Portugal 1573-1574: Routine maintenance

For future historians, the year 1574 could be useful to study a 'normal' situation for Portugal in the second half of the XVII century: Apart of building forts in colonies and promoting chief judges, nothing happened in the kingdom. Using the statement of 'no news, good news', future historians could think that this peaceful year the portuguese people was happy and prosperous.

French Ambassador at the Spanish Court

We bring to you the words of our loved King

He express his goodwill with Spain and the long rule of Filipe II, but remembers the Spanish King about point 9 in the Treaty of Lisbon - by wich were recognized that only Austria had claims in Netherlands.

So, France hopes that Spain abide by the Treaty and end the vassalization of the good people of Holland and evacuete his forces from Brabant and Flanders.

We also use the oportunity to remember that Spain still mantains five merchants in Ille d´France, against the trade policy decreted by our King. We want to see this number diminished to three.

That´s are the words of our king.

OOC: lets remember the time of threating diplomacy :)

Statement from Venice regarding trading policy

It has been decided by the wise Doge, that if any nation has more than 3 merchants in 1 of our centers of trade; that nation will emmediatly be trade embargoed! This rather harsh policy has been issued in order to ensure that our mercantile interests will not be disturbed on our own ground, as it has happened to the French.

Letter from Portuguese Ambassador to Venetian Senate

Since Portugal have 2 traders in Genoa, and since 3 is allowed by Venice (and is the aim of portugese policy) it is possible that the following situation arises: That trying to have 3 traders in Genoa we end with 4 traders (since is policy to send 2 traders at the same time). In this case, we will not send any more merchants and we will prefer that our 'extra' merchant is expelled by normal means insted by embargo.

It is not our policy to disturb venetian trade interests in COTs owned by Venice. The situation in the COT of Veneto -when we had not sent any more merchants since we have 3 merchants in this city- is proof of the truth of the previous statement.

Signed by Portuguese Ambassador in Venice.

The Republic of Venice, 1573-1581

The Republic decided that trade should be expanded, and therefore started to seek foreign lands to construct trading posts in. Merhcants was sent to Veneto and Liguria, and due to some severe herreasment from some German countries, several trade embargos was issued. Money was also put into expanding the infrastructure, which could be afforted in these times of peace. But dark clouds were approuching, and Europe was about to be dragged into war...

Our ally Austria started to demand the province of Istria. In return they offered 'protection', which clearly meant that if Istria was ceceded to Austria, the Emperor would not violate our borders - but if we did not comply, he 'could not guarantee our safety'. Off course, this despiseable offer was refused, resulting in Austria leaving the alliance to join Spain - who obviously had lured Austria away with false promises of fortune and glory.

When time came, the betraying Austrian scum and their equally aggressive allies attacked the peaceful Republic without any warning. As a peaceful nation, Venice had only 10k troops in Europe - none of them present in Italy. Nothing could stop the Imperial troops from slaughtering the innocent, raping the women and destroying our cities. All available troops (about 26k) was summoned in Modena, and a counterattack begun. Although we had initial success due to the bravery and excellent skill of our armies and especially the very capable general Bragadin, our severely outnumbered forces did not stand a change against the Austrian hordes. City after city fell to the brutal invaders, and our troops decided to capture Rome from their ally, the Pope. Rome was poorly defeated, and quickly fell. Most of mainland Venice was on fire, and stabillity low - but the war was not over. Just as a new counterattack was prepared with the help from French forces, a renegade diplomat signed a seperate peace for Venice with the Axis of Evil, resulting in the loss of Istria and Dalmatia to Austria. The renegade diplomat has been dealt with in a proper manor: since he did not use his head for any good, we have cut it off! Let this be a warning to all who thinks of betraying the Republic!

And to make matters worse, the heathen pigs of the Ottoman Empire used the opportunity to pray on us at our weakest. The Republic saw little other choice than to sign a peace giving the ancient Greek city of Athens and its surroundings to the Sultan.

But in times of trouble, our good and trustworthy allies supported us. The senate would like to thank the proud and honourable nations of France, Portugal and England. May God bless their monarchs! Despite of the fact that Venice is out of the war, our allies are still fighting against the Axis - and victory is near! Venice will support them morally and - when we are back on track again - financially. The end of this war caused by pure evil has not yet seen the end...

