OR alternatively a council of wise men (those who signed up for Slargos Party :D ) assigns countries based on skill level and preference (and nepotism, obviously)

Heh. As long as Slargos doesn't do it by himself... we saw that last time, and I'll keep claiming that the setup was flawed - especially Damo in OE...

Btw, Lotus:
I did not threatening to quit anything, I just quit. Why? Because I wasn't even going to join Reloaded in the first place, but you and Slargos buggered me to, and said "this game will be much different from the last one, a whole different experience". But it was not, which I quickly found out. So I joined on a false background.

But I will admit that I perhaps overreacted when quitting, and that's why I re-joined...

I suggest Tonioz and Triangle swap places - I've no idea how good Triangle is, but Tonioz would be a good counterweight to Peter's France. Otherwise, I don't see any real problems (although I've no idea how good Anibal and Matija are).

Since everyone and his dog have picked nations already I won't hesitate stating my prefered choices.

Portugal, England, Holland, Russia; in no particular order.

Should we decide to play with the 1520 setup I strongly urge to increase the Russian Land tech at start...

If we're including the Mughals and Persia, why not inlude other "potential" majors in the play list, instead of condemning several players to the relative obscurity of european minors? Not only would those players have more to do, but it would probably be more fun all around. Some initial, tenative, suggestions are:

China

Potential Objection 1: This nation is usually considered too far away from Europe (and hence the action) to be playable.

Answer: The action is now much closer with Mughal and Persia players- China is viable from the start in light of this objection, and will only grow more so as time passes and European powers try to expand into its sphere of influence.

Potential Objection 2: This nation is considered somewhat overpowered.

While this might be somewhat true at the start, it is less of an issue as time passes. With its penalty to tax, trade, and tech China's advantage is less and less as time passes and is further negated by the fact that it has many enemies.

Potential Objection 3: China's Events and Leaders are horrible

China's events can be avoided by changing the tag to Manchu prematurely to allow the indivudial playing it to avoid a massive headache and to continue to have a good time. Alternativly, we could simply allow the individual playing them to suffer through the events fully or perhaps reduce their severity and/or duration.

China's leaders are a non-issue since we'll be using a leader generator.

Incas

Potential Objection 1: Incas have horrible inital tech, horrible tech group, horrible dp slider settings, and an isolation penalty.

These can all be recitifed before the game begins. Its competely unrealistic, but the fun could make up for it.

Potential Objection 2: Having the Incas will weaken Spain (or some other colonial power) and induce fierce competition into an area that is usually easy to colonize.

Thats the whole point of having them. Europe is usually filthy rich anyway, and making them work to have territory in SA will make the game more interesting.

Potential Objection 3: The Incas are Isolated, its enemies are all the way in Europe.

While unable to strike directly at Europe (initially) this is a non-issue as it won't take long for the Europeans to come to it.

Hindu and/or Buddist nation of some sort

This could act as a check on the expansion of the Mughals to some degree. I can't really think of any objections to having this, other then the fact that it might be a bit underpowered and that it will have a veritable surplus of enemies trying to pick it apart.

Japan

Japan has the potential to be a sort of "Venice" of the east in terms of power. Some of the barriers to this its dp settings, events, techgroup, and tech. Its not exactly the ideal choice but its certainly workable.

Incas.

China: Tried in Sfs. Didn't work after all (5 COTs before 1600, lots and lots of manpower, only could be attacked due to the heinous events).

Inca: I already saw a game with Incas. Do not work. Wreak Spain and only Spain. Getting an Inca player do not slow down european colonization, it only slow down spanish colonization (and if they got the Aztecs but no Incas, IIRC Spain got the awful situation of getting the bankruptcy events with half the gold).

Just a suggesiton, I have no real problem with playing Algiers, however some players might have a problem with playing a European minor cough*mantu*cough, and I was trying to suggest some plausible alternative. Though, I must note, that with people playing Persia, Mughals, and potentially a Hindu power, it would be MUCH more difficult for China to pull off that kind of excessive powering... espically when it won't take Europeans that long to come knocking for COTS (though this is only the case if we play 1520- China would have more breathing room in a 1492 game). Even if this isn't enough, and decide to leave China as AI, it still leaves the potential for
a Hindu power.... sooo....

Are there any objections to adding a hindu power in the place of a European minor?
