Religious Groups Clash with Police in Fort-aux-Francais

The capital and largest city of Saint-Esprit, Fort-aux-Francais, experienced turmoil in its downtown this morning as protesters clashed violently with police. Protesters across EUtopia took to the streets in the wake of the so-called "Homesexual Agenda" Bill that was passed earlier this week, but nowhere was there more trouble than in Saint-Esprit, known for its conservative populace.

_1500246_clash300ap.jpg

Police had trouble controlling the crowds, as recent draining of police personnel to WET positions, has resulted in minimal policing levels. Police Commisoner Tackleberry gave a brief statement, "It's a mad house... they're all nuts out there! We.. we've got most of the downtown under control, and ordered a curfew... there's been a lot of damage."

Protests around EUtopia were organized by a coalition of religious faith groups and denominations, uniting in the face of "a morally bankrupt President & Legislature." Around EUtopia, T-shirts were sold, bearing conservative hero, Col. Haynes's image. Apparently, in St. Esprit, violence was sparked after a group called Soldiers of God, who came armed, announced that they would work to change EUtopia into a land of decency and morals.

Senator Blowerd Isolates EUtopia

The EUtopian Military woke this morning and shortly after hearing the news released a collective groan. American Senator Blowerd of Mississippi, head of the US Senate EUtopian Affairs Sub-Committee, is well known for his views on this island nation, and his crusade to sour ties between the US and what he terms "The Security Threat in the Atlantic."

This morning Senator Blowerd demonstrated his growing power at home, and abroad, as he stood in the background while American, and European Union Defense officals announced that EUTopia was being removed from the list of nations deemed acceptable for military trade. As it stands most of EUtopia's military is based on aging American or EU equipment. Ironicly, Senator Blowerd who did not wish to get stuck in EUtopia on an unexpected stopover was found to be ranting that EUtopia did not even send a courtesy delegation to meet him when he was stuck on the "wretched" island last month.

Senator Blowerd commented that it was a great step forward in trans-atlantic policy coordination. EUtopia and its behavior must be curbed. Why just this morning I was informed that "president" O'Floinn siad that he would force responsibility for crimes upon others and that it was his goal to flatten the opposition. Furthermore, the CIA informs me that EUtopia's oppressive spymaster, the so called "Reverend" Teano, in addition to his dabbling in the legislative and executive branches, has now been rubberstamped into the role of the High Court's Attourney-General position. This is the man who heads, EUtopia's secret police, SAW, known for their use of a heavy hand and questionable "law enforcement" duties. This is the nation, where the Executive branch routinely investigates and purges its military and rival political parties. A nation with a thriving trade in piracy, and giving refuge to Islamic extremists, as well as having its own rebelious Muslim population. Furthermore, every sign of intelligence points to EUTopia rapidly moving towards increasing its production and modernization of its military... who is the threat?! I will continue my work, I promise all Americans I will work for a safer world.

EUtopia City Police Arrest Gunman Outside the "Rally for Democracy" HQ

EUtopia City Police arrested what appears to be a hitman, armed with heavy explosives, several knives, and an assualt weapon. An ex-Belgian soldier, Poirot, was taken into custody by police this afternoon. His weaponry appeared to be EUtopian Army issue.
_1633872_toursarrest_afp300.jpg

He confessed he had planned to destroy the RD HQ. The Belgian Government has asked for extradition for prior crimes including arms charges. A letter was found:
To the Government and Parties of Eutopia,

The revolution has begun and we will not stop until our revolution is complete. Our target is the political parties and government of Eutopia not the people so the Eutopian people have nothing to fear.

My only demand is that Dan Hartwell is released from custody and let go in the W.E.T territory.

Remember that we are everywhere and you will never stop us.

The Great Revolutionary

Edwards II Airforce Base Flies Flag at Half-Mast

Cadets led by other Airforce personnel to lower all the flags on Edwards II AFB after it was found out that Per Hartwell was being questioned by police. They paraded by his window later in the day, and many stopped by for tea with the suspended Air Force Chief to discuss what would happen to leadership within the Airforce. An editorial in the cadet paper decried the MILE for arresting Hartwell on nothing more than association with military personell, stating that Hartwell interacted and assigned duties for virtually hundreds of personnel, and that he could not be held responsible for crimes that they may or may not have done, emphasizing the question of what crimes any military personnel had commited.

Per Minister IKK Seen at Parliment Club with Companion

Gossip columnists like myself are all over this spicy tidbit! Minister IKK was seen yesterday evening at some of EUtopia City's ritzier clubs, and one very posh restaurant, finishing the night off with a very late night Coffee at the hip Brewtopia, with a previously unknown ladyfriend. (pictured below)
aishwariya01.jpg

It is rumoured that they met while the Mionister was touring an ENDTech facility. In fact my investigations have found out she, Meena Roy, is indeed an ENDTech employee; a scientist and ex-military consultant... and from a prominent family on New Bengal isle.

Stalled Airport Expansion gets Local Support

The EUtopian Business Roundtable kicked off a move to get attention to the willingness and interest of Korean & Singapore Airlines to make New Lancaster's Intl. Airport their center of Atlantic operations. As always the $2.1 billion pricetag on the required expansion and the activities of the Bluts and the Anarchs have derailed the project in the past, but Michael von Streusser is flying delegates from the airlines into EUtopia on his own expense, in order to keep them interested in EUtopia as a hub.

West Saharans Protest in Hurteau

West Saharans gathered in Hurteu, around the West Saharan Government-in-Exile headquarters to demand that it was time for the EUtopian Government to finally allow the political refugees taken in the freedom to work and travel outside of the secret camp they have been detained in. Protesters claimed that they may as well as not have fled if they were to be kept in this condition.

MDIA Blows Open Conspiricy, Charges a Lt. Gen. with Crimes, Makes Sweeping Arrests in Front of Civilians

Late this afternoon, at a UDAP Rally, Lt. General Rodger Smith was confronted byMDIA personnel, and accused of fostering terrorism in EUtopia. Lt. General Smith was known for his championing of what he termed "Authoratarian Democracy" and had recently left the Rally for Democracy to form his own party, the United Democratic Authoritarian Party[U.D.A.]. Additionally, he came from money, being President of the Smith International Corporation. Many would ask how a 25 year old could be a Lt. General in the Army, but it was no secret that his wealthy family connections, allowed him to be one of the last in the line of officers graduating from EUtopian Prep Military School in Rural Jacobia.. which burned down a few short months ago; known for its nepotism, connections, and wealthy students.

Lt. General Smith, apparently immediately tried to flee the scene. SOme claim he was shouting "rat-a-tat-tat!,"and other claimed they heard screams of gun, and shots. Apparently, Smith's driver in an armored van ignored the MDIA personnel's waving arms and drove hurridly around the corner, where the MDIA's office staff and security guards had lined up most of the MDIA carpool. 2 of the MILE's finest, EUtopia City Police Oficers were on hand, when the Armored Van smashed into the formerly well polished Crown Victorias and rolled on its side.

The Van:
crashlna.jpg

One Accountant from MDIA has taken to a civilian hospital as a result. Police quickly rushed Smith and his driver, who were thrown from the van, to EUtopia City Prision's Hospital Wing. They were accompanied by a confused MDIA Intern, holding a pistol. Smith was heard franticly mumbling about hordes of followers, and a great new future as he drifted in and out of consciousness; he is in serious condition, his driver is not expected to live the night.

Additionally MDIA and MILE personnel that had been guarding many of EUtopia's major Political Party HQs rounded up a number of armed men, in what appears to be inescapable situations. At the CRE headquarters 2 MDIA speechwriters were killed when a bomb went off killing the men they were confronting as well. SOmr Pers fleeing the scene were arrested by the numerous MILE Police swarming the area already on High alert, and other were carted off in Crown Victorias to an unknown MDIA location. A civilian was shot in front of the ELP HQ bfore MILE Police apprehended the gunmen firing at MDIA personnel.

Statements have not been issued, but it is thought that a major terrorist event was prevented... or perhaps a government excercise.

Neuwestbaden Stock Exchange Celebrates Decimal System

The NSEX celebrated its reopening after being temporaily shut down for an infrastructure upgrade, and a conversion to decimal based trading, moving away from 1/8ths share based trades. The NSEX was founded in 1857 by German imigrants, and was originally housed out of the back of a Deli. It became and has remained by far EUtopia's largest stock exchage.

EUtopia Magazine Nominates Amric Al'Aeshir as EUtopian of the Year

Despite being an Immigrant to EUtopia, Per Al'Aeshir was recently appointed Minister of Health, Environment, and Social Services, after his tireless work as Chairman of the EUtopian Society for the Environment, in which he contantlied rallied for reforming EUtopia's polluting Power Industry. The Minister is indeed the same former-American author of Nebula Prize winning Science Fiction, beloved the world over. Eutopia's prestige grows with his presence, which is why EUtopia Magazine selected him to feature on their annual tourism edition, sent worldwide to promote EUtopia.

Soldiers of God Orgnaization Holds EUtopia City Rally

The "Soldier of God" rallied on the campus of EUtopia City University to decry the actions of a government they decry as being "one that brings tears to God for passing the Homosexual Agenda Bill." They have vowed to see the bill overturned. A special prayer session was held, in which Parliment Member, Per Rebeecca Cook (2nd Female in Parliment ever) was urged to "find a man to settle down with and give up her hedonous ways and embrace of sin."

West Saharans Begin Hunger Strike

Following protests in Hurteau last month, some prominent W. Saharans, including naturalized EUtopian novelest Daebe Chinu, began a hunger strike to protest the Ministure of Culture's failure to address their cause, and the government's treatment of refugees; some openly fear that the government may have no intention of removing them from their "secure location."

U.S. Officer Assasinated in Iraq: EUtopian Muslim, and Attourney General's Nephew Held

Lt. Hanson was gunned down yesterday morning in downtown Baghdad during broad daylight hours on a busy street. Witnesses reported three men with painted faces surrounding and gunning down the American officer after giving out loud high pitched cries akin to those of an eagle; one immediately fled the scene, while the other two sat down and carved out Hanson's liver. American Military Forces immediately arrested the man in question.
0212lip47.jpeg

The men turned out to be Michael Kamal A'rai, and Johnny Teano, both EUtopian citizens, and students at EUtopia City University. Johnny Teano is the nephew of Attourney General Jack Teano, and a Master's Student in Topan Studies. Per Michael A'rai is a devout Muslim and also is a blood relation of Elizabeth Quara A'rai, Lt. Hanson's former wife, and rape victim. Last year, apparently Lt. Hanson fled EUtopia secretly after being wanted by the WET police. (see back issues) This started a maelstorm of contraversy both domestic and international.

Anthropologists have identified the "cry" as a traditional A'rai clan battlecry, and the liver removal as the traditional Topan rite in the end of a blood feud; no 'offcially' documented occurances of this rite have been reported in over a century, while the A'rai battle cry has not been used formally in over 143 years. The Eldri'li Tribe's uprising in 1913 was the last time the formal battlecry of any native EUtopian group was given.

US Forces have not yet commented on the issue.

Election Jitters: Voters at a Loss Over Moderate Party Absence

Early exit polls revealed a sense of confusion and uneasiness with cast votes as the EUtopian Populace was faced with a ballot absent of MP delegate candidates. Citizens voiced anger at MP leadership, and at the fact that they weren't sure who to vote for. The MP was wildly popular after a very succesful term in which fringe military dissidents, and foreign governments put much pressure on EUtopia. Of course this did not hold true across the nation, citizens of WET, and religiously conservative portions of the island hailed the MP's withdrawal as appropriate given their record. The growing "Soldiers of God" movement held victory parties in several locations, vowing to next take down other "pre-sin" parties, singling out one MP, Rebecca Cook especially.

elections.jpg

In the meantime, it seems the majority of votes, which were mostly destined for the MP were split across the spectrum of political parties in EUtopia.

Supreme Judge Blade! Steps Down, High Judge George Dravidasthas becomes Supreme Judge

In a surprise election time move, Supreme Judge Blade! stepped down from his position. The former Head of State and Regent, who at one time presided over all three branches of the government following King Edward IV's death. The Honorable Per cited two major reasons; one being that his wife, Franchesca has taken on too many duties at the Royal Foundation, to effectively manage the Blade! Family Holdings & Estates; and the second being interpretted from an off the shoulder comment, about EUtopia's political process needing additional leaders with experience: it is thought he may once again re-enter the political scene, perhaps in his former role as a political activist and lobbyist. High Court Judge, George Dravidasthas replaced Blade! as the High Court selected Supreme Judge. Additionally, MILE Jacobia District Judge, Ralph O'Higgins, was selected and has accepted the position opned up on the High Court by Blade!'s departure.

Rumblings in the Stock Market

The NSEX had a tumultuous week, as election predictions, and the withdrawal of the MP from the elections worried investors. Additionally, the threats of a trading freeze accelerated the SIC's complete collapse in stock value, following Per Smith's arrest, its suspected connections to terrorism, and lack of leadership, and what was already characterized as critical overextension of resources.
StockXchange-copy.jpg

...late breaking news!!!!! SIC is frozen in price! Buisnessmen grumble.

West Saharans Gather at the Home of Daebe Chinu

Famed Author, Daebe Chinu, has perservered many injustices in his life; from struggling as an ethnic minority in revolution era Spain, to fleeing his homeland in W. Sahara after criticising Morroccan control. Now, after a long hunger strike the old man lies in his bed at home in the suburbs of Hurteau, surrounded by friends and family. Outside the house people have gathered in prayer and to demonstrate solidarity.

Teano Mania in France?

In what many EUtopians may consider a strange phenomenon given foreign relations as they are with Franco-EUtopian relations at an all time low, Per Teano has begun to show up on T-shirts and tatoos as sort of a strange pop culture icon. Mentioning Queen Maria on the other hand brings about a frosty turn of the nose even by French standards. It seems Teano's dashing personality has caught the glimmer of French society, much like Gorbechov, former leader of the USSR, became the American media's darling in the late 80s.

ENS Undeniable Brought into Farpoint

The Naval Tug, ENS Orion, pulled the ENS Undeniable into Farpoint's fishing docks, after Naval Supply located one of the few docks appropriate for the large vessel. Farpint was the closest city to the site where the ENS Undeniable experienced a catastrophic weapons failure during excercises. An offical Naval inquiry into Captian Joe Allen's actions has not been announced. Sunset yesterday saw the ENS Orion docked alongside the ENS Undeniable to keep it from sinking.

HEADLINE: Noted Eutopian Dies in Blaze

Hugh Bartlett, member and founder of ELP, former member of ERP, LD, and RD, former minister, and civic leader active in environmental and homosexuality groups as well as passionate fan of cricket and Aussie-Rules football, died early this morning of smoke inhalation resulting from his heroic actions in New Lancaster City.

Bartlett was in town to interview prospective candidates to receive a fellowship from the Bartlett Fund, a philanthropic institution he had established to promote quality in public service. After staying up late to watch Pacific Rim Cricket via Satellite, Bartlett was seen walking to his hotel in the early morning in the vicinity of the "Bowery District", a rougher section of New Lancaster City.

Experts say it was about this time when the Glendale Arms apartments began to burn. The apartments had been built in the 1940's as affordable-yet-comfortable quarters to house the stream of immigrants arriving on Eutopia's shores. In recent years the Glendale Arms has been nearly vacant as it is run by an absentee landlord and the high crime in the area has driven away all but the most stubborn residents. This property is also just outside the proposed route for a new access road to the planned New Lancaster Airport expansion terminals.

