Demands from the Republic of Venice to the Habsburg Emperor

Since Spain has no intention to fight on (and can't for long anyway, as they are getting ass-whiped), We think that it is clear to all that Austria will eventually loose. Therefore, we think the Coalition (Portugal, France, England and Venice) can demand a peace on our terms.

Since the Doge is an honourable man, who fully understand the Austrian desire for a harbor, we offer the following:

-Istria and Lombardy is to be handed over to Venice
-Dalmatia is to stay in Austrian hands

This may seems unreasonable, since:
-Austria has no claims to Dalmatia, and will have trouble for some years controlling it
-Austria has valid claims to Istria
-Venice has no claims to Lombardy, which is a rich province

But the senate would like to point out, that Dalmatia is of little value to us without land connection, and we refuse to let Austria keep both provinces. And Lombardy is a fair gain, since the war was on Venetian soil and the entire Republic was looted and turned into a regular bloodbath. Therefore, Lombardy is a fair compensation for the destruction caused.

And on other notes, the Austrian Emperor is a liar. He did not wish for Austria to be an equal ally to Venice as France; he wanted Venice to abandon France, and join the Austrian alliance instead. This would probably have resulted in a grand attack on France, as Spain clearly wanted to take advantage of the internal troubles in France. This was a clear planned Spanish-Austrian aggression, and nothing the Austrians say will change the facts.

Even if we don't understand in which legitimacy the Doge makes propositions, as for Venice this war is lost and over, we have to point out that the Doge has a tendancy to propose unreasonable and unrealizable things...

We wish to remind you that, if the Doge had accepted to cede us peacefully the province of Istria, he would have avoided the loss of Dalmatia (I am sure that the Doge agrees to the fact that a province with minus 10% income due to not connexion to the capital is better than a lost province) and the loss to Hellas to the infidels of the Ottoman Empire which is a great disaster for the christian world.

Also, the Doge refuses to take the responsibility of his decisions daring to demand to Austria compensations for the destruction and the losses that he caused.

Instead, he continue to put in danger his allies demanding unreasonable things as for him the party is over and he runs no more risks.

We've already shown that destruction of Venice is not our purpose, this is why we still propose to the Doge to return him the province of Dalmatia which legally should belong to him. We think that this solution will stop the losses of more colonies of his allies who, for a reason that we sincerely don't understand still support him in his unreasonable demands.

However, if the Doge wish to maintain his insane propositions, the forces of Austria will strike the armies that remain involved in this war as they did in Venice causing the annihilation of Venezian army, even if we consider that brave enemy soldiers should not sacrify their lives because of dubious decisions of their allies.

Therefore, we repeat our peace proposition which we consider to be the most reasonable, concerning the return of Dalmatia to Venice and the territorial integrity of Spain, including of course the return of the colonies to their former holders.

Dutch Statement of 17th June

Message from the Democratic Republic of Netherlands

Honourable leaders of Spain, France, England, Ottoman Empire, Sweden, Russia, Venice, Portugal, Austria, Persia and China – The Norwegian President of the Dutch Democracy will make his first statement related to his policies related to you.

Military:
1. Netherlands is a democratic country, and military power is only used as a last solution.
2. Netherlands wants to continue being a member of the military alliance along with Austria, Papal States, Spain, Sweden and The Knights. If any member of this alliance wants to end the cooperation, we will like to know as soon as possible.
3. Netherlands will – as a result of a compromise made earlier this evening – withdrew from the war against France and allies on a white peace deal.
4. Netherlands will within few months declare war against Münster in order to conquer the province of Geldre, which is one of our national provinces. We hope all the powers listed above will accept this, and will not tolerate any intervention on behalf of Münster.

Diplomacy.
1. Netherlands wants to enter a royal marriage with Sweden
2. Netherlands wants to find solutions together with Sweden related to international affairs. We want our two countries to produce a letter consisting of agreements related to the world order, which can give both our countries benefits in – among other things – colonization, which some other countries reject us.
3. We will be happy to open our Centres of Trade for Venetian traders again, and is looking forward to cooperation also on other areas.

