had assumed Riordan's starting job when the high-scoring Attacker was injured, scored the winning goal on Riordan's assist, and Cascade fans joined the bench-players as they swept the field to carry off both Attackers on their shoulders.

"We probably played beyond our abilities today," said New Lancaster coach DeTommaso, "but the emotional lift we got from Johnny's return was unbelievable. I'm so proud of my team. I wish we were playing the Crows in the finals, because I know my boys would like some payback. I don't care about the fine, write that down, P-A-Y-B-A-C-K. I'm sure we'll be prepared for the Monarchs, but you can mark next year's game against Capistrano on your calendars."

PLAYOFF SUMMARY ROUND 2

Game 1

A change of venue proved to be just the cure for the flailing Capistrano Crows, who avoided the early play-off exit predicted by most ELS observers.

Espirit Stadium, and its rowdy fans, were inhospitable, but not nearly as inhospitable as the tough defense that shackled the Chateauvallon scoring machine.

The Monarchs tied a season low 11 point performance as Chateauvallon Goalkeeper Greg Cattrano broke out of his slump, posting an 88% save percentage for the game only to find that 13 goals was still 2 too many as the team's offense broke down. The Monarch's leading scorer for the season, Mark Millon, was held to only two points, and finished the game bruised and battered by the physical Capistrano defense.

"People seem to forget, but we're the team that beat these [guys]. No one else did, just us, so it's about time we got a little [expletive deleted] respect," said Kevin O'Brien, the scrappy 5'8" Defensemen who spent much of the game harassing Monarch Midfielder Paul Catabene, taking him out of his rythym.

Crows Co-Captain Scott Doyle, the game's leading scorer gave the credit for the win to the defense. "I'm happy to have led our team in scoring, and I don't want to take anything away from the guys on my half of the field, but, c'mon, thirteen [obscene gerund] points? No way you win with 13. Our defense got it done for us today, that's for sure!"

Monarchs player-coach Gary Gait had little to say after the game, "Obviously we're disappointed. We just got roughed up today. I think our defense gave a solid effort, but the Crows just pushed us around the entire game. They challenged us and we didn't step up. We'll go back to the Chateauvallon and prepare for Game 3."

Gait refused to criticize the rough play of the Crows or the noticeably fewer penalty whistles in Game 2 from Game 1. "We're paid to play, and that means playing tough. The referees did their job. Our guys need to be able to play though the checks and the bumps, that's what champions do."

Doyle's 5 points and 2 assists led the Crows, Michael Watson and Conor Gill each added 2. Kip Fulk contributed 3 points for the Monarchs, including 1 during penalty time. Millon and Gait each scored 2. Paul Cantabene was shut out, but had 2 assists for the game.

PLAYOFF SUMMARY ROUND 2

Game 2

At least one team will avoid a Game 3. The New Lancaster Cascade finished the Tabor Titans in Tabor to advance.

The Tabor Titans employed their same zone defense that had worked so well against the Cascade in Game 1 but found it lacking as Team Captain Johnny Riordan led his team through it in the second half, passing wide to the wings and netting 6 assists for the game.

"We're back baby, this is my team and I'm taking it to the finals!" Riordan declared boldy after time expired.

Titans Coach Sal Locascio was disappointed, and somewhat critical of the Cascade, after the loss. "I understand the excitement of a big game and the return of a star player, but I felt there was some poor sporstmanship displayed, with DeTommaso taking the late timeout to set up a score for Riordan with only 22 seconds left and a five point lead. And the rude gestures from those Sombrotto brothers (Cascade Mid-Fielders Steve and Vinnie Sombrotto) to our fans was uncalled for."

Cascade Coach John DeTommaso was noticeably irked by his colleague's comments. "I think that's a pretty petty accusation," said the New Lancaster Coach. "We play to win, and after the season we've had I'm not going to do anything to tarnish our victory. If Sal's got a problem he can take it up with the ELS office. In the meantime, we're going to enjoy our time off waiting for a winner."

Who the Cascade will face will be determined in Game Three between the Crows and the Monarchs. It's no secret that the Cascade would prefer a rematch against the hated Crows.

Riordan's 4 points all came in the second half. Other notable scorers for the Cascade include Tim Goettlemann, 4 points, and Matt Caione had 3 points and 4 assists. Dan Paccione, who had started in Riordan's absence, did not play. For the Titans, Keith Cromwell and Dan Denihan each scored 3 points, and Dan Alexander added 2 goals and 2 assists.