Ms. Adeline Covington was awakened by the crying of her two daughters and woke up to find an apartment full of smoke. She attempted to flee her eighth floor loft with her daughers, but twisted an ankle and became trapped. Her eldest daughter, Maggie, found Mr. Bartlett covered in a wet heavy rug, trying to help people out of the building. Maggie's pleas inspired Bartlett back into the burning to rescue the girl's mother and sister.

He succeeded in carrying both the mother and infant child from the building before collapsing on the street. He was rushed to Eutopian General Hospital and treated for severe burns and smoke inhalation but was pronounced dead at 4:12am this morning. A memorial for Mr. Bartlett is schedule for Monday evening.

Ms. Covington and her daughters were among 32 survivors of the late night blaze. Seventeen others are confirmed dead and two are missing. Firemen investigating the Glendale Arms state they are "90% sure" the fire was deliberately set.

Business: New Financier Makes Splash with Quick Acquisitions

Eutopa has a new business mogul, who is a bit of a paradox. He has made waves with some high visibility acquisitions of notable Eutopian landmarks, but he himself remains shrouded in mystery, letting his representatives conduct his business for him.

Monsieur Renard Rouge is CEO and sole owner of La Compagnie de Renard Rouge, a holding company which has recently purchased the popular brewpub BrewTOPIA and the Chateauvallon Partisans NAFL team. He seems quite reclusive and has yet to be seen beyond his private compound purchased on Ile Méridionale Petite, a small island southeast of Hurteau.

kingpin3.jpg

Little is known about Monsieur Rouge except that he built his fortune in the West African nation of BiEUnna-GissEU, where he controls that nation's rich oil supplies. It is rumored that he is a former mercenary strongman who saw extensive combat in guerilla conflicts throughout Africa in the 1980's and 90's.

Daring Daylight Robbery of Low-Cost Food Chain Store

Three gunmen were captured on blurry video tape robbing the Saint Esprit's SIC-mart on the outskirts of the town. Robbers, who identified themselves as revolutionaries, claimed that they were collecting a revolutionary tax. One of the guards was hurt during the assault and taken to the hospital where he's undergoing examinations. Experts estimate about 15,000 ducats to be stolen, along with a box of band-aids, and a sports magazine. Local MILE agents claim an investigation is underway.

ESRP Gives Capitalism a Chance
Not necessarily. However financial experts were quite surprised to see the formation of the SoCoH (Socialist Cooperative Holding), an organization created by the ESRP to control the stocks which the party owns in their newly opened Cooperative Supermarket chain, called "Fairtrade" and the Eutopian Worker which will incorporated later as a Cooperative printshop.

Fairtradea cooperative supermarket, the first of its kind in Eutopia , opened in New Lancaster this weekend. The Supermarket is owned by the workers, clients and ESRP.
Fairtrade's stocks won't be available on the stock exchange, and ESRP spokesperson announced, but will be sold to the clients and the workers, 25% of the stocks will stay in the hands of the ESRP. Details of the SoCoH financial organization were released as well as their governing structure.

Fairtrade has announced a strategy of trying to circumvent the middleman in the distribution process and buy directly from the producers and pay them a fair price for their wares.

Farmers, particularly those in areas with a strong rural-socialist bent cheered this development while teamsters groused that they would suffer as they lost business from existing distribution contracts.

MECT IKK Lauded for Temporary Break in Hunger Strike

Famed Author, Daebe Chinu, has temporarily suspended his hunger strike thanks to the national attention granted to the Western Saharan refugees by MECT Vasco IKK, who joined him in a meager meal of fruit, water, and rice.

Western Saharan leaders in Hurteau have formed a government in exile and have been petitioning the Eutopian government to free Western Saharan refugees who have been detained here since the administration of President Murmurandus. Minister IKK has agreed to hold meetings with the leaders of these refugee camps and the outside government in exile.

International organizations had been condemning Eutopia's treatment of these refugees while some governments, notably those of Spain, Morocco, and the United States, have called the refugees terrorists and demanded their extradition to Morocco. One of the camps, Camp Delta, in Isla de Guantamo in Hurteau,is seen below.

lthumb.1064349686.guantanamo_investigation_nyet151.jpg

MECT IKK has received praise from many African nations for his role in negotiating this matter, and it has been suggested that he may be nominated for an international human rights award, depending on how fruitful these negotiations end.

More Unrest in Hurteau

Not long after pro-Refugee protests ended, and Soldier of God marchers dispersed after noisy demonstrations against CRE member Rebecca Cook, an illegal broadcast was heard over the area of Hurteau being broadcast by so called Guerilla Radio.

The broadcast called the people up to revolt against their capitalist WASP oppressors. Police in the area, responding to complaints weren't able to track this broadcast to one fixed point, leading some experts to believe it was sent out from a mobile delivery source.

The same night many posters appeared on the wall with words like "Ché est pas Mort", "la Latine libre", "Bush = assassin", "governement = junta", 'Non, à fascism', "Vive Fidel, Vive la revolution", "le MEOR notre Héros".

Soldiers of God Caucus

A Eutopia City convention of the 200 chapters of the fundamentalist Christian organization, "The Soldiers of God" quietly wrapped up business with a straw vote that asked members to select a preference among the nation's political parties.

The results:

  • - ERCP: 41%
    - CC: 34%
    - CRE: 11%
    - EPP: 9%
    - MP: 1 %
    - no pref: 4%

Angry Topans call for Morgan's Resignation

A parade to honor MDIA Charles Morgan's work in the capture of attempted coup orchestrator Roger Smith was interrupted by several shouting Topan protestors who blockaded the street waving signs and chanting for Morgan to resign.

This was in reaction to the unconfirmed reports that he publicly stated that he did not know the Topas were Muslims.

"We cannot be led by a man who is so ignorant of his own country!" one of the protestors demanded, "how can he represent Eutopia abroad if he doesn't even know the country himself!"

soli_meeting_na_kupuna.jpg

Other parade goers were unimpressed by the protest.

"Seems to me that Morgan's done a fine job," said one bystander "Why do people take themselves so seriously? Let the man get on with his work".

Topan leaders across the country have been meeting to discuss this situation and are rumored to be seeking an audience with the president to discuss this issue.

Meanwhile Morgan's popularity nationally remains high after his high profile role in recent events.

HEADLINE: GROCERY STORE ROBBERIES CONTINUE

Two more daring day-light robberies occurred in Saint Espirit, one in Castries, the other in Dzadouzi. Groups of armed men, about five per group, carried off a total of approximately 37,000 ducats from the merchants in this low-income province.

The first incident took place at another SIC-mart, the low cost chain grocer. The second, in Dzadouzi, at the Gulp-n-Blow market and restaurant.

Proprietor Juan Frances of the "Gulp-n-Blow" says:

"This will likely ruin me. Margins are so low at my franchise, even if the parent company prospers by losses have been so bad in this poor economy, I'll likely have to shut down. I don't know if we could attract another market to serve these people. Not if we're going to be targets for hoodlums."

Reaction in Castries was a bit different as store manager Jean Ramirez brandished an old hunting rifle.

"I don't know who they were or what they were talking about, trying to TAX me. My taxes are too high already! They might have cleaned our my register, but with old Beatriz here I know I winged at least one of them. Maybe more."

St. Espirit police have increased their patrols in response to these latest robberies, but no leads, other than the non-descript dirty vans without license plates that pulled away from both crime scenes, have been found.

Business: More Moguls Make Meutopia, um, that is, Eutopia, Home

Monsieur Renard Rouge continues to increase his business holdings in Eutopia, investing in struggling tobacco growing operations in the southern provinces. He has also begun inquiring into various media outlets.

However he is joined by two other emerging business tycoons.

James T.Markinson owns, through his Markinson International Company holding company, 100% interest in: MILtech Military Industries (based in Murmask), Markinson Security and Eutopian Atlantic Airways (based in Eutopia City).

Markinson's business interests run concurrent to his active involvement and rapid rise in Eutopia's military, which some have accused of giving out ranks on a patronage system.

Also emerging is Patrick Connel, media mogul who controls Ctv, C-News,
C Sports, CTR, Ghetto Inc, New Lancaster arena, significant interest in Bluerail and a controlling interest in the Farpoint United Football team.

Business regulators have taken notice and have been dusting off their anti-trust laws and regulations concerning media ownership. With the memory of Roger Smith's rampage fresh on the public's mind, there is a great deal of suspicion surrounding these men.

Both Connel industries and Markinson's Eutopian Atlantic Airlines have applied for an initial public offering which, if the risk of the security is deemed reasonable, will be offered soon.

Environmental Study of Airport Concludes Negative Impact Likely

Overworked MHES advisors completed their three part report on the environmental impacts of the proposed New Lancaster Airport Expansion.

The report detailed three problem areas. Increased emissions, for which it proposed a remedy that should be revenue neutral; Damage and destruction of wetlands, for which it proposed a remedy that could prove costly; and Probable Extinction of a unique species native to Eutopia, the Eutopian Tiger Mosquito. This report is available at the MHES office.

Strange Craft Sighted Off Coast
A Eutopian sea patrol spots a motorized dinghy fleeing Eutopian waters near the Buen Puerto sea port. The patrol boat gives chase, but the dinghy flees to international waters where it is picked up by a freighter bearing Algerian flags.

Given recent NAFA discussions, the presence of a foreign ship just outside Eutopian waters has caused concern among the commanders of the Eutopian Coast Guard, but what the craft was doing or where it had landed are unknown.

SOLIDERS OF GOD LEADER IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING ASSASINATION ATTEMPT

Per Charles DeSpirit, General Secretary of the national federation of the Eutopian “Soldiers of God” chapters was gunned down in broad daylight during a peaceful rally in the Parc de Liberte in Fort-au-Francais yesterday.

Witnesses reported that, just as DeSpirit was stepping up to a podium, two vehicles came speeding off of the road through the crowds, flung their doors open, and released a hail of sub-machine gun fire. Only the quick actions of ERCP party chairman, James Markinson saved the General Secretary from certain death. Markinson threw himself into DeSpirit and the two men landed behind the stage, sheltering DeSpirit from further gunfire.

Policemen who had been on the scene to guard against any political violence responded immediately and returned fire into the Mini Coopers. The assailants sped off and while police gave chase, the assassins lost them in the narrow streets of the provincial capital.
The license plates on the cars were recorded, but matched those of two automobiles reported stolen weeks earlier.

DeSpirit, Markinson, one police officer, and sixteen bystanders were taken to Eutopia General Hospital, where Markinson was treated for minor cuts and released. DeSpirit remains in critical condition. It is believed that at least one of the assassins was killed in the attack.

Later that day, a telephone call to the Eutopian NewsLink office, claiming to represent the MEOR, claimed responsibility for the assault. The 22 second message stated, "The Most Enlightened Order of the Revolution claims another victory on the reactionaries. We've shot ‘The Solider of SOD’!”

Black-outs Paralyze Eutopia

Errors in the computer programming monitoring the national electric grid led to rolling black-outs throughout Eutopia on Friday before much of the nation was plunged into darkness. Businesses, government offices, and schools all were forced to close early in response to the black out.

Of notable mention is the failure of redundant data-backups at ENDTech, which led to the loss of key research data on the state-owned firm’s latest research projects. Luckily the most recent back-up of the data preserves much of the work and ENDTech team leaders believe they have lost, at most, one week’s work .

Police forces were deployed immediately and did helped maintain order. Not a solitary incident of looting was reported.

Government regulators have confirmed EP&L’s claim of computer error and no negligence has been found.

With power restored, Eutopians hope to quickly recover and expect things to be back to business as usual by Sunday evening.

MISSING: Two Children Reported Missing in the Buen Puerto Area

Two young boys, Tomas DePaolo and Enrico Pima have been reported missing after 48 hours have passed with no sign of them. The children were last seen near the sea port in Buen Puerto, Isabella. Local Police do not anticipate foul play and are conducting a manhunt, which was temporarily disrupted by the power outages.

Severe rough weather has led the chief of local police to suggest that the boys, who often played on the rocky cove, may have had an accident.

Markinson International Company Liquidated after Government Inquiry

MIC CEO James Markinson, prior to the shooting in Fort-au-Francais, announced the break-up of the holding company which held his diverse portfolio of businesses.

Government regulators, wary of the concentration of business capital in the hands of military leaders announced in inquiry into the holdings and management of MIC and were requesting a formal review of Markinson’s military service vis a vis his time spent overseeing his business interests.

Rather than be burdened what was expected to be a year long audit, Mr. Markison chose to liquidate MIC, placing profits into a blind trust which would be available to him only after his discharge or retirement from his military career.

Few Eutopian businesses were involved in the purchases of the former MIC companies, but one, Le Compagnie de Renard Rouge, successfully outbid British investors for significant ownership interests in the domestic MIC companies.

Origami Bomber Survivors & Victims’ Families Protest Verdict

With chants and banners, family members of those who died at the hands of Zaphod Beeblebrox confessed “Origami Bomber” and survivors of his attacks protested outside the Eutopia City offices of the MILE and the Law Offices of Hawkton Tilly.

Calling it a “gross miscarriage of justice”, widows and orphans denounced the decision as “shameful” and “politically expedient”. Some went so far as to question the legitimacy of the insanity defense in Eutopian Law.

“There’s a difference between someone with an IQ below 60 who doesn’t understand the responsibility of his actions, and someone who commits horrible, but deviously planned and meticulously executed, murders and claims that they only way they could have done something so awful is because they were crazy,” said noted Law Professor Sean McNichols, a friend of murdered education reformer and former MECT Elijah Hamilton.

After obtaining the legal permits, family members of Beeblebrox’s victims committed to remain picketed outside of Tilly’s law office until “justice is done”. No clarification of what this entailed was given. Mr. Tilly was able to use the recent black-out to avoid the protestors and return home.

Topans Turn in Weapons

Several groups of Topans in the WET came forward and turned in military-grade assault rifles, sub-machine guns, and rocket launchers to the WET police.

Police Commissioner Hightower has kept the Topans in custody, but insists that they are not under arrest, rather “they are being held for their own protection as we work out suitable amnesty for their voluntary surrender of these weapons”.

NAFL to Expand by Two

The surprisingly popular support for American Football, made possible by the immigration of several star American players has provided the NAFL with the opportunity to expand mid-season.

The Commissioner’s office promises two expansion teams: one, owned by Connel Industries, will be located in New Lancaster City and is yet to be named. The other team is rumored to be owned by attorney Hawkton J. Tilly, and is thought to be opening in Gilford, Jacobia, though this has this has yet to be confirmed.

The new teams and their logos will be unveiled in a special ceremony mid-week.

HEADLINE: U.S. MILITARY INVADES EUTOPIA - PURSUIT OF REBELS ENDS IN FIERY DEATHS

U.S. CLAIMS ACTIONS NEEDED TO PROTECT AMERICAN LIVES

A bold pre-dawn mobilization of forces from the US Naval Base at Farpoint sent US marines and naval aviators deep into WET territory on a search and destroy mission for Eutopian terrorists which attacked the base an hour earlier.

At approximately 4:50am, flaming Molotov Cocktails were hurled from the wooded areas surrounding the base from four different points, setting off a general alarm.

Though accounts are varied, there are then reports of further assault on the base by grenades and automatic weapons. The southeast wall was then destroyed by a high-explosive device hurled into the smoke and flames. The body of a local man, of Norse-Eutopian descent, was found outside the walls. It is believed he perished in the blast.

