That was not in the deal. If you do not have the money on hand, we will have to renegotiate. The Shah is not happy with the idea of opening a line of credit to some destitute Varangian tribal chief.

The Shah might, on the other hand, be amenable to given the tribal Chief of Denmark Socotra as a gift, secure in the knowledge that the chief would gift the Shah lavisly for such a selfless gift and generous heart, to the value of at least 474d. (To the confused northern barbarian warlord: This is twice 237d)

I'm talking about 1 month's credit here. I'll give you 3 extra ducats in interests for that. So 240 after 1 month.

I have just received news that Portugal will act as my bank, and let me borrow the 237 from them. So it can be transferred from Portugal to Persia directly.

The bank of Lisbon authorized a transfer of 237 ducats from the account of the Kingdom of Portugal to be payed to representatives of the Shah.

Signed by Board of Directors, Bank of Lisbon.

The Shah is wounded by such talk of "interest" and "credit". Such are of no concern between friends and giftgivers and are abhorrent to merchants.

The Shah's offer stands as outlined. Either 237d to be edited in, OR gifts to the value of 474d. The Shah is somewhat amused that the Varangian Tribal Chief seems to be unable to grasp the basic principles of trade: If you cannot afford to pay in cash, you should not be trying to buy in the first place. You get what you pay for. If the Chieftain is destitute, he should not be buying foreign real estate - not even from this most exalted of all dealers.

Ah, the destitute and no doubt unwashed tribal chieftain indebts his nation to the avaricious merchants of Portugal (how well we know them from the Indian scene!) to buy sunny Socotra? Well, that is of course his choice.

...Assuming that he pays the full price of 237d. Perhaps the chieftain ran out of fingers at 236 while explaining the amount to the Portuguese? In a more civilized country, he would have been put to death at an early age.

Nevertheless, in his generosity the Shah offers the barbarian this piece of advice: "He who loans 100d from the bank, is owned by the bank. He who loans 10,000d from the bank, owns the bank" :)

Bah,

His Most Serene and Pacific Majesty, Ferdinand III von Hapsburg, Emperor of Humanity, Emperor of the Romans, King of Germany, Protector of Italy, Slayer of the Turk, King of Bohemia, King of Hungary, Divider of Helvetia, Friend of France, Grand Duke of Slovakia, Archduke of Austria, Prince-Elector, Arch-Cup Bearer of the Empire and some more things, is Much Worried by the recent Danish moves.

The king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden should not buy worthless islands populated by heathens, from heathens. Money should stay in Europe and in the hands of at least christians and preferable catholics.
A somewhat capable monarch should take the island by force instead of letting a reasonable mighty shah bully him.
An even more capable monarch should realise that great dangers lurk around Denmark.
A real capable monarch should realise that there's just one country who can defend Europe for christianity and provides an excellent protection against possible agressive nations.
A wise monarch would, instead of buying islands at the other end of the world, at places we don't even know about, transfer it's money to Christian countries who can in return protect the precious balance of power in Europe and protect the Scandinavian soil from countries with wicked plans.
Perhaps the Danish king should remember that he could have some rights in northern Germany. The emperor may be willing to hear about possible arguments for those rights, for the right sum of ducats. Say, 236 ducats would be a nice start to talk about who should rightfully own Jutland and Holstein.
The Danish king futhermore should realise that great opportunities lay in North America. Not at places covered in darkness, inhabitated by the lords of the wicked.

With great power comes great responsibility.
His Majesty still hasn't lost his trust in the capabilities of the noble king Christian IV. After all, he suddenly expanded his territory at such a pace that it even surprised the emperor himself.

Heh. Nice propaganda, my dear Emperor. ;)

A few points though: you question my motives in buying land from the heathen Persia instead of taking it by force. I see. But ain't that the same heathen Persian you attacked the Ottomans to protect, not long ago?

Also, I fail to see how you can sell me rights to lands (which I already have rights on, btw) which you have no control over. And I doubt the Elector of Brandenburg is happy about that...

Oh, and I see that you stole my former sig for your argumentation. :p

His Most Serene and Pacific Majest <snipped the rest> is annoyed by the light-headed tone of the Danish diplomacy.
First of all, His Majesty does NOT like to be adressed to as 'you'. 'My Liege' or 'Majesty' would be sufficient.

Now, His Majesty thinks it's not worth it, but he will still destroy the futile attempts of 'you' to explain why a Dane should own an island far, far away.

House Habsburg never has attacked the Ottomans to protect some infidels at the other end of the world. The Turk occupied sacred lands of our dynasty. Hungary was covered in darkness and the Ottoman was brutally force converting christians there. Futhermore, the Turk endangered the whole of Christian Europe with their sheer force and might. It's an offensive given that 'you' can suggest that House Habsburg attacked the Turk because of some infidels far, far away.
Saying that Austria declared war on the Ottoman Empire because of heathens living in Persia is insane, offensive, and beyond doubt false.
Even the vile doge of Venice would agree to that.
Even the Shah himself would be offended by this remark of the Danish king. The emperor chooses to believe that the reasonable mighty Shah, who, even as the heathen he is, is somewhat more honourable and perhaps not lost for all eternity to the eternal joy of the heaven, in contrary to the sultan and others.
In short, the Shah may, in contrary to others, possible be a wise man.
The emperor knows that the Shah would rather not think that it was someone else who saved his people from the Turk.

Perhaps the Shah will decide, in the light of this recent message of the Danish king, to keep the island and the nestorians, rather then sell it to someone who denies the capabilities of the Shah to defend his people against intruders.

The emperor also asks the Portuguese king to not lend money to not-so-capable and competent monarchs, for wicked purposes!

Now about the ruthless remark about the rights of Holstein and Jutland. Where the emperor, before this incident, was willing to hear about old claims of Denmark on Holstein and Jutland (for a nice sum), the Danish King can forget about it for now.*
Futhermore, my dear elector in Brandenburg agrees, as every other sane monarch, that the only real authority who decides which Holy Roman territory belongs to whom is the Emperor. It's the Emperor and only the Emperor who decides about the fate and ownership of Holy Roman Territory.

The recent attempts of the Danish king to divide old friends is noticed.

* Mark the 'for now'. Who knows what some ducats can do?

Interesting that 'Friend of France' is as exalted a title as 'Slayer of the Turk'.

The king of Portugal do not own the Bank of Lisbon, and even if its board of directors listens to the king, we can't give them orders. On the other hand, we can warmly recommend the use of the Bank of Lisbon, although we believe that the the House of Habsburg has been a customer for long years of their branch in Vienn.

Signed by the King, Joao IV.

It is interesting how the emperor chose to insult the new Danish king as his first (and second) dicplomatic act. While others have been friendly and honourable, the emperor starts acting as if Denmark were a vassal of Austria. But Denmark answers to noone, especially not the seemingly insane emperor.

What Denmark spends her money on and who we loan it from is no business of the emperor. And Denmark can nothing but laugh at an emperor who doesn't even know the borders of his own empire (Jylland is not part of the HRE).

The proud and honourable king of Denmark is generous though, and therefore wants to give the confused emperor some advice: Do not try to control what is out of reach. ;)

But of course, Austria is free to send it's navy and invade us... :p