Others.
1. Netherlands is interested in buying the following provinces from Portugal: Recife, Pernambuc, Piamentina, Salvador, Itaimas and Niteroy. If the Portuguese are interested in such a deal we will be happy to discuss terms/price.
2. The glorious people of Netherlands will maintain the military access deal with Spain for as long as they wishes on the following terms. Farano (a small trade post with 0 in both tax and trade income) to Netherlands.
3. Netherlands will be happy to discuss the future of the provinces of Flandern and Brabant with their current – or possibly future – owners.
4. As a result of the compromise I mentioned earlier Netherlands release Magdeburg in order to make justice to the oppressed people of Germany. The province will be handed over to Mecklenburg unless the Honourable King of Sweden has something to protest.

The government of the Democratic Republic of Netherlands will make a new statement within a few days, which we hope will contain further agreements with you. The Dutch people are very interested in suggestions from you – every contribution is a good contribution according to us!

1. Netherlands is interested in buying the following provinces from Portugal: Recife, Pernambuc, Piamentina, Salvador, Itaimas and Niteroy. If the Portuguese are interested in such a deal we will be happy to discuss terms/price.

Since that provinces comprised all of portuguese Brazil (an undertaking in what Portugal has spent several ducats and expected great benefits) the king of Portugal with regret declares that we are unable to accept that deal. Specially since they are still free provinces to colonize in Brazil (south of Niteroi and east from Recife), and we left them free precisely in order that other countries could colonize that fertile and rich lands.

But, since it is an ancient policy of the kingdom do not deny colonial expansion to any nation we offer the following:
1. The sale of Niteroi
2. To cede Tot Rights from Curitiba to Uruguay (so no other nation could colonize that lands). Since the lands east of Recife are open too, we think that the Netherlands will find space enough to colonize in Brazil.

If the Netherlands is interested we can offer military access to our chain of ports to make easier the exploration of the far east (as long as the Netherlands is prepared to trade maps)

Signed by Filipe I, king of Portugal (letter delivered by the new portuguese ambassador in the Netherlands).

The Dutch like the Portugeese attitude, and accept it`s refusal of our proposal. We are - however - interested in etablishing our colonies in large groups with no area controlled by others in the middle. We will once again ask Portugal to consider the deal - and is of course willing to let them take over some of our existing colonies as a part of it. This time we will offer Portugal a price which - of course - is open for negotations:

WE OFFER:
-Bangor, Stadcone, Connecticut, The Bahamas, Cuyuni, Wisconsin, Inyo and San Bernandino to Portugal
-300 ducats to Portugal
-Military access for Portugeese forces through the Netherlands
-Maintenance of the military access for Spanish troops

WE DEMAND:
-Exclusive colonization rights from the Amazon River (province of Para) to Parana River (provinces of Neembucu, Parana and Parana)
-Recife, Pernambuc, Piamentina, Salvador, Itaimas and Niteroy to Netherlands
-Farano to Netherlands

Alas, the offer is not convenient for Portugal. We understand the wish of Netherlands to have colonies near one to another since this is the same policy that Portugal has followed

We appreciate the offer of Neterlands but for the following reasons we can not accept it:
1. NA is by the Treaty of Firenze, signed by Portugal, claimed by England and France. The Netherlands do not signed that treaty and they are free to do as they like, but Portugal likes to abide by his word.
2. Caribbean colonies are in the spanish sphere of the Tot. Specially given our unfortunate recent war with Spain, we will try to improve our relations with Spain and, hence, we will not enter the spanish sphere of influence.
3. We will be exchanging developed colonies (Itaimas and Pernambuco only lack a major and a manufacture) for undeveloped ones. 300 ducats could be a low price for Itaimas alone even if traded for a province that we will need to spend several ducats in order to develop it.
4. We can not, sadly, offer exclusive colonization rights in North Brazil (east from Recife). Sweden has a previous claim on this provinces. Although we not ceded our Tot rights in these lands to them, the swedish claim was received favourably in Portugal. So, we can not cede the rights to another country. Maybe you should talk with Sweden regarding this.