US forces responded immediately to the attack, as tensions at the base have been extremely high since the gruesome murder of Lt. Hanson earlier this month in Iraq by Topa activists.
Marines, using night vision sighting, poured out into the night and engaged four armed Topas, ending in the deaths of the attacking rebels. With the identification of the attackers as Topa, the alert level heightened, and search and destroy orders were issued.

The USS Litton-Ingalls, stationed at Far Point, deployed a dozen CH-46 Sea Knights to assist in the search, and the helicopters soon came under fire from two vehicles fleeing southeast toward the mountains. When the Sea Knights came under fire from what appeared to be an RPG (like one stolen from Eutopian barracks earlier during the O'Floinn presidency), the Americans took no chances and deployed the Litton-Ingalls' 5 AV-8B Harrier jets that tracked the rebel jeeps, overtaking them in no time, and then turned their 25 mm guns on the jeeps, blowing both to bits.

av-8_4.jpg

Picture: Harrier dusts off near the site of the assault on the rebel jeeps.

Sea Knight search and reconnaissance took place over the skies of the WET throughout the day and armed marine patrols rode through the streets of Farpoint, occupying the city. Farpoint police have not resisted the far better armed marines, and the city leaders have remained uncharacteristically quiet.

The United States issued a statement that it will defend the lives of its enlisted men and US property at all costs and that it will consider all possible options in eliminating this radical terrorist threat. It did not rule out unilateral action, with or without Eutopian cooperation, in the destruction of terrorist organizations operating from within Eutopia.

It announced that the military occupation of Farpoint would end once the threat to the American base had clearly ended, and called on Eutopian civilians to cooperate with American security forces who were there to keep the peace until the security barriers around the base could be repaired. It called upon the Eutopian government to take swift and decisive action to eliminate the terrorist population of their island, and to end its policy of political appeasement toward these radical groups.

The USS Litton-Ingalls remains at high alert and it is being reported that it will be joined by other members of the Amphibious Squadron Sixteen, consisting of two marine amphibious readiness groups.

Dan Hartwell Missing from Cell: Used Confusion to Make Getaway, Officials Believe

After months of being held by the government for intensive questioning in connection with accusations of conspiracy against the government of Eutopia, former Lt. General Dan Hartwell escaped the minimum security cell where he had been living in preparation for his military tribunal hearing.

Security experts believe he was able to overpower a guard and secret himself in the jail's laundry delivery, being taken off premises with the soiled linens before his absence was even noted. It is feared that he had been missing for four hours before the search began.

The overpowered guard, one Private Bubba Forrest did not bear any ill will toward his attacker. Indeed, to many like Forrest, Hartwell had become a bit of a folk hero, despite the severity of the charges against him. "Aw shucks, I don't hold it against Lt. Dan," said Forrest, "Why, he just wanted to get outside again. He'll be back. I know."

Security and Analysis Wing investigator B. Pearce indicates that it is obvious that Hartwell had outside help in this escape, but the agent would make no further statements, claiming that to reveal more might jeopardize the investigation.

Hartwell is not believed to be an immediate threat to citizens, but it is warned that he could be planning political violence. All citizens are urged to immediately report any signs of him to the police or the military.

Noted Professor Booted from Faculty - Leaves Antiquarian Society

Colorful socialist and former presidential candidate Dr.De Vlaminck was fired as professor for the University of Saint-Esprit, concerning reports that he falsified and misrepresented research reports and his role with the university in making statements at a recent town hall meeting.

His fellow academics were stunned and outraged at his deception, though some defended his rights to freedom of expression but simply disagreed with his methods. Later that day he also resigned his position with the Antiquarian Society of Eutopia. An organization he founded and nurtured to its peak in the days of President Murmurandus.

DeVlaminck said that he regretted the incident and suggested that perhaps his actions could have been handled differently, but noted that he has a world of opportunities ahead of him in politics and public service.

Police Suspect Foul Play in Children's Disappearance
Local police searching the rocky area where the missing children - Tomas DePaolo and Enrico Pima - of Buen Puerto, Isabella where last seen have reported finding stains of blood they believe may belong to the boys. Local police now believe foul play may be involved.

Buen Puerto residents have been become increasingly critical of the MILE and his lack of attention to this case, some going so far as to accuse him of giving his NAFL football franchise greater priority.

Recovered ENDTech Data Shows Mixed Results

Recovering from island-wide blackouts, ENDTech was able to recreate clinical trial data for it's latest two research projects: The Micro-Impulse Radar and the Man-Portable Infrared Scanner.

The Micro-Impulse Radar proved effective in monitoring even the slightest of details when used to penetrate stationary materials or objects. However, reception was found to be spoiled by attempts to view through obstacles with complex moving parts, machinery or intense electro-magnetic fields. The hand-held unit was found to be limited in range to three meters for producing reliable imagery when encountering such obstacles. Without such obstacles the range increased to twelve meters.

The biggest set-back for the Micro-Impulse Radar has proven to be the power source. Battery supply of the power required has proven to be insufficient, and researchers have been forced to rely on batteries much larger than the actual handheld unit. Attempts to operate using smaller power sources have not been able to sustain continued usage.

The other project, the Man-Portable Infrared Scanner, has faced similar problems in terms of power source and longevity of charge for a hand-held unit, but not to so severe a degree as the Micro-Impulse Radar.

The unit effectively read heat signatures off of people and vehicles through darkness, and at limited ranges through soft obstacles. It was unable to penetrate hard materials.

Researchers are hopeful that with additional research the Micro-Impulse Radar may be able to solve its power source problems, but are less optimistic about the potential of the Micro-Impulse Radar.

Religious Group Threatens Retaliation

Soldiers of God members from across Eutopia have made pilgrimages to Hurteau for the laying to rest of their slain leader Charles DeSpirit. DeSpirit was pronounced dead yesterday morning at Eutopia General Hospital. Official cause of death was massive organ failure resulting from the multiple gun shots he received while making remarks at a peaceful rally in Fort-Aux-Francais.

DeSpirit might have died on the spot if not for the heroic action of James Markinson. Markinson was not available for comment at the death of DeSpirit, however chapter presidents of the SOG announced that they will take their case directly to the President to protest the lack of safety and protection of peaceful political dissenters in Eutopia.

"We came and operated within the system and look what happened!" SOG Gilford Chapter President Kurt Wagster commented, "No more! If we must arm ourselves to protect our very lives, then we shall. If godless swine want to try to strike us down we will respond in kind. For it is written, an eye for eye, a life for a life!"

PICTURE: SOG President Wagster makes his threat.

Report: Surrendered Topas Have Information on Hartwell

Though non-governmental communication with the Farpoint Police has been cut off with the US occupation of the town, reports from earlier this week indicate that the Topa who earlier turned themselves in to Farpoint authorities have information concerning Lt. General Dan Hartwell and his involvement in affairs at the WET.

The exact nature of this information is unknown and given more pressing matters it may be some time before this is revealed. The exact location of these Topa is undisclosed at this time and the Farpoint town officials have responded angrily to any questions not concerning the US occupation.

Disturbing Defacement of Dustbins

From Jacobia to Isabella, citizens woke to find, if not that they were under the occupation of a foreign government, that there was somethign strange and disturbing in the communities.

Dustbins across the country had been painted and otherwise decorated from the standard colors of black, green, or red, to a stange "camoflage" pattern ususally associated with hunting or military gear.

"I don't like it! It scares me!" commented Granny Entwistle of New Lancaster City.

"Kinda weird, I think" said Georges Treudeau of Chateauvallon.

"Is it somekind of military thing? Or worse, some sort of terorrist or revolutionary thing?" asked a nervous Shirley DeMers of Eutopian City.

Currently there seems to be no information about the strange defacement. No one has claimed credit for it, nor have there been additional defacements. In many cases discarded paint cans and brushed have been found.

Obviously a low priority it light of recent events, police have termed this defacement as "juvenile, but essentially harmless", some noting that many dustbins did in fact need painting.

AMERICANS HONOR THEIR DEAD

American flags were lowered to half mast today as the sixty-two bodies of dead Americans were officially returned to the United States. Fifty-nine were killed by the grendade, machine-gun fire, and high-explosive assault on the naval base earlier in the week. Three others died recently of the wounds they suffered.

burial.jpeg

Nineteen Americans remain in critical condition in the bases Emergency Medical Unit, while seven have been upgraded to stable condition.

Four Eutopians working on the base where also killed in the assault and another was wounded by the attack.

American also released today evidence of the high-explosive device that was hurled over the breached wall. It contained a crude timer that appeared to have malfunctioned, but was believed to have been attached to enough HE plastic explosive that, had it gone off as intended, casualties could have double and the blast area would have increased by 175%. Though it malfunctioned, the device appeared to be somewhat complicated and more sophisticated than those typically seen in rebel attacks. Some amount of skill was utilized in its design.

The Americans remained on high alert as the USS Litton-Ingalls was joined by other members the Amphibious Squadron Sixteen. The squadron began continued reconnaissance and patrol over the Farpoint area.

TOPA IN FARPOINT CUSTODY DENY ROLE

PICTURE: Funeral for Amercian Casualties of the Attack

The Topa who earlier last week turned themselves in to Farpoint law enforcement authorities and who have been held in secret protective custody ever since made a public appearance backed by WET Police Commissioner Hightower and the Farpoint Council.

“The brave men who came forward to the authorities did so to turn in their weapons and to share information. They are not to be blamed for any actions taken against the United States or the naval base,” stated Hightower. “They came to turn in their weapons, which they took up in arms at the bequest of a charismatic leader, who tried to organize them into a fighting militia. However, they became convinced that he bad betrayed them and used them for his own benefit and, disillusioned, they came forward to seek amnesty and tell what they know.”

“While weapons similar to what these young men turned in do match weapons used in the attack against the American base, these men claim that other members of their group sold weapons to more militant activists, Topa and non-Topa, who paid a premium for them,” Hightower continued, “We urge the United States to not profile the members of the WET Topa tribes as militant aggressors. We will come forward with more information as best we can, but we again reiterate that these men, and their people, are not to blame.”

Hightower declined to provide more details at this time. However he did issue a statement politely requesting an end to US armed presence in Farpoint and a return to pre-attack conditions, promising additional police presence. Other council members seemed to bristle at the commissioner’s remarks but did not openly contradict their police chief.

Bodies of Missing Children Discovered

MILE investigators, on special orders from the Minister, increased their search efforts and, to the horror of the parents of Tomas DePaolo and Enrico Pima, discovered the bdies of the two boys late this afternoon.

Deep sea divers find the bodies of the boys weighted down to the bottom of the water some 20 yards from shore. Initial forensics lead the investigators to believe the two boys were stabbed and then drowned. Police now classify the case as murder.

Capt. Igor Tretiakov Missing.

Capt. Igor Tretiakov failed to report for mandatory assignment as the Eutopian military raised its alert level in response to American actions.

There are no clues at this time to his disappearance, but police have not ruled out foul play.

Guards Name Blade! as Last Person to Visit Hartwell

Rumors abound as to the mysterious disappearance of Lt. Gen. Hartwell from police custody last week. However, guards questioned at the minimum security facility claim that he was visited by Presidential advisor Blade! hours before his disappearance. Security logs back up this claim.

“Lt. Dan, he had seemed kind of down and nervous,” said prison guard Bubba Forrest, “Until his visit from Mr. Blade! that is. Then he seemed a lot better. He even got some from the minister and he just giggle and laughed as he wrote back, he sure did.”

There have been no developments in Hartwell’s case since his disappearance and there are wild rumors and speculation that he has left the country.

SIC Asset Public Auction Coming to a Close

Twenty four hours remain before the government liquidates the last remaining assets of Smith International Corporation. Deadlines were extended in light of the recent black-outs and the terrorist attack on the US Naval Base and subsequent US military response.

Interested parties may place sealed bids on these assets with the legal administrator of the trust established by the judgment. (OOC: PM heagarty with a bid. But you better have the money if you are bidding. ;) .

ECB takes previous government to task,
issues dire warnings

Eutopia City (eps) – Presenting the Eutopian Central Bank's fiscal report for Term 4 and economic forecast for Term 5 at a press conference in the nation’s capital earlier today, ECB Chairman Arun Rao blasted last term’s government for its failure to produce a budget. “Eutopia’s economy faces serious problems, and the inability of last term’s government to provide fiscal and economic leadership has made things worse,” charged a visibly aggravated Rao, noting that the government’s continuing failure to renegotiate NAFA contributed to the now disastrous state of Eutopia's fisheries.

rr.jpg

ECB-Chairman Arun Rao

ECB-representatives also suggested in no uncertain terms that the previous government’s inattention to fiscal matters acted as a significant deterrent to foreign investment in Eutopia. Says Alan Parsons, ECB Director of Foreign Investments: “Frankly, at this juncture, we need every foreign investment ducat we can get. We hope this government will not repeat the mistakes of the last one, and will refrain from further undermining Eutopia’s standing in the global market.”

On a more positive note, the ECB-report points out that the previous government's decision to buy up cheap Canadian lumber flooding the Eutopian market has so far averted a major decline in the forestry industry. However, the ECB does not view this strategy as viable in the long term. “What we need is either a diplomatic breakthrough, or the implementation of protective measures. Either way, we need a solution, and we need it fast,” states ECB Vice-Chair Claire-Marie Turgot, emphasizing that the forestry industry may otherwise follow the fisheries into a downward spiral.

Regarding the latter, the ECB-report strikes an alarming note: if nothing is done to protect Eutopia’s ailing fisheries, their complete collapse appears imminent. In excess of 70,000 citizens have already lost their jobs in the fishing industries over the last two terms; that number may well increase to 150,000 if no measures are taken. “You may say, well, it’s only a small part of the labour force, but the economic impact - on the food industry, shipyards, and other sectors of the economy - will be significant,” warns Klaus Kinsky, ECB Director of Renewable Resources.

The ECB report points out that the decline of the fishing industries further compounds negative developments in the regional economies of Nueva Rioja, the WET, and Jacobia. "Nueva Rioja and the WET have weak economies to begin with, and urgently needed additional regional development funds from the government to bolster them. However, last term's government chose to do nothing," chides Rao.

In Jacobia, the decline of the fisheries coincides with a continuing crisis of the coal industry; the latter has seen unemployment in some parts of Dunwich, Eutopia's coal-mining capital, rise to 24 percent. The coal industry crisis is due mainly to low prices for coal on the international market, which the ECB attributes to the prospect of cheap Iraqi oil exports.

James_Fess_Burns_Cy_Jones.jpg

Jacobia miners Stephen Harper and Peter MacKay worry about unemployment

In a fact sheet released at the press conference in addition to its official report, the ECB points out that the economic future of the WET has become even more uncertain due to the recent entry of US-forces into Farpoint. According to best ECB-estimates, that presence has so far caused damages to public and private property in the neighbourhood of 7 million ducats. A continued presence of US-troops in Farpoint is expected to cost the Eutopian economy 2.5 million ducats per day.

HEADLINE: "C'est un outrage!" FRENCH CLOSE EMBASSY - TALKS THREATENED

The French government, as well as many international observers, were shocked by the recent hearing of French fisherman on charges of Piracy and Reckless Endangerment.

Though a Grand Jury found sufficient evidence to proceed with a criminal trial, and though the evidence of the case was laid out in the trial, the eccentric and elderly Judge Freendly seemed to ignore the actual charges leveled by the government.