Portugal 1573-1581. The first general european war

The decade of 1570's was a time of internal development for Portugal: legal councils and forts in every city. Our trade increased in the orient -with 5 merchants in Guangzhou- and finally we achieve our aim of 3 merchants in every important Cot. In 1578 the reform to promote majors to governors was approved (infra 5)

But the time of peace ended in the final years of the decade. Austia leave our alliance and joined the spanish alliance with the only aim, it seems, to attack Venice. Austria decided to DoW Venice. And that decision opened the way to a general european war. The Habsburg Alliance against Venice, France, England and Portugal.

Portugal -a nation that loves peace- was not prepared to a war. In Europe we only had 5k troops and 39 warships. Our only other troops were in india (11k under del Crato and 9 ships). But, we believe in abide by our word and we fulfill our treaty oligations. So we joined the valiant war effort of Venice. But, since we love peace, we have money. Less money than Spain, but at the same time we had less commitments, and we could concentrate all our war effort in Spain (besides a little offensive in SA that ended with small spanish and portuguese guards in the frontier of Niteroi)

The chief war ground was Spain. We hired mercenaries and launched an inmediate offensive thinking that Portugal can not fought a defensive war against Spain. The war at first was very bitter and a spanish counteroffensive in Portugal worried the king. But they were defeated and the war definitely moved to Spain. The arrival of del Crato with his 11k (after he conquered Canaries) was a welcomed development.

As the war unfolded, the portuguese troops started to defeat spanish troops: We usually fought defensive battles in mountains, and in the few battles in plains our superiority in cavalry was useful. With our leader (a 3-3-2, small advantage but advantage as well), our small edge in land tech and luck we were able to defeat several times spanish armies, even with great numerical disadvantage. The spanish provinces, finally, started to fall to portuguese armies: Valencia, Catalonia, Asturias. The portuguese king warmly encourages the portuguese troops to continue in his path to victory.

We only are sad because the war has been fought in spanish territory, when the real aggresor is Austria. The war objectives of Portugal includes the devolution of provinces to Venice. We enter the war to defend Venice against her foes, and we have not forgotten that.

We only want to receive reparations from Spain for the vassalisation event and for our -3 stab. Felipe II should not had made that decision against Filipe I. At least, we are not vassals of Spain now

Letter from the Venetian senate to the King of Portugal

It has not gone unnoticed, that Portuguese King feels sorry on behalf of Spanish sufferings. The senate would like to stress out that such concern is totally undeserved, as the Spanish King is just as quilty as the Austrian Emperor. Spain wanted war - one way or the other - and lured Austria and Ottoman Empire into helping him. Surely, Austria would not have dared to challenge our alliance had Spain not promised Austria help - and intelligence reports suggest that Spain also contacted the Ottoman Sultan. In fact, Spain actually approached Venice in order to form an anti-French alliance. But naturally (unlike Austria), Venice refused to backstab an ally - and paid the bitter price for it...

So the warmongering Spain and Austria are equally quilty, and should be treated as such.

Ottoman Empire 1573-1581

The Empire is getting bigger and bigger. After taking Astrakhan from Ak Kon we joined the great fun in the european theatre.
Although not quiete ready for a big war due to the fact that our troops melted away in the russian snow.
But not a single shot was fired. The sultan accepted immediate peace with Venice in exchange for Hellas sat down in his golden armchair choose his maid for the night and watched Europe burn.

First it looked like a cakewalk for the Habsburgs but Portugal emerged to be a pain in the butt for Spain it seems for suddenly most spanish provinces lay under siege. France has not only to deal with the spanish and austrians but also with high rr due to eventeffect (nice timed attack there). By now the war seemed decided Venetia peaced out and left his allies alone in the fight.

Meanwhile whilst Europe was distracted we attacked Persia and gained the Provinces of Awazh, Hamadan and Iraq, standing in front of Isfahan our next goal. A tasty one. Very beefy looking indeed.

The Habsburg-Italian War 1578-1581

1578

The war started in March, 5,1578, when Austria declared war on The Venetian Republic. In March, 10, all great europeans powers were at war.

The Hapsburgs, with their vassals, Papal States, the Knights of Malta and the Netherlands, against the coalition of Venice, England, France, Portugal and Britanny.

In April, 12, the Ottoman Empire declared war on Venice, wich proved to all christian world that the Habsburgs were making negotiations with the infidels for the partition of the christian Venetian Republic.

The war started badly for the coalition. In America the Spaniards atacked the islands of the caribeen, killing and raping indiscriminadaly.

EU Americas 1578.jpg

The Americas in 1578

In France, 35k spaniards under Alba advanced from the Lowlands sieging Artois.

