If you are going to be in Germany for Octoberfest, Neuchuenstein, etc. then I’d recommend a trip down (or up) the Romantic Road in which is in the south of Germany. It’s something of a misnomer, because its actually named after an ancient Roman road rather than being a spot for German honeymooners. Since you’re traveling with your wife, you’ll probably find it wonderful. I traveled over there with my wife last year and we had a wonderful time.

E-mail me (Jiminov@hotmail.com) if you’d like specific itinerary suggestions for this little-known, but highly enjoyable trip. I don’t want to bore everyone with my travel guide spiel.

Milano is a good place to be in September. The city is crawling with models for all the fall fashion shows. ; ) Oh yeah, there's il Duomo, la Scala, the Last Supper and some other old Italian stuff too.

As a Melbourne resident who has been lucky enough to get to Europe twice I would suggest:
. buy the green Michelin guides available in travel bookshops - they offer route suggestions, travel times and what is worth seeing. These are a must.
. I have done the bus tour thing and also driven through Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria. If you like the outdoors, the Alps are definitely worth spending a week in.
. I found that I spent too much time driving and not enough time sightseeing.
. I wanted to see the history that we don't have in Oz - castles, museums, walled towns etc. So if you need any advice feel free to ask.
. Four weeks isn't going to be long enough - try for some more leave.

Graham, as you can see by the answer Europe is big and you can do all of it in one month. Ask one person in Europe he will give ten place to go to, if you ask here you'll end up with 1000 place to go in a month...
Decide first what are you priorities. If you decide to come in France, feel free to write me an e-mail (dermat@caramail.com).
I'm from brittany (western France) and my girlfriend is australian, we live in Paris. So please free to ask about any information on where to travel in France or Paris... or if you want the advice of an australian living in Europe for three years...

Kind regards.
