Now, yes. But it seems a lot of people on this thread want the EU to become much more centralized.

As for English, I think the main point would be that it's the most widely spoken language (even in the EU) right now. Russian certainly wouldn't be. ;)

Re: Official Language

I was wondering, does the EU have an official language? If it does I would guess that it would be German since they are the economic power beind the EU, they have the most people and there are other countries that either speak all German or mainly German. (Austria, Switzerland)

Currently there are eleven official languages which are all being used during the larger meetings. English, French, German, Spanish and Italian seem to be the most used.

We have the right to speak our own language, we also have the right to be governed in our own language. Maybe you like to do everything in German but I don't. Maybe we should demand that the entire EU learns Dutch as the majority of the Benelux inhabitants speak it and because the Benelux is the precursor to the EU.
We'll just have to get along as it is.

Imagine all those leftist "Republicans" speaking the same language as the papacy does... Nyah, that wouldn't be possible.

Exactly, I'm more pro-European than some of the mainland Europeans I know. It is possible to be British and Pro-EU, Republican, it's possible to be an American and pro-EU and Monarchist. Don't pigeonhole people by nationality.

That's why I propose Esperanto :D

I think countries should maintain there own, however for things like official Parliament business I think English, French, German, Spanish and Italian should be the ones used although records should be taranslated into the dominant languages of all member-states.

esperanto (invented by Tomasz Zan IIRC, Pole! Ha! I am sooo showing off!) would be cool, it's extremely simple and based on Italian...

correct, because that would be the same as saying that the other languages aren't good enough.

P.S. Esperanto sucks. Could as well take latin because it was first (for Western Europe). Or maybe Indo-European: give those linguists somehting to dop while they reconstruct it.
Esperanto... bleh, the idea alone....

Language

Maybe latin as official language will be good, because the you save a lot of buerocrates in Brussels.

Anyhow the problem to day is that the EU has a demcratic deficit.
We have to build an European federal constitution. Build on several pillars like:

Parlamentarism
Federalism
Subsidiarity
"offentlighetsprincip" - the right for every citizen have governement documents, with exemption of defence and foorreign policy secrets.
Transparency
Social welfare
Market economy

and of course all other human rights.

An artificialanguage can never be agreed to as an official language, latin isn't realistic too... But what do we need an officilal EU language for anyway? I know I'd never want to be a part of an EU which doesn't have my native language as an official one. I say hire more translators.

Hi,
very interesting and good thread.
Just my 2 euro:
1. All nations in europe have only a chance to play a role in the world, when they join the EU. Because there will be a strong China and the US of course wo is already a superprower. No eurpean state is important enough, only the EU will be an important factor.
2.Also every nation in Europe has to join the EURO. There are too much economical relations between the diferent european nations.
3. I think the Idea of a federal state as EU will be more and moe popular especially in the young generation. I dream of a EU president with power, who is directly elected by the people. A federal police, because crimes have no borders. An a united foreign policy. And of course a united european army.
4. offical language. The first lanuage should always be the mother tonque. The offical language should be English. And my polish friends. German is not harder to learn than Polish :D. For example for me it was easier to learn Russian than English. Also look how many people speak German in Europe. 100 Mio as the mother tonque. And it think it's more common on the Balkan and in Eastern Europe as English. The language isn't the problem:look at switzerland 4 languages, but no problem.

Britain has to realize that they are not an island in the mouth of the Hudson River. They are a European nation.
The world needs a counterpart to the US. So they cannot do what they want.

An EU president with actual POWER?? No thank you, no United states of Europe :D Don't get me wrong, I'm as pro-EU as one can get, but an US-type president with actual power rather than just a symbol of the unity is not needed IMO.

And it think it's more common on the Balkan and in Eastern Europe as English

I didin;t get that one. Do you think it is more common or as common? because it's neither one here...

Actually for some people German is easier to learn then English, French or Russian.
You have some 20 mio speaking Dutch and say 17 mio wpeaking the five Scandinavian languages to add to the big brothers in central Europe.

So I thought Britain was just some miles east of statue of liberty and Sweden the 51st state