In fact, the portuguese king believes that our previous proposal is all we can offer without breaking treaties or taking bad decisions for Portugal. We offered our Tot rights south of Itaimas (our southernmost developed city), we made clear that we support dutch development in Northern Brazil and we offered our chain of ports in order to make easier the expansions of the Netherlands in the far east. Portugal is prepared to support and to help any medium-power, since we believe in balance of power and a strong Netherlands is an important part of this balance (and in fact in colonial matters, as any country can testify, we have been very helpful with another powers)

Signed by the portuguese ambassador in Netherlands.

France would like to buy the lands in North America mainland actually ocupped by Netherlands and that are in our colony of Great Canada, as we also want to colonize great areas.

We are open to discuss prices.

OK - I can not sell any colonies unless Netherlands is able to colonize a large area another place in the world. One solution may be: France is paying me x ducats for the colonies in North America, Spain for the ones in Carribia and Northern parts of South America. This money plus a sum of up to 800 ducats can be paided to Portugal (and Sweden) for the existing colonies/TPs and the right of colonizing the rest of the area between the Amazon River and Prana River. I am new in the game and it is difficult for me to suggest prices. I will therefore ask the Spanish and the French player make a bid for my provinces, while Portugal and Spain have to decide what they demand for the hand over of the provinces and colonization rights between the Amazon River and Parana River. This may include money, provinces, military access, alliances, exchange of discoveries - what you want, in fact.

Letter to the Democratic Replublic of the Netherlands

Sweden welcomes the new Dutch Republic and would be honored if we could arrange a marriage. This would be considered a first step toward a hopefully strong and lasting relationship between our two great nations. The military alliance is hoped to be continued as well as we feel that protestant and reformed brethren should unite.

As for the colonizing matters we would like to state that we officially claimed the north of Brazil from Marajo to Tiracambu/Maranhao for the Swedish crown. These claims were supported by Portugal (who has the ToT rights to those lands) and Spain agreed to not interfere in this proces. We will stand by these claims. We do however understand the need for the Dutch Republic to colonize and suggest the following:

- Sweden will limit its claims on North Brazil to Marajo and Para (and their hinterlands of Carcacas, Goias and MaltoGrosso) leaving Tiracambu and Maranhao to be claimed for the Dutch
- Sweden will not claim any other land to colonize in the future, thus not interfering with any other Dutch expansion
- Sweden will offer help in any way it can to help the Dutch Republic with a colonial empire. Military acces for example.

We think that the other still uncolonized lands in both South America and the far east will provide the Netherlands with sufficient room to colonize. We are sure other european nations all see the necessity for the Dutch Republic to seize a grand colonial empire.

As for the issue of Magdenburg we think it would be wise to hand it over to another german minor, since our intent was to annex Mecklenburg first thing next session, giving it back to Mecklenburg will only result in Sweden having to conquer it again hereby letting the Magdenburg people suffer additionally.

Signed by Erik XIV, King of Sweden, Ruler of Scandinavia.

The Dutch President is very delighted by Sweden`s withdrawal of its claims on the provinces east of Para. We will - however - hope that you also will reconsider your claim on tyhe province of Para, since a dutch takeover of this province will make the Amazon River a natural obstracal between our two colonial territories. As we both know rivers gives a penalty on the attacker during hostile actions. It`s also an natural border between countries. Both Sweden and Netherlands will have benefits from this, since both our empires will be defended better.

Netherlands will be happy to give you military access, and a economical compensation will be given if you hand the colonization right of Para to us. The size of this can you decide by you (within reason).

We are looking forward hearing from you soon!

Final proposal of the Kingdom of Portugal to the Dutch Republic

1. We cede our Tot Rights (recognized by every major power in Europe in the treaty of Firenze) in the provinces of Parnaiba, Tiracambu, Maranhao, Iguatu, Araxa, Curitiba, Cangucu and Uruguay to the Republic of the United Provinces. No other power is allowed to colonize this lands (we do not have Tot rights on Artigas o Parana).
2. We will sell the province of Niteroi to the Dutch Republic for 50 ducats.
3. We will abide by the decision of the Swedish crown concerning the situation of Para.

