I've been away from EU3 for a while but I just got back into it when I noticed the Divine Wind expansion on steam.

I started a game as Vijayanagar (all settings normal), formed Hindustan then conquered China, now I'm mopping up the rest of SE Asia+Persia and it's getting close to 1600.

Out of interest I've been doing a bit of TAG hopping to see how the Europeans are getting along without me and the map is crazy! Spain and Portugal seem to be so deadlocked in conquering North Africa and Anatolia they've barley touched America (despite having explored most of it). Spain has Puerto Rico and Portugal has 2 Brazilian colonies... while France and Britain seem to own half of each other, Russia is no where near forming and the Hordes are strong as ever.

I swear it wasn't like that on the old versions of them game, what's going on? This is annoying me because I was hoping to have a big Asia vs. Europe showdown in the late game :(

Well, sometimes the big colonial empires don't show up if they're too busy fighting each other. It happens. I've noticed that it's pretty rare in DW to see Russia form and get anywhere near its historical size. Just too many little factions to clean up, plus they gotta nab a couple of Lithuanian provinces which can be difficult if the human player doesn't go in to destabilize the place for them. Muscovy should probably start with more cores on neighbours.

It may have just been me but I ended up with an AI run Europe where Spain, Russia, and Scandinavia formed. The HRE stay pretty much where it was (after Austria got beaten back down to its proper size by Russia) and France actually didn't look like a mess. In the same game most of the South America colonial revolutions actually happened and they formed in the right places (mostly). My guess is the AI just occasionally gets lucky or unlucky.

Spain kinda wrecked though by blobbing all over North Africa and the Ottoman Empire.

Also I have yet to see a game of DW where the hordes survive past running into the HRE. Usually Bohemia or Austria eats them before exploding into a collection of minors that Moscowy or Novgorod eats to make Russia.

Yeah that's what I was expecting to happen, I dunno maybe I just got unlucky since this is my first game on DW - it's quite frustrating though since Africa really isn't the way to go on this game so it's almost like they're letting me win lol

DW is a mess if you want anything even remotely historical to happen.

Spain will almost never form - Castille will more often than not eat Portugal (so they wont colonize).

Ottomans will fall apart.

Russia has no chance. Whatsoever.

England will be in never ending dead lock with France. Most often England will fall apart and never colonize, so will France more often than not.

Bohemia and Austria will snake into Asia (Lithuania sometimes too).

Everything else, i dont really care about.

I find its usually Castille that ends up in Scandinavia, but I have to say I usually see Spain forming out of Castille, and Russia tends to form when I play too (or get eaten right off the start by GH one or the other). For me the usual thing that doesn't form is Great Britian, it usually explodes into a horde of minors.

My DW5.1 Europe 1821 without player intervention (This is how my Europe usually looks at the end of DW matches I find with some differences)

In my Inca game I had quite a superpower-filled Europe:

Castille formed Spain and colonized South America and part of North America, while also being all over Africa (which doomed them against me because once I killed their fleet most of their army was perpetually stranded in Africa)

Portugal survived with Lisboa, Lothian, Azores, and Madeira (and an alliance with England stopping Spain from eating them before they colonized), and colonized all over the place, eventually moving their capital to South Africa.

England couldn't form GB because of Portugal owning Lothian, but they colonized North America and eventually made moves in India and Somalia.

Denmark formed Scandinavia, took territory in Africa and colonized Canada.

France blobbed in Western Europe and Italy, and conquered Creek.

Brandenburg conquered TO/Prussia and a large chunk of Lithuania and Poland, conquered Central America, and colonized Greenland and far northern Canada.

Austria ate the entire GH and Kazakh while losing Tirol and Styria and never retaking them.

Ottomans split Hungary with Austria, ate the Timurids and Chagatai, and beat Austria to East Asia.

Muscowy survived in former Novgorod but were mostly irrelevant.

So I ended up with quite some land powers to deal with after westernizing, but I ended up dominating by just controlling the seas; eventually only England had a bigger fleet. Countries with isolated territory in Europe (like France owning southern Italy) are doomed at that point, can easily build up warscore against them and drive up their WE. Brandenburg was the biggest pain, they had a massive army and were concentrated in the Baltic.

Cheers guys, still hope for EU4 I guess - hopefully they'll make the North Africans more powerful in defence (but equally unlikely to expand themselves). To be fair I'm not sure what the AI thinks of my hindu middle east but still... haha

I believe setting AI aggressiveness low helps somewhat to keep things sensible as AI is less likely to declare stupid wars.

Good idea, I'll try that next time :)

In my Japan game Russia and Scandinavia formed. Castille looked great for a while but then fell apart completely and Portugal declared independence which was interesting to see. Bohemia is otherwise the major european power as usual.
Papal states have most of italy + colonies and just beat England in a war