Though operating under his rights to hear the case in a closed courtroom, the judge's verdict was termed by some as "confused" and "rambling", with criticism from the French even harsher.

"C'est un Outrage!" said the French Amassador to Eutopia, "Zees is an insult, an affront to ze open cooperation we have been trying to foster and ze trust and confidence we placed in Eutopia when we turned over zese criminals for trial! How can we trust Eutopia to negotiate ze fishing treaties when zey stab us in ze back like zis?"

In protest, the French Embassy in Eutopia closed its doors. France has threatened to host its own NAFA renegotiation conference, without extending an invitation to Eutopia, as a result of this ruling.

Public sentiment in Eutopia was mixed. While most citizens were happy that the fishermen were freed with what they believed a reasonable sentence, they were at a lack to make sense of the trial. With the exception of in the Latin Provinces, the French remain generally unpopular in Eutopia.

"While the public may not be too upset," said Witney University School of Law Dean Nicholas Genes, "sometimes what is popular is not always right. The law here is very clear, and it seems that only the application of the evidence should have been at debate. I think this speaks to the need for serious legal reform of the Eutopian judicial system."

Queen Maria Marches Toward Farpoint

Venturing forth from her royal estates, Queen Maria was seen in Jacobia, accompanied only by a band of admirers, stating her determination to "walk to Farpoint and end this nonsense".

Picture: Queen Maria
austin_screens_scanlines-2.jpg

The Queen stated "I have stood to invaders before, and if I am the only one who will stand up to these foreign dogs after they so brutally beat up loyal subjects like Per Rebecca Cook and shot Colonel Tretiakov as he tried to resist their unprovoked invasion, then so be it. I will let every drop of my royal blood spill before I let one more innocent Eutopian be slain!"

The Queen appeared to be carrying a vintage pistol from the 1950's. About twenty Eutopians of various walks of life accompanied her on her march.

She refused to answer any questions and said nothing else beyond her original statement.

Lt. General James Markinson Revealed as NERA Leader, Takes Own Life

In an uncomfortable bit of deja vu, yet another high ranking member of the Eutopia Military was found to be part of a paramilitary organization with suspicious motives.

James T. Markinson, former leader of the ERCP, CEO of Markinson International Companies, and Lt. General in the Eutopian Army, emerged in a showdown of rival protesters in Farpoint as the masked leader of a band of soldiers from the NERA.

Markinson had made headlines earlier for his bold rescue attempt of slain Soldiers of God leader Charles DeSpirit.

Though police presence at the protest was abundant (MILE representatives state their desire was to prevent any violence), the NERA members boldy taunted the protestors and pulled out illegal military grade automatic weapons. Pre-placed rooftop snipers quickly arrested the men and their was unmasked revealing Markinson.

Chaos ensued moments later as the crowd was tear-gassed and shots were fired. There appear to be no deaths and only one citizen seriously wounded.

Markinson was imprisoned for questioning and protested his incarceration and lack of access to legal or spiritual counsel. He was found dead in his cell earlier this morning with a note declaring his refusal to compromise his anti-communist comrades and his willing all his remaining MIC assets (which were being held in a blind trust pending his retirement from the military) to the Soldiers of God.

Autopsy reports indicate Markinson died of Cyanide poisoning. Foul play is being investigated, though the Markinson's handwritten letter suggests a suicide. Markinson had received a baked cake earlier in the day, as is allowed through police policy for those being held in medium or lighter security. Earlier in the day a police guard suffered minor injuries to his mouth eating a cake intended for the incarcerated Ms. Rebecca Cook that was found to be containing small blades.
No word on whether or not the policy of allowing foods and other packages for prisoners will continue.

Body of Colonel Tretiakov Discovered - US Security Tapes Leaked
The body of Colonel Tretiakov was buried this past weekend in a private ceremony by his family. Though his family opted out of the traditional military honors afforded to someone of the Colonel's rank, he was buried with a Eutopian flag draped over his closed coffin.
The family has been unwilling to cooperate with investigators as to the cause of the Colonel's death, and will state only that he was murdered but that they do not have anyone to file charges against. Rumors persist that he was involved with shady underground organizations, a claim the men under his command angrily deny but which his family only shrugs off.
However, controversy surrounding the death continues as note composed of letters cut from a newspaper accompanied a series of photographs sent to Newslink Media outlets. The note claims that, "In response to slanderous accounts by The Gazette and other Eutopian newspapers, the following evidence is being leaked."
The photos appear to be taken by American security cameras or by instruments aboard the Harriers or assault helicopters used in pursuit of the base attackers.

At least four distinct groups can be identified in the photos, mostly Topa but with some Anglo & Franco Eutopians among them, throwing molotov cocktails. One of them is armed with an AK-47.

Another photo reveals a man who appears to be of Norse Descent hurling a sophisticated electronic item over a wall that would appear to be the one on the American base leveled by an explosive device.

More photos show a fleeing jeeps, including one firing an RPG right at the camera.
A face in one of the jeeps appears to be that of Captain Tretiakov.

The American press representative appeared stunned when confronted by the photos, but not surprised by their contents. She had, however, no official comment.

Police Investigation into Boys' Death Yields Mystery
Isabella police, searching for clues in the deaths of Tomas DePaolo and Enrico Pima Buen Puerto, have made an unusual find.

Further combing of the rocky area leads the police to find a crate buried in a hole some 30 yards from the sea. Police are not sure if the crate, some four feet by four feet, is related to the boys’ disappearance. Local police were unwilling to attempt opening the crate until explosives and forensics experts had completed their examination of the crate, found within 200 yards of the boys' weighted-down bodies.

Parents of Pima and DePaolo, and many residents of Buen Puerto have begun a letter writing campaign chastising the government for failing to find the perpetrators of this crime. Over 1,200 names have been collected so far.

BUSINESS: Closing the Door on the Legacy of Smith

The government completed liquidation of hard assets while continuing to seek out hidden assets of Roger Smith, the rogue military officer who attempted to seize power in an aborted coup earlier in the year.

Though the bulk of Smith's assets appear to have been wired overseas, Smith International Companies (SIC) properties were seized and liquidated by the government in order to pay out a civil suit award from the case Teano vs. SIC.

Public bidding on multiple assets is now complete and, while the final numbers are still being tallied due to the sale of a wealth of smaller items and properties, the major properties were awarded below:

  • - SIC Headquarters and Regional Offices - Ð12 million, (Anonymous bidder)

    - Smith General Contractors & Construction (SGCC) - Ð 120 million, Glenfiddich & Son

    - The Eutopian Times - Ð 4.5million, Le Compagnie de Renard Rouge

    - The Eutopian Market - Ð 1.0001 million, Blade! Family Holding and Manufacturing Conglomerate (Group one - New Lancaster(2), Eutopia City(1), & Hurteau(1)

    - The Eutopian Market - Ð 2 million, Gulp & Blow (Group two - New Lancaster(1), Eutopia City(1), Witney (1)& Douglas(2)

    - The Eutopian Market - Ð 2.2 million, Le Lion de la Nourriture (Group three - Chateavallon(1), Fort-au-Francais(1),Buen Puerto (1)& Nueva Cordoba(1)

    - MidAtlantic Television - Ð 2.5 million, Le Compagnie de Renard Rouge

    - UDA Political Offices - Ð 500 thousand, Soldiers of God.

Approximately Ð 150 million is expected from this first round of liquidations, to be divided as directed under the terms of the Teano vs. SIC lawsuit. More funds are hoped for if Smith's overseas assets can be recovered.

Strange Dwellings found on Gaiatech Tree Farming Property

Not long after announcing added security measures, corporate official of Gaiatech announced the discovery of some strange shelters deep within their Northwest forest acreage.

Police have been called in to investigate these structures, as Gaiatech officials wisely called the authorities before risking contaminating any crime scene or risking injury from booby-traps.

Le Compagnie de Renard Rouge Announce Jobs for Western Saharans

By means of fax and e-mail, Le Compagnie de Renard Rouge announced today that it would work to provide jobs for all the displaced Western Saharans who have be awarded official refugee status by President Langley.

The holdings of Le Compagnie de Renard Rouge are quite diversified, especially given recent acquisitions from auction of MIC and SIC properties, but the non-MIC and non-SIC organizations are located primarily within the Latin provinces.

The CEO, Per Renard Rogue himself, personally guaranteed good wages and good opportunities for these "poor victims of political oppression" and pledged significant charitable aid for their benefit.

QUEEN MARIA, PERSONAL GUARD, ARRIVE AT FARPOINT, WITHIN KILOMETERS FROM U.S. ROAD BLOCK

Queen Maria, and entourage of 650 armed members of the Royal Guard Society have arrived at Farpoint and are approaching the American roadblock.

The Queen is brandishing a pistol and shouting "Leave our shores! Leave our shores!".

The Americans have apparently gotten advance word of the approaching mob. Marine Colonel Marvin Lee awaits the Queen as a representative of the US government, but they are reinforcing their position in the anticipation of violence.

Over a dozen American CH-46 Sea Knights have taken to the air and are hovering over the Main Street road block, the marines behind the barricades are armed with machine guns, grenade launchers, and similar combat equipment.

Bradley fighting vehicles are carrying more urban-combat troops from the base to Main Street to reinforce the troops at the barricade and to take up other strategic positions in the other.

US Base Repairs 85% Complete
(From US Military News Service)
Damage caused by the unprovoked terrorist attack against the United States Naval Base at Farpoint is being repaired at a steady rate. New walls, surveillance equipment, and other security measures should be completely installed by the end of the month.

The United States Government thanks the Eutopian MILE and the administration for their cooperation to date.

US President Walker & US Senator Blowerd Feud over Eutopian Policy

Bellicose US Senator Blowerd drew the attention of the international media when, on a routine "fact-finding" mission to Cancun, Mexico he accused US President Walker of "being the biggest sell-out since President Williams leased out the Lincoln Bedroom". The Senator then proceeded to make several colorful remarks about his favorite topic, the international security threat posed by the island nation of Eutopia.

President Walker's response was somewhat muted, claiming only that until he had a chance to talk to Blowerd directly he would not comment on hearsay. However he defended US action in Eutopia and had mild praise for the Langley administration and the cooperation received to date.

Shockingly to some, he went a step further and hinted that a "demonstrated commitment to fight terrorism" and a "crackdown on the cultivation of terrorist culture" could result in US economic aid for such measures. However, when pressed, the President would give no details and said he was overdue at the ranch.

Whether there will be a warming of US-Eutopian relations remains to be seen, but some credit the President's position to a game of tug-of-war between administration allies of Blowerd and the Pentagon and a more moderate wing represented by Colin Powell's successor, former National Security Advisor Candy Lisa Rose, who happens to belong to the pro-Eutopia camp.

MILE Authorities Discover NERA HQ, Two Officers Injured in Blast

Police investigators located the secret HQ of the National Eutopian Republican Army in a secret raid last night, following the capture of the paramilitary group's bold appearance during the Farpoint Main Street Protests that led to the capture of James Markinson.

Whether the NERA had been tipped off to their arrival or whether the building had been long abandoned and booby-trapped, a devastating blast ripped through the warehouse in the St. Brendanstown industrial district, injuring two officers and creating a blaze that took fire fighters four hours to bring under control.

Police fear all records or useful evidence against the NERA must be lost. The blast seemed to have been set using mass quantities of C-4 and other high explosives.

Investigation into Boys' Death Uncovers Cache of Weapons
Isabella police, searching for clues in the deaths of Tomas DePaolo and Enrico Pima Buen Puerto, have opened the mysterious underwater crate found not far from where the bodies of the boys were recovered.

With the help of national demolitions experts, who searched the crate for any possible explosives or traps, local police open the crate and find about 25 Uzi submachine guns and a whole lot of plastic explosives. The crates contents were wrapped in newspaper.

“I can’t read the writing on the newspaper, it looks Chinese to me,” the police chief says. The matter is now passed to Federal authorities.

Massive Land Deal Liquidates of Portion of Blade! Family Assets
A relatively isolated 150 acres of land in the mountains west of Eutopia City exchanged hands as former Supreme Justice of the High Court Blade! transferred ownership of the property, estimated to be worth Ð 1.5 million, to an unknown party.

"This is a private matter, and the secrecy of the new owner must be respected," said Rutger VanHoeveun, Register of Deeds for the New Schleswig province.

MECT Welcomes International Football Star Pepe'!

MECT Vasco IKK named two special initiatives: the "ConnecTopia" plan to provide internet access to all Eutopians, and all star effort to bring Eutopia into the international sports community.

Following up Eutopia's acceptance into the 2004 Olympic games, Eutopia will make a major effort to be accepted into FIFA and other international sports associations. To head this effort, the Minister has recruited international football star Pepe' to represent Eutopia overseas and to build excitement for the program here in Eutopia.

"I heartily endorse this product or service," said Pepe', captain of two World Cup teams and world-recognized ambassador for the sport of football.

Obituary: Roger Smith

One time corporate mogul, army commander, attorney, and political gadabout Roger Smith died this morning, passing away after months in a coma he entered following injuries suffered in a failed coup attempt.

The domestic assets of his holdings, Smith International Companies (SIC) have been liquidated in auction and have resulted in approximately Ð 160 million for the funds established by the civil law suit award from the case Teano vs. SIC.

Smiths assets are reputed to be even greater but authorities have been unable to track them through the myriad overseas and off-shore accounts where Smith hid his money.

ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON PRESIDENT LANGLEY FOILED!

In a powder keg of potential violence, where President Jacob Langley arrived at Farpoint Main Street to confront Queen Maria and her Royal Guard over their resistance to the American presence and control of Farpoint, a flash that could have ignited civil war was extinguished by the quick action of ten Eutopian marines under the command of Vice Admiral Henrik Tulp.

President Langley had traveled to Farpoint as confrontation between the Queen's armed supporters and the American marines seemed imminent. The Queen protested the American presence and declared that such foreign occupiers should be driven from our shores.

Inside a compound erected by the Royalists, President Langley demanded an audience with the Queen, whom, unknown to the President, had already departed Farpoint in a fit of disgust, escorted by John Baner and his elite officers.

However, a mysterious assailant, disguised as a medical relief worker, took advantage of the chaos at the scene and made his way into the compound.

When confronted by a member of the Royal Guard, the mystery man yelled, "Death to the Royalists! Death to tyranny!" and shot the guardsmen, three times, slaying him.

He then pulled open his shirt to reveal that he was wired with explosives.

Holding his detonator high for everyone to see, he proclaimed, "There is no greater thing than that which I do now! No greater gesture a man can make! What I do now, I do for the Most Enlightened Order of the Revolution. We shall establish a Marxist state on Eutopia , we shall guarantee the freedom of the non-Anglo population of Eutopia, and we shall drive all tyrants, American, Royalists, and their fascist Langlian lapdogs into the seas! Death to President Langley!"

Witnesses dispute exactly what happened next, but it is believed that the marine guard protecting the president sprang into action and with precision shooting worthy of Olympian marksmanship shot the man in the arms and hand holding the detonator, rending him unable to hold on to it and sending it caroming away into a ditch.

The assassin got fell and got off three shots before the Marines' return fire, and some fire by the Royal Guard, terminated the would-be killer, who's last words were a cry of "Revolution!"