The dutch republic should take on account that with this offer we are giving to the republic more provinces in Brazil that we will have after this deal. We think that this offer is a generous one and that is useful and benefical to both realms.

We don´t find that the Portuguese will accept selling their colony of Brazil. Even all the money that Netherlands can give wont pay for the riches of that fantanstic land ;) :D
We, on the other hand, are open to pay for the NA procincies, as they stand in the middle of French Canada. We can pay a just price for it.
Considering that we bough from Portugal the colony of Table for 100 ducats, and Table was a developed and rich colony, we propose to pay 300 ducats for all continental canadian provincies in the hands of the Dutch.

We think the best rote for the dutch is to carve his own empire. With the money and famous captains the republic has, it can for sure discover new lands yet to been find.

Ours allies and friends, the Portuguese said that there are big tracts of rich lands in the Far Asia. We are open to given Military acesse as part of the deal for buying the NA provincies.

Sincerality,
In the name of the Ausgust King of France, His Majesty Henry III

EDIt: as you are new in MP, I suggest taking a look at some of the AARs in the MP Forum. They can sugest good avenues for expansion for the Netherlands. Trade is King to the Dutch Republic, i would say. Get a base in Far Asia and discover the CoTs in there and voila... very rich nation :)

The Kings Proposal

To strenghten our relations with the Dutch Republic and to show our understanding for Dutch needs the Swedish King has made the following proposition:

- The handover of the claims on Para for the lump sum of 150 ducats to the Dutch Republic
- The eternal recognition for the Swedish claims on Marajo and the hinterland consisting of Carcacas, Goias and MaltoGrosso by the Dutch Republic
- Magdenburg to a different german minor then Mecklenburg, perhaps Hannover or Saxony

If the Dutch President agrees on this proposal we are sure that our two honorable nations can coexist to mutual benefits.

Well - I do, of couse, accept the offer from Portugal, but is open for further engociations with regard to the other provinces if the Portugeese want. Netherlands has money, and is ready to use it to buy more provinces in Brazil.

When it comes to the French and the Swedish proposal I am not that sure: France offers me 300 ducats for three provinces (two colonies level 2 - both possible level three since the former player recently has sent colonists there, and one trade post), while I will have to pay Sweden 150 for a province with neither a TP or a colony. The base tax value of the NA provinces is 13, while the Base tax value of Para is 2.

I have three proposal that I hope France and Sweden can be agreed on which they choose:

-900 for the NA provinces
-150 for Para

-600 for the NA provinces
-100 for Para

-300 for the NA provinces
-50 for Para

I demand with this 6 times as much for the NA provinces than I offer for Para, which is a generous offer. In fact, I could have demanded 10 times as much.

We remind the Dutch President that we have ceded the rights to 2 other provinces for free. With the addition of Para, wich makes it 3 provinces in total we think 150 is a fair price. It does not matter to us what other nations ask for theirs. We set our own price as we see fit.

Our Kings proposal will therefore remain as formerly stated.

I will consider the proposal from the Crown of Sweden, and expects a new offer from France - the colonies in North America are not handed over for 300 ducats.

In the meantime: is the Spanish player present? I would like to hear what he or she demands for the colonization rights of Artigos and Neembucu, and is also interested in buying the TP in Parana.

The Dutch people has also decided to give Portugal military access if they want. We will also be interested in trade agreements with both Portugal and Spain.

I will remind the Swedish King that the provinces he is talking about are not presently a part of the Swedish realm. Since the Netherlands hasn`t signed the treaty of Firenze we are free to colonize the area whenever we want. This is - however - not really an option for us since we will maintain our good relations to the Swedes. We will, anyhow, mention it to remind the Swedes that the payment they receive are voluntary. Thay shall - in other words - not try to blackmail us!

Yours sincerely,

What Bjørnson is trying to say is that the Dutch President wants Sweden to consider 100 ducats as a fair payment. Portugal ceded the rights of 8 provinces for free, and demanded not more than 50 for a TP. This is therefore a very good offer.

President of the Democratic Republic of Netherlands.