EU Francia 1578.jpg

The french front at the start of the war

We had the same numbers of tropers near there, in Champagne, and more 17k being trained in Paris. We were also moving 27k of our southern army to join with the Nord Armee and defeat Alba before the southern offensive of the spaniards could take ours provincies in there. We wanted to win fast in one front, ending the menace against Paris.

But Alba moved his army to siege Paris, intending in slauthering our recruits in there as soon as they were ready to fight. To avoid that the Nord Armee moved to Paris, arriving a few hours after the battle between the 17k french recruits and the 35k veterans under Alba had started.

The battle prolongued for five days, but in the sixth day the Southern army arrived at the fields in front of the walls of Paris, crossing the Seine, and assaulting Albas position. With this the spaniards panicked and run away chased by our armies. Alba retreated the survivors to Zeeland, while we sieged Flandern.

In Napolis, 20k spaniards atacked our 18k forces in the mountains of Apulia, being defeated. Ours armies followed the retreating spaniards and sieged Messina and Sicily. But a few spaniards escaped the island and started sieging Apulia.

In december, we had lost a battle in Provence against the soldiers of Alessandro Farnasse, and were in the bad end in the southern front.

While this happened, the Austrians and Papists had stormed the italian lands, sieging many cities.

1579

To support the english offensive in Mexico we moved our forces in Lousiania, atacking the spaniards in Bayou. Our soldiers were defeated and then the spaniards chased them back to Lousiania, capturing ours colonies in there.

The english come to the rescue, after having taked the capital of the Vice-Reinado of Mexico, Tnochitan, and won against the spanish.

In Italy Sicily and Messina were conquisted by ours forces but a atack in Apulia failed and we retreated to Napolis, where our armie was crushed by a Austrina army.

In France we continued to siege the lowlands, but a failed assault on Flanders and a atack of Alba forced ours forces to retreat, but Alba could not explore this vitory because french reinforcements arrived and forced the old duke to retire to Zeeland again. A relief offensive to support the venetians were defeated after we lost a battle to the papists and knights in Piedmont.

1580

Guise joined ours forces sieging Flanders. The 19k army of Alba was not receiving reiforcements thanks to the blocade made by tha portuguese in the straits of Gibraltar. This time Flanders and Brabant were taked by our armie of 30k soldiers under the Duke of Guise.

Huguenotes revolts started to appear in southern France. A catholic noble was assissinated by a calvinist in Provence, bringing instability to the country.

In America we captured Tortuga and Les Cayes, but our fleet was defeated by the stronger spanish navy.

Portugal refused the goverment of Filipe II. In the Iberian peninsule the portugueses were figthing against the superior number of spaniards and winning. In Italy the Austrians had defeated the venetians and ruled the countryside.

1581

With the help of a traitor diplomat, Venice signed a peace with the Habsburgs in June, 5, 1581. Thats were when a french army after winning a batle in the outskirst of Genova was ready to atack the Austrian.

With the Austrian armies free in Italy, the French armie retreated to Piedmont, to mount a defense in the mountains.

Catalunia was captured by the portuguese army. At this moment Valencia and Asturias are under Portuguese control and portuguese armies are sieging Cantabria and Estremadura. Another French army is sieging Gerona.

Guise, with his 30k armies, after having taked the spanish lowlands, moved to the frontier of Spain, destroing rebels armies in his way, intending in bringing the spaniards donw, before the austrians could concentrate in the war against France.

The situation on Spain is as follows: 25k spaniards against 46k french and 45k portuguese. Alba is again in the offensive in the north, but a french army of the same size is watching him. While Piedmont is secure under 21k French soldiers.

The Spanish king has returned from his vacation and takes back the control of his country.

We are a little disappointed with the European royals.
First of all we condemn Austria for exploiting our absence to attack a Catholic nation that we have been friends with for many decades.
But not less are we disappointed with the other leaders who are demanding territory from us in a war that we have fought for our allies.
Spain has so far always tried to remain peace among the European powers.
We have signed the Italian treaty even after France had broken the terms leaving us with little to nothing gained for our efforts in the liberation of the Italians.
We have ceaded Roussilion to France just to remain good relations with our neighbours.
We have had Venice have their share of the European continent and even promised them territory in our territory. We traded our hardly archieved maps several times with them to support the Senate.
We have given our maps to England and allowed them to colonize in the Carrebean and Florida
Spain even let the French have access to Louisiana.
Portugal, which we considered a close friend and ally has been given access to our CoT in Zacatecas and we have always obeyd their Trade rules in their own CoTs.