The President was stunned to discover that the assassin was none other than the former METF under President O'Floinn, John Liep of the ESRP. Many believe Liep grew bitter after his dismissal, but friends and party members expressed shock and disbelief that he would have go so far as to join the MEOR.

President Langley was unharmed in the melee, but one Marine sergeant was injured as well as two members of the Royal Guard Society. Royal Guard Corporal Alexis McKeaton died from injuries sustained when Liep first attacked.

QUEEN MARIA BLASTS GOVERNMENT. DEMANDS RETURN OF THE MONARCHY

Far from the violence of the assassination attempt of President Langley, Queen Maria took to the airwaves to passionately denounce the government of the NPP coalition, and accused it of selling out to the "American Imperialists" as a way to prop up his own failing administration.

During her address, the Queen condemned the increased influence of foreigners over "true Eutopians" and noted the last two elected Presidents had been American. "It is conquest through immigration," the Queen declared, "And we have all gone along quietly, always welcoming and accepting, until now American jets roar over our skies, and their agents stalk our lands at night. We are living under foreign occupation and we must take our nation back."

The Queen called upon all citizens to demand a public referendum on the restoration of the monarchy, so that "Eutopia can be returned to Eutopians."

"It's obvious that the wealth and power of these American opportunists, and our own people's sad abdication of the political process, must be balanced somehow, and the best way to do that is to return the monarchy as a check upon the President and his power-hungry executive branch."

The Queen called upon all Eutopians to resist the American presence as well, but stressed that they should only use nonviolent accepted methods of protest, and she denounced those that would take up arms against fellow-Eutopians, "even Americans with Eutopian credentials". She said she herself would take a more active role in the nonviolent protests once the campaign to restore the monarchy had been organized.

Eco-Fascists Release Photos to the Press

Mysterious photos arrived at most Eutopian news outlets claiming to be from the United Eco-Fascists. These photos show images of individuals in the military garb of the EUtopian Army, supported by Topan irregulars armed with heavy mortars, in various scenes: marching through the old-growth hardwoods of the WET, loading their mortars, the destruction of an Eco-Fascist village by mortars and many of them fleeing into the forest as Eco-Fascists return fire with rifles, bows, and arrows.

The photos are accompanied by pictures taken by independent news sources of the abandoned battle site, with the expended Eutopian military ordnance and by a clipped press statement from Farpoint Police Commissioner Hightower, announcing his confirmation that the EUtopian Army was behind forays into WET backwoods territory where they were assaulting Eco-Fascist Compounds. He cited first hand forensic evidence.

Commissioner Hightower could not be reached for comment due to the recovery efforts to secure Farpoint in the wake of the Presidential assassination attempt.

Locust Swarms Plague the Island, Group Credits Divine Wrath

MHES officials have documented at least four mysterious swarms of locusts, which have plagued local residents in areas never accustomed to the appearance of these insects. Most notably the office of the MECT was shut down for days while health authorities investigated and removed the insects. MHES officials have identified the insects as swamp dwelling inhabits of the lowlands surrounding the Baztan and Conder River valleys in Nueva Roja and New Lancaster respectively.

Picture: Locust swarm outside the MECT office
_401128_locustbop150.jpg

Migrations from these areas seem possible, but are, as of yet, unexplained by the MHES.

However, leaders of the Soldiers of God, posit their own answer, that the locust swarms are a plague set upon Eutopia by an angry god seeking vengeance over Eutopia's "embracing of wicked policies". Kurt Wagster, leader of the Soldiers of God pointed to the locust swarms and the "mysterious plague afflicting our Latin provinces" as signs that "God has chosen to punish us, to turn us away from our sins. While some might react in horror, we must remember that He loves us, and this is for own good, much like a parent punishing a child". He cited Eutopia's recently enacted laws on homosexuality as the primary reason for these unexplained events.

Police Discover Abandoned Rebel Bases
As part of a nationwide sweep of potential rebel strongholds, MILE police agents have uncovered three abandoned safe-housed believed to have been used by the MEOR in recent months. All seemed to have been empty for sometime.

A weapon recovered at one safe-house near Castries seemed to match the ballistics of guns used in the recent robbery of a grocery store. No further information has been revealed about these investigations, but a MILE spokesperson claims the "crackdown will continue".

Latin Provinces Stunned by Quarantine
Fear and confusion broke out throughout the Latin provinces with the announcement of a quarantine by the government. The steps were taken to combat the mysterious flu-like virus that has hospitalized dozens and led to one death.

A televised statement by MHES Amric Al'Aeshir helped calm some residents who feared terrorist, or American biological attack. However many businesses and workers in these provinces expressed confusion and anger over the quarantine, calling it "overreaction" by the government and claiming thousands of ducats in lost productivity from interrupted business and commercial travel and transport.

MHES officials state that the quarantine is necessary to protect lives.

STYLE & CULTURE: Eutopian Government Official and Socialite Blade! Accosted by Stalkers

BFC industrial magnate and advisor to the President Blade! foiled attempts by the paparazzi or to stalkers to follow him through the streets of New Bengal.

It is widely rumored that Per Blade! and the Princess have been trying to conceive a child. However, Per Blade!'s personal life is apparently not open for investigation.
BFC security personnel sprung into action to confront two pursuers using big megaphones, cell-phone cameras, and harmless "crazy string".

Picture: MILE file photo of the stalkers

When the two mystery men followed Blade! into a back alley, the security men intervened shouting "Why are you following government personnel!? Are you a foreign spy?! Per Blade! run!!!" The stalkers' pictures were taken and forwarded to the MILE for stalking charges, while they were rendered confused and unable to flee under webs of "crazy string"

Attempts to reach Per Blade were met with notice that the Chief of Staff has taken a leave of absence from his office over the weekend, and indicated he should return within the week, and that he is away to deal with family issues.

FINANCE: Loans Available to Commercial Shipping Concerns

Le Compagne de Renard Rouge announced today that it would attempt to help bail out Eutopia's failing fishing industry by loaning money to local fishermen and businessmen to convert failed fishing ventures into small maritime shipping companies. Such companies would receive generous loans from LCRR, and in exchange would offer LCRR discount shipping services until such time as the loans are repaid. The arrangement has been negotiated through the consulting services of firm, Anzaldua & Associates, and interested parties are invited to inquire therein. No companies have yet been formed but spokesmen for Per Anzaluda state that this could be a great opportunity for the right enterprising entrepreneur.

FARPOINT MAYOR, POLICE COMMISSIONER, ACCUSE GOVERNMENT OF MASSIVE COVER-UP IN ECO-FASCIST DEBACLE!

"This has gone on long enough!" said a defiant Mayor Thorsbeard of Farpoint, appearing at a press conference with Police Commissioner Hightower and over twenty Topa who had been in protective custody since before the American occupation, "We must demand an end to the madness threatening civil war in our nation, and appeal to the Americans, with whom we live and work with on an almost daily basis, to end their cooperation with the corrupt Eutopian military."

Police Commissioner Hightower took the stage and continued to denounce the government. "I have been saying for several terms now that a conspiracy existed within our government. We TOLD you that the military was behind the assault on Farpoint, and, sure enough, once he tried to roll down Main Street in a tank, you finally pieced together that Roger Smith was behind it. We've also been saying for several terms now that the military was behind forays into WET backwoods territory where they were assualting Eco-Fascist Compounds. I provided first hand forensic evidence and this was ignored. I made public reports intercepted from the government's Security and Analysis Wing (SAW) and still the government failed to move, claiming to have solved the problem once Smith was arrested. Now, however, we have the evidence we need."

Tom Askanzi of the Kree'law tribe stepped forward and then revealed why he and his compatriots had turned themselves in.

"Everyone up here was trained to lead a platoon. We were recruited by Lt. General Dan Hartwell, the MDIA at the time. He told us we could make a difference, that we would go to the WET to infiltrate the militant Topan movement, and see if we could stir it up or gather intel. He was so persuasive. We thought this was a real opportunity to prove how patriotic we true Topa really are, and how we love our country. We used our training under Hartwell to rob arms depots, and to arm our own militia forces, as well as some others who could help stir it up as ordered by the MDIA."

Picture: Tom Askanzi Poses with Weapons Seized from Naval Depot, and Trained to Use by Lt. Gen. Hartwell

460939.jpg

"That's when we stumbled upon the Eco-Fascists," added another Kree'Law, Jim Ak-Biru. "We didn't know who they were but we know they didn't belong here. They reacted pretty hostile towards us, pelting us with rocks and sticks, so we set off a few flares and drove them away. But this was our first real challenge, so we came back, this time with heavier weapons, and searched until we found the enemy base and leveled it."

"In retrospect," said Askanzi, "It's clear that our actions were very wrong. But at the time, Hartwell, and his partners, made us believe. They made us believe in the truth and the righteousness of our cause."

"But that all died," said Ak-Biru, "after his capture. We were cut-off, abandoned, with out any escape plan. No orders, no permissions, just a bunch of poor Topan scape goats, who would take the fall for the attacks on the Eco-Fascists. That's when we saw through Hartwell. We all conferred and decided to come clean. But shortly after it was reported by the news that we were granted amnesty by the Farpoint Council, that's when Hartwell broke out of jail. Then the Americans attacked. You can understand why we've been in hiding every since."

Mayor Thorsbeard closed the press conference with a fierce denouncement of the government. "The government actively recruited their own private, off-the-books army, and sent them here to infiltrate our province and to sow chaos and dissent. Then, rather than clean up their mess, they start a feud with the Eco-Fascists, and now have engaged the Americans in an all out attempt to wipe out the Eco-Fascists. We've seen the photos released in the media, and now we have the very men recruited, trained, and sent out to do the government's dirty work. But we're to believe the Eco-Fascists are the enemy? The men and women of Farpoint and the WET have to eke out what lives we can in this neglected community. We will NOT tolerate the Langley administration carrying on this tradition of private little wars against political opponents while it is OUR people on the front lines!"

He concluded, "We beg the Americans to end this mad quest, to return to their base, and to let us conduct our business ourselves. We call upon the Eutopian people to call for an end to this madness, and to hold the national government accountable for their actions. And we forgive these brave men, who risked all to come here to lay down their arms, confess their crimes, and seek peace. Let they be an example to us all."

CIA CAPTURES DR. SVEIN DE VLAMINK - MEOR MASTER OF PROPAGANDA

CIA agents, in a bold raid of an abandoned industrial district in Neuwestbaden discovered the secret HQ of the Most Enlightened Order of the Revolution. Within two hours they parlayed evidence recovered from the abandoned HQ into colossal manhunt, and succeeded in capturing the former ESRP presidential candidate and national assembly member within miles of Cuba's international waters.

Representatives from the United States government refused to answer questions, but issued only this statement: "Today is a great day for our fight against terrorism. Today we have decapitated the MEOR and brought to justice a despicable terrorist responsible for the deaths of countless American and Eutopian citizens during his reign of terror. De Vlamink will be held at Camp Zed in the US Naval Base at Guantanmo Bay, Cuba.

US Farpoint Base Commander, Marine Colonel Marvin Lee reportedly commented, "Well if he wanted to get to Cuba so badly, let's see how much he likes an extended stay." However, Marine Corps press officers deny their commander made such a remark.

Attempts to reach ESRP leader Josephus Locke for comment proved unsuccessful. His whereabouts are unknown.

COMMONALITY PARTY LEADER SURFACES IN CUBA

Ironically, while US intelligence forces swarmed in to intercept De Vlaminck, only miles away did an unnoticed craft make its way to the Cuban shore carrying the highly controversial leaders of the Commonality Party, Deaghaidh, who had been missing for months.

Cuban officials welcomed Deaghaidh to their island, and promised him sanctuary from the United States or any "enemies of freedom or the people".

Per Deaghaidh, accompanied by Eutopian industrialist Patric Connel, were treated as guests of stae and Deaghaidh oromised that he had an important message to deliver to the world, just as soon as he recovered from his harrowing journey. Per Connel had no comment at this time.

United Nations to Send Observers to WET: Americans Complete Repairs

In response to an invitation by the MDIA Charles Morgan, the United Nations has declared that they wills end official observers to the WET to determine the true nature of the American occupation and to recommend any action to the UN Security Council. Some delegates expressed skepticism of the move and credited it to general anti-Americanism, but the majority hailed it as necessary and prudent.

Meanwhile, US Marine Colonel Marvin Lee announced that base repairs were 99% complete and that the US military presence in the streets of Farpoint, and their military enforced curfews would end if the MILE or Eutopian military would take over this role. He noted that there has been optimistic talk from Washington about a proposal from MDIA Morgan that the Americans are considering. He reiterated, however, that search and destroy patrols and aerial fly-overs would continue until the security threat was officially reduced. He pointed to the capture of MEOR leader De Vlaminck as a significant step in winning the war on terror.

Chief of Staff Blade! Missing: Feared Dead?

Though government officials refuse comments, Newslinks sources confirm that Chief of Staff, and national Socialite Blade! and his wife Princess Francesca are missing, and that their yacht was found abandoned off the Isabella coast.

Family members have refused to speculate on the disappearance of the couple and dismiss foul play or any accident.

"I am sure the two just wanted some privacy," said Blade!'s major domo Raj Krishnasami, "they've been hounded like crazy and I know they've been trying to find some time for more...um...intimate relations as the Princess tries to conceive."

However, Krishnasami did admit that he had not heard from Per Blade! in almost a week.

Topa Man Found Beaten

A Farpoint citizen was found beaten and unconscious on the side of the road this morning. The man, John Al-Kud A'Rai, was in the news not too long ago as the cousin of one Elizabeth Quara A'Rai, the bride of American Lt. George Hanson. She, her cousin John, and several family members claimed she had been raped by Lt. Hanson, setting off a national protests and widespread unrest in the WET.

John Al-Kud A'Rai was questioned by the police, but could not identify his assailants as he was attacked from behind. He has reported his wallet missing, along with a watch and several credit cards.

Minister IKK Missing from Eutopia General Hospital

Minister Vasco IKK was found missing today from his isolated hospital room at Eutopia General Hospital where he was being treated for the unidentified virus that has broken out in the Latin provinces. Hospital administrators were frustrated and perplexed by the disappearance.

"This is a hospital, not a jail, so it's not inconceivable that he just walked out," said EGH spokesperson Luc Bloedrai, "We see him in this videotape getting up and walking to the bathroom, but then it goes dead."

Anyone with information about the MECT should report it to authorities immediately.

MDIA Morgan Accused of Communist Ties in Internet Prank
Conservative activists all over Eutopia have been receiving mysterious spam e-mail from an anonymous Yahoo account, called CPE@yahoo.com. Representatives from such organizations as the Soldiers of God, the CRE, ERO, CC, EEP, & NPP student leaders at all the major universities, and many press outlets all received the following message:
Dear Comrades,

The Communist Party of EUtopia has found a new leader, who is to lead our previously underground organization. Our new leader, Per Minister Morgan of the MDIA has announced he will run for President on our ticket next term, and has already begun important work on our behalf:

We would like to congratulate our new leader on this day, when he both accepted our nomination and demonstrated his dedication to our cause by putting forth in the National Assembly, a bill that would strip the holdings and properties of so called landholding oppressive class. Not only will the industrial barons, and those decended from aristorcratic backgrounds have to turn over their private property to the state, for the collectivized good of EUtopia's people, but the Minister has assured us that he can then turn over much of the land to be developed into logging and mining camps to boost those industries that the actual workers depend on.

The landholdings of the so called upper and middle classes shall be struck down and collectivized! No longer shall we be terrorized by environmentalists and royal Topan preserves in our quest for industrialization!

~Viva the Workers!
~Viva the Farmers!
~Viva Per Morgan!

Comrades, pass this on!

MDIA spokespeople state that they cannot speak for Per Morgan's personal political beliefs, but would be surprised if this announcement were true. Likewise, calls to the NPP for comment received no answer as most staff were off attending one of the many NAFL games played today.

Linda Park Cheers Release of Friend Rebecca Cook

In social news today, Linda Park, actress best known for her recent roles on TV's Star Trek, was seen celebrating the release of controversial National Assembly delegate Rebecca Cook from a military stockade.

"I am so happy Becky's back," said an overjoyed Park, maybe now things will get back to normal."

Cook seemed to be keeping a low profile, especially when two marines appeared at the doors of BrewTOPIA, but she became more enthusiastic after they left.

Rumors that Cook still faces trial in military and/or civilian courts have yet to be answered.

International Football Star Pepe Tours Eutopia, Promoting Sports

International Football Star Pepe toured many of the northern provinces this week (avoiding the quarantines of the Latin provinces) to promote Eutopian involvement in International sports, taking particular time to push for Eutopian admission into FIFA.

"I love this game. It is a part of me and it should be part of this nation," he said to a crowd of adoring fans. "I know you find American football popular, but we must embrace true football as well. We must teach it to our youth and we must compete against the world."

Pepe's tour is part of a program by the MECT announced shortly before the Minister's illness. When asked how he, himself, was feeling, Peper answered, "Happy to be locust-free!"

SPEAKER GLASSER ASSUMES ACTING PRESIDENCY AMIDST PROTESTS

In what some have called a "crisis of leadership" with MDIA Morgan rumored to have declared "I'm in charge here" at the Presidential Palace and the whereabouts of Eutopia's elected leadership nowhere to be found, the High Court moved to approve the ascension of Dr. Jonathon Glasser (MD), Speaker of the 5th National Assembly.

While the ascension of the Speaker, who had missing for sometime himself, was cheered by many who feared a "headless government", not everyone was as supportive of the Speaker's rise to the Presidency. Bands of Langley Loyalists turned out to protest the opening of his presidential office. They insist that with President Langley's brief absences does not justify the legal definition of "vacating the office" and call upon the High Court to refuse to acknowledge Glasser's authority.

Further, smaller, but more dedicated crowds of Latin Eutopians, union members, immigrants, and Western Saharan refugees have demanded that Vice President and MECT Vasco IKK be named as the rightful leaders, and claim his "illness" and disappearance to be part of a government plot to push the popular young leader from the presidency.

In his short time in charge, Glasser has held cabinet meetings, named interim ministers, and even critics have noted his dedication to the job.

* EXCLUSIVE *

BUEN PUERTOLESE HAIL GLASSER FOR SELFLESS HEROISM

Despite the controversy over his ascension, there are some in Eutopia who are hailing Dr. Glasser as a hero, and have come forward in this NEWSLINK exclusive to reveal the reasons for his mysterious absence.

Though known for a hard hitting style broadcast journalism, few Eutopians figured Dr. Jonathon Glasser as the type to engage in fisticuffs or launch into risky ventures. However many will be surprised to learn that their new Acting President, risked his life in a quest for answers that led him far from the land he now governs.

Inspired by the gut-wrenching tale of the brutal murder of two Buen Puerto boys, and the lack of follow-up into their deaths by local police and the MILE, Dr.Glasser pledged his personal support to aid the families, and organized "Sea Watch" patrols of concerned citizens monitoring the traffic in and out of the Isabella sea port town.

He also led an investigation of the discarded evidence recovered by the police, found not far from the site of the slain children: 25 uzi submachine guns and several pounds of plastic explosives. Analyzing the packing, he discerned that the contents were wrapped in newspaper, a North Korean newspaper.

On a routine "Sea Watch" patrol, local fishermen positively identified the mysterious Algerian freighter that had been seen in these waters months ago. Though the small civilian boat and its crew could not take on the much larger freighter, Glasser and his companions were able to discover and record the ship's registration and other identifying marks.

Accompanying local families to Algeria, Glasser helped trace the ships back to a black marketer, who, when offered a substantial financial "incentive" by the families in exchange for information, revealed that the ship had been retained to bring a North Korean cargo of weapons into the country, purchased by a "undisclosed revolutionary organization".

When the smuggler refused to provide any additional information, witnesses claim Glasser became extremely aggressive, and with "understandable" force, coerced the Algerian into revealing that two smugglers were spotted by the two boys, and killed them to avoid discovery before fleeing to the freighter. Those men, for jeopardizing the mission, were then reportedly killed themselves.

Finally reaching some closure, if not justice, the Buen Puerto families and Glasser returned to Eutopia aboard a commercial flight, which had to make an emergency landing in the Canary Islands after a bomb threat to the plane was reported. Following this threat, Glasser and his party took slower passage by sea to return home.

While Glasser had not revealed any of these actions, MILE immigration authorities confirm via his passport key elements of this story, and the Buen Puerto community is hailing him as a reluctant hero.

US Forces Prepare to Leave Farpoint City Limits - Question New Administration

It was with a noticeably cooler attitude that American Base Commander Marvin Lee announced that repairs to the Farpoint base, were all but complete and the American "security perimeter" in Farpoint was being removed. He commented that American forces remain on alert and will continue their scheduled joint patrols with the Eutopian military until the end of the week. The USS Litton-Ingalls will remain at Farpoint for service, but the other members of the Amphibious Squadron Sixteen.will be returning to their original assignments.

Picture: US Armor Rolls down Lief Ave. toward the US Base

39071.jpg

The Americans pointed to the apparent destruction of the MEOR as a victory in their international war on terror, though they expressed some disappointment that some known terrorists remained at large.

Diplomatic messages from Washington, DC, however indicate that the American base remains on alert following "the questionable regime change" that has placed "noted Anti-American" Speaker Glasser into the Presidency. Critics of US President Walker used the event to bash the president for entrusting far too much support in Pro-American President Langley.

Further evidence of Eutopia's "unstable government" was offered by the Americans who, in one hand held up a treaty proposal from MDIA Charles Morgan to strengthen American presence in the region, and in the other a letter described as "ranting and bombastic" revoking his original proposed agreement, which the Americans were complying with, and the Eutopians were not.

The official American reaction to the cancellation notice was "confused due to evident mass instability in the US government" and a "commitment to hold up to our end of the bargain". They offered a "no comment" on the mental stability of the MDIA.

United Nations Observers Comment on WET & Captain Martinez

United Nations observers, in the WET in response to an invitation by the MDIA Charles Morgan, declared that everything seemed to be in order with the phased American withdraw from Farpoint. While questions exist over the American right of intervention, no violations of human rights were observed and the international peacekeepers announced they will be leaving this week.

However, in an unusual episode, a group of blue-helmeted observers were accosted by what appeared to be an "enraged African Eutopian", Dinka Umbatu, a Kongolese immigrant. He claimed that the Eutopian military was harboring war criminals and made scathing accusations about a Captain Roberto Martinez of the Eutopian Army Airborne Regiment.

The observers were not authorized to act or comment on the complaint, but promised it would be forwarded to the appropriate international agency.

Dr. DeVlamink Remains in US Custody in Guantanamo

After the bold capture of reputed MEOR leader Dr. Svein DeVlamink just outside of Cuban territorial waters, the CIA retains has custody of him at Camp Zed in the US Naval Base at Guantanmo Bay, Cuba.

US officials refuse to comment on DeVlamink's legal status or any information he might have shared with American interrogators. However fellow prisoners claim that he has frustrated them at every turn.

Queen Maria Begins Voter "Activation" Drive

Queen Maria announced a campaign to "activate" the many Eutopians registered and eligible to vote, but who have not pledged their support to a major political party, in a campaign to support reinstalling the monarchy.

The Queen, who is constitutionally prohibited from assuming the throne as a female, has clashed frequently with the elected government and has been moved to, in her words, "bring the truth to the people of Eutopia that their government has been bought and sold by those who have proven to be poor stewards of their authority."

She went on to claim that the only way to bring integrity back to government was to restore the monarchy as "a check on the chaotic imperfections evident in our current system, which cannot claim a stable leader".

Minister IKK Returned to Eutopia General Hospital

Minister Vasco IKK was returned to EGH today, after he was found by a Latin citizen in Nueva Rioja. His condition has been classified as "guarded, yet stable". Hospital administrators have credited his escape to chaos caused by an outbreak of the virus among members of the hospital support staff.

Word of his return has sparked the arrival of many papayas, the symbolic tribute paid by many grateful Latin Eutopians, immigrants, and Western Saharan Refugees to the MECT whom they credit for finally resolving a horrible impasse over the legal status of the refugees, who arrived during the term of President Murmurandus.

"We appreciate the gesture, but we're going to have to open a fruit stand" said EGH spokesperson Luc Bloedrai, "Minister IKK can only take food in liquid form, intravenously, so these papayas are going to waste, unless they are given away."

Latin Separatist Begins March to Central Province

Fadrique Martin De Lugo Guzman, Latino Socialistic Nationalist and separatist began a march to New Schleswig. He promised this will be a peaceful demonstration but will not reveal to the media his final destination or ultimate goal.

The charismatic radio host of host of Radio Libertad, has been joined by several followers for his march, and their mood seems festive and convivial. Colorful banners and energetic Latin-Eutopian music has been played along the route.

Lundgren Corp. Liquidated

Continuing to surprise observers, former MILE and Speaker for Life Jacob Lundgren announced, shortly after resigning at the two term Minister of Immigration and Law Enforcement that he was liquidating significant parts of Lundgren Corp. and retaining only his newspaper, The New Republican and his sports tavern.

Financial markets also took a hit at the securities sell off initiated by Per Lundgren, a huge investor in Eutopia's stock market, liquidated his entire portfolio for cash.

Observers can only speculate what Per Lundgren has in store for this sizable amount of capital. However, no one seemed surprised to see him sell off the hapless NAFL Buen Puerto Sting Rays, where attendance and public support has been down following a horrible season and local criticism over his job handling the deaths of two local boys.

A secretary at Lundgren Corp, disgruntled over the loss of her job, has revealed that Per Lundgren has been secretly seeing the doctor, but she can not confirm or deny if he, in fact, is suffering any health problems, other than her claim that he has been "visibly fatigued."

NAFL Playoffs Loom

The surprisingly successful New American Football League nears the completion of its regular season with one week left before the playoffs. Eutopia City and sports-crazed Chateauvallon are awash with football fever (not to be confused with the life-threatening fever seriously threatening many inhabitants of those cities. Ed Note: Newlink has fired its sports editor over this poor choice of words. Our apologies.)

Douglas, Neuwestbaden, and New Lancaster are also in the hunt as this last week will determine who plays for the SEUper Bowl and who stays home.

NAFL STANDINGS: WEEK 12
1. Eutopia City Violators 9-1-2 (421)
2. Chateauvallon Partisans 8-3-1 (310)

LATIN SEPARTISTS COMPLETE MARCH - BEGIN RALLY

Fadrique Martin De Lugo Guzman, Latino Socialistic Nationalist and separatist leaders of the MRA completed his march to New Schleswig, surrounded by about 200 followers and allies. Marching deep into the heart of an abandoned industrial district he planted an American flag on the site where he claims the CIA invaded a MEOR safehouse.

Fadrique, in a passionate speech said that while he has no sympathy with the MEOR whatsoever, that he can't stand the invasion of the sovereign authority of EUtopia! He called for the extradition of MEOR leader Dr. De Vlaminck to Eutopia for immediate trial "under Eutopian laws like every Eutopian citizen and not under a foreign power! "

He then erected the the flag of the MRA and presented some grievances of the fledgling Iberian Movement, such as every university should use the language of the community it is in! And to protest against the closing of the Anglo University of Buen Puerto, he also asked the government to stop the ghetto-forming of the Asians in the city that they call New Purim and spread them evenly over the country that they may be integrated better in the major cultures. He concluded with a plea for a state-donation for priest and ministers of every denomination!

Picture: Remains of the MEOR Base

After his speech, marchers erected a platform in preparation for the planned rally following the march.

LATIN MARCH INSPIRES COUNTER DEMONSTRATION

Meanwhile, across the province in Hafnia, a political rally, a counter-protest to Fadrique Guzman's Latin Separatist march in the northern towns of New Schleswig was held. Organized by local citizens of the province and financed, in part, by Seigfried Robertsson, Chief Executive of Gaiatech Tree Farms, the participants rallied under of the banner of national unity between the cultural groups.

The peaceful demonstrations produced about half the participants of the Separatist march, but concerned members of the city and provincial governments turned out to hear the concerns expressed.

NATION'S PAPAYA FARMERS CALL STRIKE - GROCERS JOIN IN PROTEST

Papaya and mango farmers from across Eutopia marched on the capital to protest a government decree to seize and destroy all papayas. Over 400 farmers and their familes slowed traffic and blocked streets with their pickers and harvest trucks as they slowly paraded around the capitol for several hours.

"You have destroyed our lives!" cried one farmer, Amelia McGovern, "The costs of farming today mean we must operate on the thinnest of margins, which many loans secured by our land and our equipment. You have just plunged us all into bankruptcy!"

Picture: Family of Bankrupted Farmers Riding to Eutopia City

52233.jpg

Many farmers pelted the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Technology with rotten fruits the government had not confiscated, in protests of the outspoken call by MECT IKK in blaming the papayas for the virus. The Minister, however, has not yet returned to work after coming down with the virus, himself.

Grocers and marketers also issued statements of protest. "While we formally recognize the government's need to respond to a potential health threat, this action was reckless and completely unwarranted. We have absolutely no data to show that any processed papayas, or any fruit, carry any virus."

Revealing information obtained through the Eutopian Public Information Act, lawyers from Eutopia's two largest food chains, Le Lion de la Nourriture and Gulp and Blow, cited an MHES report showing that no papayas from outside of the Hurteau region were found to be tainted. Further, they pointed out that the MHES reports claimed that fruit flies, not the papayas themselves, were found to be carrying the virus.

Many grocers threatened to join the farmers in their strike, essentially shutting down the marketing of food within Eutopia until appropriate restitution is made. "We do not make the food magically appear on our shelves," the grocers said in their prepared statement, "If you run our suppliers out of business, you run us out of business!"

ROYAL FOUNDATION HIRES ATTORNEY TO DEFEND PROPERTY

In a move that can only be seen as a response to recent rumblings in the national assembly about state seizure of property belonging to the heirs of the Eutopian royal family, the Royal Foundation has retained the legal services of noted Eutopian defense attorney T. Hawkton Tilly.

Spokesman for the Foundation, Parras Gotha claimed the move to be pre-emptive, and cited the "unpredictable and short-sighted behavior" by some members of the National Assembly, as reason for their action.

"This is unabashed communism," said Gotha in response to press inquiries. "This government isn't content to hand our national lands over to foreign imperialists, now they want to seize the property of their critics for themselves. Nothing could be a more blatant attempt at coercion than this attempt to silence Queen Maria."

Per Tilly was unavailable for comment, vacationing after the completion of the NAFL regular season.

FARPOINT MAYOR BLASTS GOVERNMENT - TERRITORIAL MILITIA FORMING

"What the bloody hell are they thinking?" yelled Mayor Thorsbeard to assembled reporters gathered outside his office, "Are they deaf? Blind? Asleep? And they wonder why people take up arms?"