Now when the first chance comes up everyone is turning their backs on us.
We can understand that you are fighting for Vencie and want those claimed lands back but now you are even asking us to ceade you territory so we have to wonder if your war efforts weren't for the Venetian sake but rather your own greedy motives.

Spain will sign this treaty if Austria agrees to the terms as well but we will remember that there are no friends and no allies to us in Europe and that all our appeasement policies weren't worth anything when our "friends" turn their back on us whenever they get the slightest chance to gain something from it.
After we have signed this treaty you can be sure that Spain shall not sign a treaty again just to appease anyone.

Have a good day

Response from the Emperor

This war is the result of the repetitive negative responses of Venice's Doge concerning our valid claims in the province of Istria.
The respectful Doge considered that he could trade these claims with the province of Lombardia (should we remind that this province was royally inherited to our Empire and that the Doge has absolutely no valid claim in this province?)

For two centurys now, we watch pathetically the Republic of Venice trying to impose their rule by force in whole Italy which is part of the Holy Roman Empire. In the name of our friendship and alliance we didn't express our reserves. We only asked for our valid claims to be satisfied. But the Doge seem to consider that mutual friendship and cooperation are only to serve his interests.

During these two centurys is clear to us that Venice's privileged ally is France. We offered to Venice the assurance of a frienship that guarantees the independance of his lands under Venice rule. But the Doge seemed satisfied that France is backing him.

We, therefore, decided to break our alliance with Venice as we didn't feel that we were an equal member of this alliance and that our role as to not provoke headeachs to the Doge in his northern borders. These times are past now. We find more wise to ally to the member of our dynasty - Spain, which felt threatened by France's military power. It is more natural to be allied to our brother rather to our friend.

To conclude, and for all these reasons, we find the proposition of the respectful monarch of Portugal unacceptable.

The Emperor declares that he will sign peace with Portugal's coalition under the following simple conditions.
  • Major powers will acknowledge Emperor's valid claims in Istria, and Dalmatia will be returned to Venice
  • Territorial integrity of Spain will be maintained, including colonies previously owned by Spain

Signed by the Holy Roman Emperor

Portugal, which we considered a close friend and ally has been given access to our CoT in Zacatecas and we have always obeyd their Trade rules in their own CoTs.

Portugal has already said to the spanish king that the only reason we are asking for recognition of Canarias and trading rights is simply because the spanish decision to vassalize us (a decision that cost us loss of stability -3 stab and, more important, subsequently loss of merchants). We did not enter the war to gain anything for us, and we only want something for us after that decision (and the spanish decision of making a separated deal with Venice instead with the alliance with the sole aim to stab-hitting). We know that that decission were made by a spanish regent and not by the spanish king -a man we know is peaceful and wise-, but they were decisions of the spanish crown.

Our chief demand is, indeed, the devolution of venetian provinces. And the portuguese demands are primordially symbolic: Spain had already agreed to give trading rights in Zacatecas (one of our 2 demands) and the recognition of Canarias (since the province is owned by Portugal, btw accidentally I did not realized that Canaries was under the portuguese Tot) is also kind of symbolic.

Besides, the appeasament policy of Spain has already given lots of advantages to the spanish crown: Almost 80 years of colonial expansion in America without european worries or interference. That it is not a thing to dismiss.

We remind the Emperor that the leader of our alliance is Venice, not Portugal and the only reason that Venice is not in this treaty is that Habsburg Alliance made separate peace with them (and, BTW our current leader is France not Portugal).

Regarding the Austrian proposal, we declare that:
1. We will accept any proposal in the adriatic that Venice accepts. But, in principle, the devolution of Dalmatia seems reasonable to us (although we would like an indemnization paid to Venice for her losses in this case).

2. Regarding the second proposal, we are prepared to reduce the portuguese demand to trading rights in Zacatecas (and that is chiefly a symbolic demand). The situation in Canaries should wait (since it is not controlled but owned by Portugal in the present day). We will left to the Habsburgs how to compensate Portugal for our losses in stability due to the vassalisation move.
Regarding the demands of our allies, we stand for anything that they ask for themselves -we think that they are not very harsh.

3. We understand that the austrian proposal includes the devolution of colonies conquered by Spain to their previous owners.

Signed by Filipe I, king of Portugal

European War 1578-1581 - Habsburgs' Glory

Feeling that the good will of the Emperor was being exploited by the Doge of Venice concerning the matter of Istria, and following the alarm of Spain concerning France's threat in the north, the glorious dynasty decided to take the situation in their hands.

A Declaration of War has been sent to the Republic of Venice the 5th March of 1578 accompanied by the claims of the Habsburgs: Istria to Austria and Napoli and Rousillon to Spain. Even if our foreign minister has used all the diplomatic ways to persuade the Doge of the validity of our claims, we hoped that Venice would face the reality in the eyes. But he did not.

Instantly, 45k of soldiers surrounded the city of Veneto with 78 units of artillery approaching to start the seige. In parallel, 30K of troops have been divided to the seizes of Istria and Dalmatia.

Veneto fell some months later, giving a hard strike to the republic's defenses. Some 25k venitian troops commanded by a seemingless leader managed to resist at first between the borders of Mantua and Romagna but victory was inevitable. Rapidly, seizes all around the north of Italy settled. Surprisingly our armies meet our allies of Papal States, their commander told us that they were heading to the city of Piemonte, which proved that Pope's occasional insanities are not a legend.

Having dominated the north of the italian Peninsula, we were informed that venitian backforces had trouble with some peasants of Firenze who found the occasion to rebel. Our armies took benefit of this to rest and redeploy. A unit was sent south to the province of Napoli to aim spanish troops against French remains of some army. Meanwhile, the seizes of Istria and Dalmatia turned to be successful and after the cleaning of the french remains in the south we concentrated to the french attempt to brake Piemote's seize from the armies of the Pope. Unfortunately, our armies arrived too late as the seize was already broken but our army 60k army crashed the french forces in Piemonte who were forced to retreat in Savoy.

At that time, a messager has arrived and informed us that Venice has accepted to hand us Istria and Dalmatia in order to have peace. It seem that a high diplomat of the Republic had understood that Venice's situation was desperate and signed this peace that proves the generosity of our alliance as allmost all the venezian lands were in Austrian occupation.

After our victory in Italy, French and Portuguese armies remain as the only obstacles to a glorious victory of the Habsburg Dynasty...

(to be continued...?)

A Declaration of War has been sent to the Republic of Venice the 5th March of 1578 accompanied by the claims of the Habsburgs: Istria to Austria and Napoli and Rousillon to Spain.

It seems that the spanish regent informed misleadingly to the king of Spain about why that crown entered the war. Not simply -as Portugal or England- answering a call from help from an ally, an honourable thing to do- but trying to conquer provinces to herself. Although it was not a decision of the king, it is -as we had said earlier- a decision of the spanish crown, and it weakens the spanish claims about being unfairly treated (since it was in fact Spain who broke the appeasament policy)

In view of this information, Portugal declare the following:
1. Regarding Italy, we repeat our answer to the austrian counter-proposal: We agree with anything that Venice agrees. We believe that the devolution of Dalmatia is reasonable and we ask for indemnities being paid to Venice.
2. Regarding the portuguese demands to Spain, we go back to our initial claim: Trading rights and recognition of our current ownership of Canaries.
3. Regarding french and english petitions, we will agree to whatever demands our allies think fit to claim.

Beware the Austrians lies

So the Austrians recognize that Spain dindt went to war only in support of the autrians Habsburgs. Spain demanded us the Kingdom of Napolis and Roussilion. It even had the petulance to demand Apulia, when ours armies had already captured Sicily and Messina.

We also hoped better of Filipe II. We do not think he can take ours colonies and burn ours cities in the south of France and then pretend he only fights for his allie.

We want the provincies of Les Cayes and Antigua as compensation for the burning of ours colonies and ours cities, for the rape of ours womens and the killings of our people.

We do advise that these are very good terms, when half your country is in the hands or sieged by the coallition forces. If we wanted to take territories from Spain we would have started the war...

As it happens, it were the Habsburgs who declared war. We´re giving them the chance to do right, to end this war. We do not even demand territory in Europe, as the Habsburgs demanded from France and Venice, forgeting the treatys that they now claim we are not respecting.

And the French had not be defeated by the Austrians. What a lie! When the traitor diplomat of Venice sold his republic to the Habsburgs the french force opted to retire from Genova, from where we had expulsed the papists, to assume better positions in Piedmont. Actually, Austrians forces are very far from Savoy and even from Piedmont.

We started the war with a army smaller than Austria or Spain, hurry conscripted because of the menace of war. We now have a army bigger than either two. The Duke of Alba has had to run for Zeeland two times with fear of ours armies, but at least the spanish had already clashed with us ans showed their valour.

But the austrian army has yet to prove his valour to the french. We dind't saw an astrian yet...

Henry III,
King of France and Napolis