The Mayor's rant came following the US withdraw back to their naval base and the resumption of their patrols by the Eutopian military. The town, and much of the province, remain under Eutopian military occupation, with road blocks in place around the territorial capitol and regular stops and searches of traffic in and out of the territory.

"Why is the military still here? Where is the MILE? Why has the MILE ordered his men to leave Farpoint? We'd rather have the Americans back, because at least the international community would watch them. We feel, no, we ARE, 100% unsafe hemmed in here by a military that has already tried to engineer a mercenary attack against us, which has funded independent militia operations, and which we suspect will move against us to silence our criticism at any time. If we are at peace, why is the military operating domestically?" the mayor demanded.

Police Commissioner Hightower lent his support to the Mayor's demands, "Now that the Americans have withdrawn I am calling on our territorial police to resume their duties, and with the completely unexplainable deriliction of his duties by new MILE Vilms I am personally calling upon all able-bodied men and women of the WET to volunteer for our territorial militia. If the national government wants to treat us as a foreign power and not as citizens deserving protection we will build our own protection!"

American Seeks Asylum, Claims Life Threatened by US Drug Prohibitions

A man who said he would be persecuted in the United States for smoking marijuana to fight a rare form of cancer has refused to board a plane in New Lancaster City and has announced that he is seeking refugee asylum in Eutopia.

Steve Whitsox , and his wife Michele and their two young daughters would have to leave Canada Eutopia within 90 days, according to MILE Immigration Supervisor Hansel Harding.

"We can't imagine we'll be denied because it would be just completely contrary to the testimony and the science and the evidence that we can introduce," Whitsox said.

Whitsox, a Libertarian candidate for a state governor in the 1990's has lived abroad seeking to grow and smoke marijuana for medical reasons since August 2002.

He cites Dr. Curt Connors of the Rochefort Metropolitan Cancer Academy, who testified by letter that Whitsox would die within four days of not smoking marijuana to relieve the symptoms of adrenal cancer.

Whitsox said his life had been prolonged by marijuana, which he began smoking at the suggestion of a friend.

American newspaper reports reveal that in 2000, an American jury in Auburn, Calif., convicted Whitsox of possessing peyote and a psychedelic mushroom but deadlocked with 11 of 12 jurors favoring acquittal on marijuana conspiracy, cultivation and possession charges.

Whitsox said three days in jail without marijuana almost killed him, prompting him to move overseas.

"I am really between a rock and a hard place," Whitsox said Monday. "If I go back to the United States I'm facing an immediate bailiff's warrant. They'll put me in jail. They're not going to give me marijuana."

Fishermen Rally in Support of Government Aid

Over six dozen fishermen rallied in Buen Puerto in support of a private initiative by touted by Per Felix Anzaldua of Anzaldua and associates.

The commercial fishermen in Buen Puerto have seen a precipitous drop in their catches thanks to increased competition from France and Spain following the expiration of the NAFA treaty which carved out choice fishing beds for Eutopia.

Though many claimed to be third or fouth generation fishermen, all welcomed a proposal to rebuild their careers as part of a new Eutopia indigenous shipping concern. Specifically the leaders of the assembled fishermen, a Per Hector Gonzalez, has called upon the governmet to buy the boats of commercial fishermen who are willing to give up their trade and provide those fishermen with the capital needed for them to take advantage of Eutopia's prime geographic location.

He was joined by a Per Tomas Delgado, who also asked that the National Assembly consider a program of discounted loans or outright grants, to bolster qualified fishermen, or others in failing industries, to transition to a more prosperous and productive method of supporting their families.

The fishermen have promised a "lobby day" of visiting with National Assembly members to promote this plan.

NAFL Playoffs Set

The Neuwestbaden Cougars (7-5-1) will take on President' Langley's Eutopia City Violators (10-1-2).

The Douglas Devils (8-5) will travel to play Chateauvallon Partisans (9-3-1) in the late game.

The winners will play next week for the SEUper Bowl, while the losers this week will play in the 2003 Lundgren Corporation Consolation Bow for third place in the league.*

HIJACKED PLANE REROUTED TO MOROCCO

Eutopian passengers over EUAir Flight 54 from Madrid made an unscheduled landing in Morocco as their plane was seized by hijackers earlier this morning.

All 36 Eutopian citizens, and 8 citizens of other nationalities bound from New Lancaster City were in good condition following the pilot's resumption of control from the four armed men who seized control of the Airbus jet.

The men, described as three "middle eastern looking" and one "English looking" took over the plane under the direction of the Anglo leader and started searching each passenger, in some cases tugging at men's faces and checking everyone's identification.

Whatever, or whomever, they were looking for was apparently not aboard the flight from Spain, and the leaders took the controls of the plane and diverted the flight into Moroccan air space where the four made a daring parachute escape.

Moroccan authorities stormed the plane when EUAir pilots had resumed control and brought it in for an emergency landing near Tangier. The plane was throroughly searched and an unset explosive device was found. All passengers were but aboard alternative flights and returned safely to New Lancaster City.

LT. GENERAL HARTWELL DECLARED AWOL BY TRIBUNAL - STRIPPED OF RANK

Though controversy still surrounds the missing former Lt. Colonel and Air Chief of the Eutopian military, a military tribunal declined to hear any of the many pre-existing charged levied by the civilian government against Dan Hartwell, and instead, in a ceremony marked by its formality and brevity, heard evidence confirming what has been known for months, that the former Air Force leader has abandoned his post and has remained absent without leave for a period no longer excusable.

The tribunal declined to rule one way or the other on desertion charges that the military adjudicator hoped to present against Hartwell, and declined to comment on any other charges as well.

"Those are a matter for another day and another tribunal," said Army Captain Edwin Wilson.

Hartwell has been missing for several months since his escape from his lengthy incarceration in a minimum security facility.

Engineering Audit Critical of Infrastructure

An independent national audit of Eutopia's infrastructure by the Eutopian Association of Professional Engineers (EAPE) gave the nation a strong "NEEDS IMPROVEMENT" in grading the safety and effectiveness of the country's rail lines, water, natural gas, and sewer systems, dams and bridges.

The nation's highway system did receive a passing grade though it was suggested some routes were underutilized and that perhaps the system may be "overbuilt", but the quality of the roads themselves was deemed sufficient.

"We hope the government will pay attention to this audit," said lead project director Robert Beadle, PE, "This is about more than dollars and sense, this is about public safety".

New Lancaster City Development Booms

Despite the large number of individuals and families displaced by the government's "urban renewal" program in New Lancaster City, entrepreneurs have sunk heavy dollars in to developing office and industrial parks around the outskirts of the city to take advantage of the proposed airport expansion.

"If we build it, they will come," said Craig Kossner, one such speculative businessman.

The new developments cover acres of land between the airport and the Conder River, and a new luxury hotel complex, overlooking the river is planned to host foreign businessmen and travellers staying overnight between segments of trans-atlantic flights.

"We are taking a risk," admitted Kossner, "but nothing ventured, nothing gained. We've invested too much to consider failure as an option."

FAMED INDUSTRIALISTS & "SPEAKER FOR LIFE" JACOB LUNDGREN HOSPITALIZED. PROGNOSIS: POOR

Former MILE, Speaker of the Eutopian National Assembly, and one-time President Jacob Lundgren was found collapsed on the outskirts of a forest just outside of Eutopia City on the border of WET. A young boy walking his dog found the Eutopian lying on his back under a pine tree, and immediately ran home to his father who called the paramedics.

Lundgren was found suffering for exposure, clearly not dressed for a cold EUtopia morning, but more seriously appears to have suffered a brain hemmorage, and has fallen into a coma.

Security cameras from his private business office show him leaving work aroun 5:32 am this morning, with a glazed expression and a stagger in his walk. He was carrying several papers, with many fluttering away as he dropped them.

Police on the scene have found no evidence to suggest foul play, and many were visibly shaken by the sight of their former leader.

Lundgren's scattered family were contacted and all have converged upon Eutopia General Hospital where they maintain a vigil around his bed.

"It appears that the Per Lundgren suffered massive internal trauma resulting from the hemmorage. We are unsure but suspect it may have been brought on by a series of minor strokes. We are doing everything we can for him," said a private family physician, working with hospital staff.

Lundgren appeared peaceful lying in his hospital bed. Doctors give his odds of recovery as "very slight".

"SPEAKER FOR LIFE" NO MORE - JACOB LUNDGREN PASSES AWAY IN HOSPITAL

Former Minister of the Interior and Law Enforcement, Speaker of the parliament and international businessman Jacob Lundgren died quietly while under care at Eutopia General Hospital. The former long-time government official was found in the forests outside of Eutopia City not long after he had resigned his position as MILE.

Lundgren had recently liquidated many of his assets and placed them in a blind trust. The purpose of this trust has not been disclosed to the public.

About the time of his resignation, the former MILE had successfully persuaded the United Eco-Fascists to renounce their promise of violence if their demands for justice against their attackers and their request for greater autonomy were granted. Though the government has failed to adopt the Lundgren Compromise, the United Eco-Fascists have not renewed their campaign against the government, though they still reputedly hold many members of the armed resistance against the Americans in Farpoint.

UEF Spokesperson Waldo Ralph Whitman issued a statement today saying that "It is great sorrow that a statesman like Per Lundgren passes from this earth. While his politics were often in direct opposition to ours, he proved himself an honorable man and a peace maker. We hope that the government will honor his legacy by allowing us to live freely and securely and will hold those who butchered our citizens accountable for their actions."

Day to day operations of Lundgren's remaining businesses have passed to his son, Michael.

NORTH ATLANTIC FISHING AGREEMENT CONFERENCE TO OPEN IN CANADA

After substantial wheeling and dealing, the North Atlantic nations that had been party to the first NAFA treaty have agreed, reluctantly in some cases, to being new talks at the beginning of the next term.

The Toronto conference should prove to be interesting based on the ill feelings of some conference participants toward each other. The French claim the Eutopians have violated the spirit of many agreements, including the generous allowance to try alleged Eutopian pirates in Eutopia rather than France. The Spanish and Moroccans have denounced Eutopian sanctuary for Western Saharan immigrants those nations claim have ties to terrorist organizations. The United States and Canada have also had up and down relationships with Eutopia over trade and foreign policy issues.

Eutopian fishermen are divided on expectations about the conference. Some see it as a chance to regain a share of their lost market. Others see it as too little too late, and hope the government will either help buy out their struggling businesses, subsidize the development of a modern fishing fleet, or provide "buy-out" aid to allow them to pursue a merchant and shipping business known by many as the "Anzaldua Plan".

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION TO ASSIST MHES

After months of fighting the mysterious virus that has hit hardest in the Latin provinces, the MHES learned today that the World Health Organization will be sending specialists and relief workers to help contain and treat the virus.

"Spread of the virus beyond the Latin provinces as a red flag for us," said a WHO spokesperson, "And while our resources our limited, we think we can send enough people in to aid MHES Al'Aeshir's experienced teams to help make a difference."

Some have criticized the government's handling of the virus, with early confusion about quarantines and the eradication of a recent papaya harvest, but local government officials in the afflicted areas have praised the tireless resolve of MHES workers and the minister in this ongoing crisis.

ATTORNEYS FOR THE MILITARY ENDORSE CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM, RECOGNIZE AUTHORITY OF HIGH COURT

The InterMartial Judicial Council, an organization representing military attorneys of all three branches of the Eutopian armed forces issued a statement today affirming that military law is distinct and separate from civilian law, but that the Eutopian High Court has authority to review, uphold, and overturn rulings of the military courts and their tribunals.

"The Eutopian Armed Forces are sworn to preserve Eutopia, her constitution, and her civilian government," the IJC declared in their written statement, "Though the military may view issues differently at times and is a unique governmental entity, we must respect the constitution which we have sworn to protect. If our actions threaten that constitution, we have betrayed our sacred sworn duty."

The statement went further and endorsed a clear delineation between the authority of military law and civilian law, while recognizing High Court authority. In specifically cited the case pending to review the actions of service chiefs Tulp and Haynes as "clearly under the authority of the IJC and its military tribunals.

"Only if our officers and attorneys err should this be moved out of military court, and then only to the High Court," the statement continued.

Queries about the IJC's positions on the actual guilt or innocence of the senior officers was met with the response that it would be inappropriate to comment on the case until such time as all the facts are heard.

PARTISAN MEDIA MAKING A COMEBACK

In response, perhaps, to a recent ENPG report on public opinion in Eutopia and the strong impact of partisan news outlets like "The Eutopian Worker", Eutopians are expected to see a rise in party-connected media.
It is rumored that "The National", a small but vocal publication from the 1980's will be making a comeback. "The National's" editors dissolved the newspaper and their conservative party in 2002 with the dissolution of the monarchy. However the rights to the name and the remaining printing equipment were given to the last chief editor, Harold Clark, who, upon his death in January 2004, bequeathed those to his son-in-law's sister, Charlotte Jenkins Talbott (Wife of CC presidential candidate Prof. Pierre Talbott), who had been a journalist for The National and press manager for its party from 1990 through their demise.

Other papers, including the pro-monarchist "The Regal", have begun publication as well.

CITIZENS PROTEST GOVERNMENT INACTION ON UEF

While the idea of a citizen protest in Eutopia is hardly news, many uncoordinated demonstrations erupted across Eutopia sympathetic to the cause of the UEF and demanding justice for their victims.

Signs with slogans like "Let 'Em Live" and "Extremism in the Pursuit of Justice is No Vice" were waved and passionate speeches given in Gilford, Harton, Chateauvallon, Dunwich, New Lancaster City, and Hannover.

While detractors were critical of the UEF and the protestors, they were much smaller in number.

"If someone killed my daughter, then yeah, I'd be willing to go to desperate measures to try to find justice," said an observer in Dunwich, "I really don't agree with the Eco-Fascist politics, but the government's got to 'fess us and admit it was wrong and try to work something out with these people."

His sentiments were echoed by a woman in Chateauvallon, "I'm not saying the UEF are blameless, and maybe their leaders need to be questioned, but how can we excuse the massacre of their village? How can you blame them for wanting some assurances of protection."

AMERICAN CONTINUES TO DEFY ORDER TO LEAVE
Steve Whitsox , the man who said he would be persecuted in the United States for smoking marijuana to fight a rare form of cancer has refused to leave New Lancaster City and continues to demand refugee asylum in Eutopia.

MILE Immigration Supervisor Hansel Harding has ordered Steve Whitsox , and his wife Michele and their two young to leave Eutopia . Whitsox claims he would die within four days of not smoking marijuana to relieve the symptoms of adrenal cancer, if forced to return to America.

FORMER PRESIDENT LANGLEY SEEN IN SWITZERLAND

While returning to the national spotlight, little has been said by former President Langley about the nature of his disappearance. However, Eutopian Newslink has been contacted by an amateaur photographer from Zurich claiming to have pictures of a weary-looking Jacob Langley at a bus stop in Zurich and stepping out of an unmarked van carrying baggage.

The unreasonable price demanded by the photographer prohibit their reproduction in these pages, but Newslink editors are convinced of the authenticity of the photos.

Crown Princess Francesca Madeline Saxe-Coburg-Gotha-Blade! Rumored to be Pregnant

The daughter of Queen Maria Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Chief of Staff Blade!, Princess Francesca has been recovering at home after being found wandering aimlessly along the shore of Nueva Cordoba. However Eutopian General Hospital doctors today refused to deny the rumor spread that the Princess is "with child".

Authorities have questioned the princess after her initial hospital stay about the mysterious disappearance of husband and herself months ago. However, Princess Francesca had suffered obvious head trauma and has no memory beyond enjoying a relaxing evening on their yacht off the coast of Nueva Rioja.

While the birth has yet to be confirmed nor denied, and Queen Maria and her spokespers have been extremely protective of her daughter's privacy, it has been revealed that "there is no evidence that any of Francesca's injuries have threatened her pregnancy, if indeed she is pregnant."

New Lancaster "Birders" Disappointed by Turnout

The New Lancaster chapter of the Royal Audobon Society was disappointed when their annual bird watching festival netted far than desired results.

"Normally, this is peak season for a wide variety of birds, including some long-ranged foreign species, migrating over the season," said chapter president Stephanie Toussaint. "But while we did see a few of the more rare foreign species, our own domestic population was grossly under represented."

The annual festival usually draws over 200 citizens, and this year when the ceremonies were opened by Queen Maria, a crowd of over 300 were present and registered to participate. But many spotting books had blank pages, as very few species were seen in the designated watching areas along the Conder River. And , judging by the completed books returned to festival organizers, those domestic species which were spotted were rare in number with many birdwatchers going home with little to show for their time.

"This sucked!" said little Suzy Rothschild of Hafnia, "I'd rather play Nintendo!"

Eutopia City Violators SEUper Bowl Champs!

In the first annual SEUperbowl, the title of the New American Football League was awarded to the Eutopia City Violators , who accepted the trophy without their team president, former national president, Jacob Langley.

The Violators bested their rival, the Chateauvallon Partisans, who had shared the upper rankings of the league with the Violators all season. But the benching of injured Partisans QB Harry McNair, and a career performance by Violators QB Burt Favre, set the tone for the game in which the inspired Violators doubled the rivals scoring, 45 - 22.

And though it was played with much less fan fare, the Lundgren Corp. Consolation Bowl, putted theNeuwestbaden Cougars against Charles Morgan's Douglas Devils. Though the game received little national attention, it was one of the most competitive contests of the year with the Devils edging our a 35 - 31 win over the team owned by MTEF Michael vonStreusser.

Based on its outstanding ticket revenues, the NAFL plans to return next season, though new ownership may be sought for some teams that lagged in performance.

EUTOPIA CITY MAYOR TO RETIRE, CRITICAL OF RIVAL

Current Mayor of EUtopia City, Raju Chandragupta announced his retirement this week, after many years of public service. We expressed a general dissatisfaction with government in general but claimed he was "too old and too tired" to fight it any longer.

Under Mayor Chandragupta, Eutopia City grew over 20% in population, and despite recent national economic trouble, has maintained a reasonably stable economy and an unemployment rate lower than the national average.

However, the elderly mayor is not going quietly into the night. Apparently disturbed by a reported snub by a potential successor, the Mayor vowed to help find "a suitable candidate" to fill his seat.

The snub arose from a recent public speech given by MILE Konstantin Vilns, who announced his candidacy yesterday. Those present reported Minister Vilns to have said:
" I am here to bring to you the idea of an opportunity for change. For the last 20 years you have been represented by the great politician and mayor Jaideep Chandinagar. But it is a time for something new. Thats why I am here. You get a chance to go to something new, something different, but something that will work to get rid of the problems strangling this city. "

Though Vilns apparently praised the Mayor's service, Mayor Chandragupta took the criticism of problems "strangling the city" personally. Further, he seemed most upset that the MILE, throughout his speech, got the Mayor's name wrong.

"If he doesn't know who the Mayor is, and I've been the Mayor for the last 20 years, what does that say about his qualifications? These young whippersnappers think they've got the solution to everything. But this shows he does not know half of what he claims he knows he knows. By the end of this campaign, I can assure you, he will know who I am."

The Mayor's comments were cut short by news of the disaster outside of the city.

While the MILE could not be contacted, supporters say it was an honest mistake brought on by the long hours put in by the MILE in recent months, after taking over from recently deceased MILE Jacob Lundgren. "This guys is completely overreacting," said one Vilns supporter.

TRAIN WRECK KILLS 22 OUTSIDE OF EUTOPIA CITY, HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS SPILL

While the Mayor of Eutopia City was seeking to derail the campaign of the MILE, Konstantin Vilns, two trains, one passenger and one cargo, collided outside of Eutopia City, killing 22 passengers and crew while releasing tons of chlorine, ammonia, and other harmful chemicals into the suburban countryside.

An initial assessment by government engineers faults outdated and damaged switching equipment that misreported the two trains' locations and routed them onto the same track.

"The worst part about this," said an invesitgator, and project director for the Eutopian Association of Professional Engineers (EAPE) Robert Beadle, PE, "is that this horrible accident was 100% preventable. These tracks were just audited and their judged insufficient. But rather than any attention given to this, public safety was put off for other issues."

Clean up and recovery continues through the night as rescue teams continue to evacutate residents and wreck survivors.

BLUESTEEL ENTERPRISES LANDS LARGE CONTRACT

Bluesteel Enterprises has been awarded a sizable contract by RRC&GC, the construction firm awarded charged with the expansion of the New Lancaster City Airport.

"Bluesteel's local facilities made this an attractive partnership," said a RRC&GC spokesperson. "Our men supply the finest labor and design expertise, but having the quality raw materials and finished goods produced by Bluesteel will make for a better final product."

RRC&GC will purchase their custom cast fittings and frameworks from Bluesteel, and will contract with them for aggregates and concrete work as well. RRC&GC also hopes to purchase a wide variety of mechanical goods from Bluesteel once the interior specs are finalized.

CHARLES MORGAN: FIRST IN RUMORS, LAST IN THE POLLS

While MDIA Charles Morgan's campaign has yet to captivate the public, the minister's name is surfacing all over Eutopia in a wide variety of unusual places. It has been reported to Newslink by insider sources that Morgan is the secret choice of many in the United States State Department to govern Eutopia, based on his pro-US history. One ENDTech official, who declined to be identified, claimed to have "heard from a highly placed friend" that the Americans will only lift the arms ban if a suitable pro-US person gets elected.

Morgan was good friends with the former Undersecretary for Eutopian Affairs, who was abruptly removed from office earlier in the term. Spokesmen for the US Government deny this rumor and point to recent statements by Morgan that seemed to suggest a harder line toward the Americans. When pressed for a preference in the Eutopian presidential race the spokesperson became nervous and dodgy, and refused comment.

There are additional rumors that should the presidential bid fail, that Minister Morgan plans to purchase The Gazette back from BFC Inc. The Gazette has recently reduced publication around the island, and some fear that without the guidance of its' leader, former Chief of Staff Blade! that it is adrift. Whether or not a sale could be approved before the return of the mysteriously missing Blade! is unknown.

A return to publishing is not an unreasonable prediction, however. A recent ENPG Flash Poll shows the presidential race very close at the top. Which is not where Per Morgan is.

Five Hundred Eutopian voters were polled on their preferences for president if the election were held today. (Or rather, on the day the poll was taken)

  • January 12
    - President IKK: 39%
    - VP Talbot: 35%
    - MDIA Morgan: 10%
    - Other/Undecided: 16%

Morgan did register support in some coastal communities, where his support of the Anzaldua plan earned him some votes. Other candidates receiving votes were: Rebecca Cook, Vice-Admiral Tulp, & Queen Maria. The poll has a +/- 6% margin of error.

CITIZENS PROTEST TENTH SLAYING

Convicted murderer Jorge Sebastian was put to death at midnight last night, the tenth criminal to be sentenced and executed by Judge Caesar Anton. Anton, known by many as "El Maestro de Muerto" has made many public statements about his "holy mission" to rid this world of criminal scum.

The Fort-Aux-Francis judge, sentenced Sebastian to death hanging in the controversial case where Sebastian's wife and her lover were found dead in a parked car in the forests outside the city. Sebastian's DNA and hair samples were found in the car, which was his car, and Sebastian had no alibi. He claimed innocence to the end, saying he had left his favorite bar, drunk, with a flask of alcohol and wandered the streets crying about his wrecked marriage. But no one could confirm his whereabouts after he left the bar.

Citizens against the death penalty continued their criticism of Judge Anton, who once joked he hung a man "just to watch the sinful miscreant die". But others in the community who favor the death penalty have questions about this case.

Supporters of the Judge note that violent crime has decreased 15% in the judicial district since Anton's selection to the bench, and say he provides a tough and effective deterrent, though opponents disagree.

LATIN SEPARTISTS CLASH, THREE INJURED

A meeting of activists seeking greater autonomy, and perhaps separatism, of the Spanish provinces turned violent, as Latin activists on extreme opposite ends of the political spectrum clashed over what policies an autonomous Isabella should pursue.

While citizens of most major parties were present, a fringe group associated with the new El Tridente Eutropico took great offense to much of the meeting being steered by the Asociacion Latina de la Libertad. While the ALL is focused primarily on autonomy issues, the particular leaders of that meeting were outspoken members of the political left.

Though it took thirty minutes to restore order, and three activists suffered injuries significant to require hospitalization, organizers of the meeting say the two factions did not represent the majority of those present and they hope future meetings can continue peacefully.

However those involved in the incident claim that they will not be able to bring both sides together with such extreme and irreconcilable differences.

BLOOD, ORGANS IN SHORT SUPPLY

Representatives from the Eutopian Red Cross made an urgent plea for blood, organ, and tissue donations calling the shortage in medical rooms across the nation "a crisis".

Eutopia does not allow medical technicians to remove organs for donation after death without expressed written permission from the donor. Aggrieved families, even if they are willing to see the organs donated, often are prohibited from making such a donation of their family member's organs or tissues. And given the time sensitive nature of removing organs after death, it is often impossible to track down personal paperwork the deceased may have left giving such permission.

The shortage of blood, particularly type "O", is a sign of potential trouble as many Eutopians are still recovering from the mysterious virus that plagued the southern provinces.

The Eutopian Red Cross urged citizens to come forward and make donations and to prepare organ and tissue donation permission papers, but warned that without some sort of reform of the system, the problem will continue

RETIRING MAYOR CHANGES MIND...
Current Mayor of EUtopia City, Raju Chandragupta is announced that he has changed his plans. He will still retire as announced, but he has decided to legally change his name back to Jaideep Chandinagar.

The elderly mayor had changed his name after the death of his father and his even-more-elderly-mother's tales of abuse and mistreatment. He took on a new name, to honor his mother's family and to put his past behind him.

This name change caused some confusion recently when MILE Konstantin Vilms, who had considered a candidacy to replace Chandragupta, mistakenly called him by his former name.

Criticism he received in response to his negative attack on Vilms over the comment, and new information that suggested that his mother may have, in fact, not been abused, but was instead, at her advanced age, confusing her past life with a popular romance novel, have prompted the mayor, with a mix of embarassment and bitterness, to simply change his name back.

"If everyone wants to call be Jaideep Chandinagar, then fine, call be Chandinagar. Call me Chandragupta. Call me Porky. Call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner."

Direct elections will be held in Eutopia City, one of only three municipalities to choose their mayor in that fashion, in the coming weeks.

RARE RUBY TO BE DISPLAYED IN EUTOPIA

South African heiress Witney VonVaam will travel to Eutopia to open the special "Stones of South Africa" traveling exhibit, on display throughout the nation this month.

The six city tour will feature some of the finest and rarest gemstones and jewels from the southern continent, while Per VonVaam will personally escort her family's rare "Heart of the Lion Ruby" into the country and will wear it at a special charity dinner to benefit Eutopia's museums.

No exact location has been decided upon for the coming gala, but the exhibit will show in six provincial museums and the national gallery in Eutopia City.

CONDUCT REVIEW BEGINS FOR SERVICE CHIEFS

Eutopia may be left with some vacancies in its military command structure. Or, alternatively, the credibility of our past president may be cast in extreme doubt. One of these two results are likely at the conclusion of the series of events set in motion this week by the Intermartial Judicial Council's conduct review hearing of Vice Admiral Henrik Tulp and Brigadeer General David Haynes.

Live coverage of the event is prohibitied to protect the confidentiality of state secrets, but Newslink will bring you frequent updates.

Many prominent Eutopians have been invited to testify, including former President and Commander in Chief Vasco I Killed Kenny, upon whom much of the case rests. Several irregularities in the normal monitoring of Eutopia's command post seem to have occurred, making the truth difficult to ascertain.

In a big surprise, as the court named witnesses to appear before the tribunal, Michael Lundgren, son of deceased former Speaker and Mile Jacob Lundgren was invited to testify. With no known connection to the military, other than his mandatory conscript service, this remains a mystery.

It is unknown how long this hearing will proceed. Final outcomes range from no action and reinstatement of the service chiefs on one extreme all the way to charges of treason on the other.

METF Launches Probe into Maritcon

New minister, and former president, Jake Langley, launched a special probe into the finances and operating procedures of Maritcon, Eutopia's government subsidized shipbuilding concern.

"Something here just doesn't add up," said Langley, "and we're going to get to the bottom of it."

Calls to Maritcon went unanswered.

"El Maestro" Goes for Eleven

Judge Caesar Anton added another notch to his gavel, literally, making the symbolic gesture after convicting Dolph Idiolum to death following his conviction in the murder of Charles DeSpirit, General Secretary of the national federation of the Eutopian “Soldiers of God”. Local police in the French provinces finally solved this case, which had remained open since the term of President O'Floinn.

Idiolum was a former member of the MEOR, who was caught recently trying to purchase illegal African weapons in Hurteau. Nabbed by MILE border authorities, Idiolum opened fire and wounded two agents, before he was brought in.

While hard evidence against Idiolum in the slaying of Anton was a bit sketchy, Judge Anton, using the clear evidence of the attempted weapons purchase, his name on an old police MEOR watch -list, and testimony from a cell mate of Idiolum, accepted the local magistrate's charges and sentenced him the maximum punishment.

Idiolum denied the testimony given by Marc Grimauld, that the suspected MEOR member kept him awake all night boasting of his adventures in the MEOR, of daring criminal actions and "gunning down that pig DeSpirit". Anton, in his opinion, cited Idiloum's ties to terrorism as reason enough to doubt his credibility and accused him of lying in the court in addition to the charged crimes.

STOCK EXCHANGE NAMES NEW DIRECTOR

The Neuwestabden Stock Exchange today named, Zuckergußgebäck von Maazarin as Managing Director.

Per Maazarin will be responsible for keeping the exchange in good working order, in building membership, and investigating fraud and abuse.

Per Maazarin is the leader of the new "ultra centrist" movement. He is a retired second lieutenant in the 1st eutopian reserve-frogman division, and is a third generation Eutopian.

New fashion? Personal Security

It's hard to follow the trends in metropolitan Eutopian cities, but one thing is clear: bodyguards are in! Perhaps spurred on by the trendy "mod-squad" of personal security professionals that accompanied missing Chief of Staff Blade as a hip entourage, more and more prominent Eutopians are being seen with their own posse of protection

New political sensation and wealthy scion Michael Lundgren has been seen at his Buen Puerto Sport Bar with several former football players keeping his back (let's hope they are better guards than football players!) and other mysterious men watching for threats.

Captain Martinez, a pretty politically minded paratrooper, has also been seen with some burly security men from Markinson Security. These guys are well dressed, big, and mean business. Whether or not this has anything to do with the recent attacks on him in the Latin provinces during the last election are unknown.
